Election time
So, it's election time in Ontario on Thursday (but more importantly the start of Hockey) and I'm embarrassingly uninformed so I'm spending today doing a bit of research. Any two cents from my fellow Ontarians?

Pick one team to win straight up each week. You can't pick the same team more than once. Lose and you're out. PM me your pick by 12:30pm Sunday Toronto time, I'll cut off the picks at that time, and post a list. Good luck.

A suggestion for Kestas:
I think that we should have a record of how many people (But not their identity of course) have muted that person on their profile. It would have a similar reasoning to that of the +1 button, in order for users to see what sort of behaviour is and isn't accepted by the community to promote self-moderation.

and mortality
About two and a half hours ago I walked past a guy in the fetal position passed out/dead in the middle of the sidewalk. This was smack dab in the middle of an area where a hockey game just let out but people (dozens if not hundreds) filed by on either side without stopping with the exception of myself and two others. Personally I had no idea what to do and didn't even think about calling 911 but the other guy did and I flagged down a cop car. I walked away before it was revealed whether the guy was truly dead or nor. The man was black and mot probably homeless or disoriented. And again I shit you not dozens walked by without stopping before we did. WTF is wrong with people.
should say the guy in the sidewalk was black the two others that stopped were white
Invictus (240 D)

Could they have thought he was sleeping? I can't imagine people would just walk past a man who was quite obviously dead.

A kid in the building across the street from me died a few weeks ago. From what I hear it was a seizure, and since the ambulance got there on I think a Tuesday I have a horrible feeling he was there awhile. But the most shocking thing is how normal things have been. Apart from the windows of his single apartment being open for several days (lending credence to my horribly depressing theory), nothing has really changed on the street. Nothing was in the student paper and no email was sent out to us, which they tend to do anytime even the most minor crime happens. Even the guy's fraternity was having parties that weekend (I can see in their top floor from my window). A stark example of how little any of us matters to anyone but a really small handful of close friend and relatives. And even then...

So, I really need this guy to have looked like he was sleeping to have some faith in humanity right now. Was that the case, SantaClausowitz?

Poor defenseless black people, when will they learn to leave the white man alone?
he did not look like he was asleep, passed out from alcohol poisoning/overdose maybe, but he was in the middle of the sidewalk completely still and not moving at all and was not responding to attempts to wake him up. And it wasnt like 2 people at a time were passing this guy, he was in the middle of a huge crowd getting out of a sporting event.

Lopt (102 D)

All black people are racist, they think there race is equal to the white mans race, it's absurd. You example shows exactly that. Ever seen a white man dead on the sidewalk while people passed by? No? Yes, that's because there is a difference between black and white, good and bad and if you try to deny that as a black man you are nothing but a racist!
Invictus (240 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
Well then that's awful. Just awful. Good for you for being one of the people to finally do something.
maple- I will not answer that, dorry for the case of blue balls that decision has left you with

Lopt- I am hoping that is some kind of sarcasm but on this site you never know
Lopt (102 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
Why would it be sarcasm if someone speaks the truth?! Deep in your heart you know it too.
so because white people pass a black person in distress on the sidewalk, when if they saw a white person they would stop that means black people are inferior...

impeccable logic...
Lopt (102 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
I don't understand how you even dared to dignify my remarks with an answer.. You are not a RACIST are you?!!

And no, black people would also stop when they saw a white man lying on the sidewalk... to ROB him! Where as they saw a black man they would just walk on, cause the would know he's inferior and has nothing worth robbing anyway.
So yes, impeccable logic it is.
seriously what about this game brings the reactionaries out of the woodwork
trim101 (363 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
I work for an ambulance service and you would be surprised how many calls we get to to dead person in the street when we get there they are just drunk because the average person can't for some unknown reason tell when someone is breathing or not As long as it's not cold an alcoholic asleep on the sidewalk is in no real danger
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
Makes you think...

And it also makes me thing--SHUT UP, King Atom.

Seriously, a guy just DIED, and the first thought that comes to your advanced-ubermensch-mathematical=genius-wunderkind mind is "let's poke fun at the dead guy...and black people, too, why not?"

So DID he look like he was sleeping all that much, SC...or are people just all self-interested assholes?
Dejan0707 (1608 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
SC whether that man died or not, you showed to be quality moral human being who would help another human being in trouble...something that is rare in this days.

