12-hour high stakes WTA gunboat?
Greetings all. I've set up a 12-hour per phase WTA classic gunboat with a password and was hoping to entice some of the more experienced Diplomacy veterans to join up for a high quality game. The entry fee is 333 D. Shoot me a PM if you want in. If you meet my moderately rigorous requirements (you've got some skill and don't make a habit of resigning games) I will send you the password. Thanks.

Hello, I'm going to be at the family cottage with no internet from Afternoon of June 30th to Evening of July 4th. I'm in 5, 2 or 3 day/phase games (none are anon) that I would need a sitter to enter 1-2 sets of orders for if I don't get pauses. anyone willing to help with that? Please PM me.

I tried to keep Turkey from winning.. I held him off for almost 5 years..

25 Jun 11 UTC
Why did you move to Alb instead of retreating Ion to Tunis!!! I was counting on that fleet for the stalemate, and then you went and threw the game to him!

But it wasn't as bad as Russia's asinine move to Burgundy from Berlin. What the hell?!?!
☺ (1304 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
And then you disbanded Ion in 1908 when I could have supported you to Tunis...
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
Why would I help you Stalemate after you prevented me from being able to do it in the North? Marseilles would have helped me keep Venice..
I can't imagine why no-one except ☺ and me voted cancel. I had my vote up until 1905 or so, and then people started to vote draw.

I am actually a bit proud of my play. In 1903, it looked like a sure three-way between England, Germany and me. I kept Russia alive, and supported Italy for a turn or two. And they did exactly what I wanted!

Sure, in the end I royally screwed up my tactics, but it's hard managing 16 units with only 5 minutes per deadline.
☺ (1304 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
Because you would have been in on the draw?
☺ (1304 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
And Bas, I may have been able to stop you even despite them had I not messed up and failed to move to Bur at the end. I can't believe I let you in...
Yes, Russia's sleek move to Burgundy messed up your whole plan. I had hoped he would do something silly like that. I had kept him alive until then, hoping he would in the end throw the win to me.

But I don't know whether that's why he made that move. We'd have to hear from him.
☺ (1304 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
That was seriously the worst move I've ever seen in a gunboat. I just... yeah. He was almost guaranteed a spot in the draw. I was furious.
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
I wouldn't have had to retreat to Tunis. I would have held the Ionian..
☺ (1304 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
But Tunis is the stalemate. It's the important territory...
Yes, you may have had a stalemate somewhere during the game. I don't know, I'm pretty horrible at tactics.
I agree with ☺. Ion and Tunis are way more important than keeping a fleet in Adr.
Russia would never have drawn. I would have retreated to allow you to finish him off. Had we played on, it might have been an English-Turkish two-way (although with no communication, that's hard).
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
After you took Tunis, I didn't think you wanted a Stalemate. I thought you wanted the Solo yourself, so you were grabbing all the SC's that you could.
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
Russia had a draw vote up almost all game.
☺ (1304 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
I was playing for a two way for a long time, but would have had no objection to keeping either Russia or Italy in it. But not both.

And no, Schmoo. Just no. I wasn't stupid enough to be trying to solo myself. Although I certainly would have taken it. It was clear for a long time that Turkey was going to solo if we didn't stop him.
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
I knew that, but that isn't what I thought after you took Tunis, I was thinking (based on your moves in the North) that you were smart enough to realize that if I lost it, I would lose to Turkey, as Piedmont S hold to Venice guarunteed me keeping that. and if you had brought another fleet down to Tyrrhenian, then we could have held him, but you made me destroy things faster than I could make a new line.
☺ (1304 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
You weren't trying to make a new line... You moved to Alb...
Yes, ETI three-way was the most likely result most of the time. And, given the behaviour of all players involved, the most deserving as well.
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
I had to. Because if he didn't move there this turn, he would have moved their next turn. And that would have given him a force of 4 to my 3 in Ionian, because (again, as I thought) you were just going to take SC after SC of mine, I told you. Had you left Spain alone, We would have easily drew it, because he wouldn't have taken Venice and got the extra Fleet on me. That is what killed my defense, is when I had to get rid of an army. you only need 2 Armies in the North to stalemate him. Burgundy, and Ruhr. Fleets can do the rest.
Piedmont can't support hold Venice. It's a fleet. "A unit can support action into a province where ti could normally move".
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
It hurt me when France didn't move.. Because I felt that if I didn't atleast grab Spain and Marseilles, that the E/G (which was there) was going to roll right around on me.. But then it all messed up when Austria came back, and Russia helped him despite being able to take Budapest on multiple occasions.
Oh, sorry. I see you are tlaking about something different.
Scmoo472 (1933 D)
25 Jun 11 UTC
I had an army in Piedmont and army in Venice. I had you locked unless I lost an SC, which happened when he took Spain from me. Fleet Holland, Fleet Kiel, Army Ruhr, Army Burgundy that locks Munich and Berlin for good.
I agree. England should have moved Mao-Wes instead of Mao-Spa. Wes goes to Tys, which means he's in time to hold Ion.

Still, the situation arould Munich was all but settled. Russia and Germany were still alive and kicking. I would at least have gained Munich, and possibly more.
Well, at least I've had some fun. Thanks to Scmoo and ☺ for playing and putting up an interesting challenge.

Now it's time to make dinner.

I'm sorry, but what incentive did I have to not screw over England after he rather opportunistically stabbed me as I struggled to stave off Turkey? None. He was the one who killed me, so I was going to do my damnedest to make him lose. I don't care if he or others felt like they deserved to be in a draw.

Finish the job next time instead of starting a temper tantrum after the fact.

Wow. Really? *That's* your response?

You could have had a draw, but you wanted to throw the game to Turkey instead?

This Time On Philosophy
In "The Odyssey" by Homer, Achilles, the elite hero of the Greeks, leads a large mass of unquestioning, robot-like followers, the Myrmidons, who are classically described as being "ant-people" in their nature. If we were asked which we'd rather be, a hero or a drone, most of us would choose the former, "drone" doesn't sound appealing...and yet, politically, we prefer the rule of masses over the few...so, which is preferable? Why? Elitists, Pluralists, ho! :)