I had similar experience myself. It was rainy winter day, and just like in your case people turned they look in the other way and passed by. I called ambulance and they pick him over. I never find out did he survived or not. The thing is, people get sick, and die everyday...and one day one of us could be in that position on the streets....
Octavious (2701 D)

I had a similar experience returning from a night out clubbing in the city of Exeter. The differences being that the man on the pavement turned out to be alive, but rather drunk, and was getting increasingly annoyed by the steady stream of people (myself included) who kept going up to him and asking if he was ok. Eventually a couple of people pretty much frog marched him to a chair at the bus stop and called the police over to help sort him out and take him home.

As much as I would like to say that the reason for your experience, SantaClausowitz, is that humans fear death and are more likely to assume sleep or drunkeness and so avoid the man, that doesn't really explain it. The truth of it is that you just live in a really shitty part of the world full of a lot of shitty people. In other places people act very differently.
a1ml3ss (173 D)

It's also diffusion of responsiblity. In a crowd people are more likey to assume someone else can take responsibilty. If they'd walked past that man alone they were statistically more likely (though not guaranteed) to offer help.

Good for you SC.

To answer your question "WTF is wrong with people," see thread:
http://webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?viewthread=774069#774069

This is exactly what I was saying - you don't know the guy, so you just ignore him. You don't give a fuck. Same what you said Invictus. I have seen similar things happen Invictus and it really horrifies me.

Unfortunately, referencing your hope that he may have been asleep - I have seen a hidden camera test in which a woman who appeared to be drunk and/or homeless (was acting) stumbled around and then fell and "died" on the sidewalk in a major US city. No one did anything, so much as look at her, for about 30 minutes as she lay motionless in the middle of the sidewalk. They just walked around. Finally a couple reacted in the form of pointing and laughing.

And FINALLY an hour and half later an old homeless man bent down to see if she was alright.

Really does make you sick to your stomach.

I'm more sick about this than usual today - I just visited the slums of Dakar. Unbelievable.

"In other places people act very differently. "

Where? Not in my experience. Maybe in small towns where everyone knows each other, but you shouldn't have to know a person to help someone in need.
Lopt (102 D)

Homeless people are fun, I always try to poke at one when they are asleep or maybe dead, and then I laugh when they mrumble, or if they are dead and nothing happens, I laugh either way, homeless people are fun to play with.

@ Thucy

Like I said, the city of Exeter. The city of Plymouth is also very friendly. My grandad fell walking home from the shops a few months back and was instantly surrounded by people offering help. Same thing happened when an old lady tripped on a bus I was on last year. None of these people knew each other. They just helped because that's what people do.

Your experiences are very sad, and I genuinely feel sorry for you.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

lopt, i hope you change, friend.
Lopt (102 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
Why, what good would that do for me? I like the way I am. Hell, a lot better then being a funny homeless guy.. ever stopped wondering WHY no one helped him?

Perhaps it is because he isn't worth being helped?! Just because you have a somewhat human experience doesn't mean you ARE a human as a homeless guy..
steephie22 (182 D(S))
27 Sep 11 UTC
most humans aren't very human, everybody think his own race is fine and some people think everybody nice is fine but some people like Lopt think everybody lucky is fine and everybody else is not a human...
point is good humans are weird and bad humans are good in the eyes of bad humans...
stating good humans care about others...
in the eyes of the good humans everybody should be helped, this is pretty much my opinion, because really, if you give someone who just cut of your leg a cake without being sarcastic he likes you...
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Sep 11 UTC
lopt everyone is worth being helped, every deserves to be treated like a person. do you not understand the idea behind "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"?

do you not understand the idea behind "love your neighbor as yourself"?
steephie22 (182 D(S))
27 Sep 11 UTC
yeah lopt, if you go on like this to everybody you'll never get old in this life except if you expect others to do what you never wanted to...
if everybody was like you it would be just about killing everybody else before they kill you because they try to kill everybody else too...
Lopt (102 D)
27 Sep 11 UTC
That's all fake bullshit aimed at misleading the naive and to exploit them. Don't you understand there is nothing better then to be egotistical? ! There is nothing greater in live then yourself, well that and the WHITE man's human race.

Loving your neighbor, giving a black man a cake so that he likes you.. all ridiculous ideas.. Live is not about "liking" nor "loving" it's about SURVIVING, and survival of the FITTEST! That includes letting the black race rot, as they are inferior to me and other white man.

You think it's coincidence Africa is still one of the most underdeveloped continents in the world? That the most prosperous African nation, e.q. Libya has been cleansed from evil and brought under western influence? No, it is not coincidence, they are inferior and as such we should rule them, who gives a fuck if we exploit them, as long as I have a good live with all the luxuries and accessories. I don't need a good neighbor nor love when I can watch TV, browse the Internet and go too a football stadium to watch a couple of hero's do there thing! And I sure as hack don't have to waste time on a dumbass homeless guy, he deserves what he got!
