Game Error
For some reason, instead of showing how long each of my games has until the next phase, they all just say "NOW" which normally isn't the case unless it just became the new turn. Im wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same problem and if so how did they fix it?

Kubla Con/San Francisco Face to Face event Ranking System
At the Kubla Con F2F event, we had 3 previously all Email players playing FtF for the first time and they loved it. The ranking system uses separate scoring systems for each round so that you have to vary your play style.

Draw or win?
I understand the Gunboat WTA games exist, but why in regular games does it seem like players more interested in Draws than Wins? I think draws are reasonable when there are true stalemates, but VERY few other times. It bugs me for people to suggest ones, when it is clear someone could take an 18th sc. Thoughts or opinions on why its better to draw? Anyone?

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=60217, i don't believe anyone plans on drawing even though there are 3 CD's and they're the central powers. so i think this game will be england and france vs. turkey and russia?

Diplomacy
Cheers to all,

I was out and about browsing through various Diplomacy pages and came across this site. Quite interesting how many from different ages and skill levels can indeed play here. As an advanced Diplomacy player myself long out of practice, I would like to challenge the best on this website. There is only one way to be the best, it's to play the best. So hello all again, but I challenge you advanced players to a game. Look forward to playing with you.

Also, how do you create a game?

No offense, but you won't get the best of the best if you've never played here before. A lot of vets (like me) would be happy to play with you, but you're not going to play MadMarx the first time. (Watch him come prove me wrong)

That being said, I'm moving to Boston in a couple days and would love to start a game (I'm down to only one active currently) when I get settled in. I'll probably make a post in the forum about it, but I'll be sure to tell you.

You can create a game by clicking the New Button tab on the upper right menu.

new game at the top of this page.

some options, i suggest you play Winner Takes All, as it is closer to the board game's rules and of course the classic map.

You can password protect your game and then either post the password on the forums (so only people who see & read your invite can join your game) OR alternatively only send people the password by pm.

i might be interested in playing, but i'm not sure if you'd consider me to be 'best of the best'

Also, if you don't make games passworded, especially at the lower-point levels, you're likely to get people who will leave half way through, etc. I highly recommend advertising for an invitational game in the forums if you'd like to play one, and vetting all of the players so you know they don't have resigns first. Personally, I don't play non-live games that aren't password protected.

And welcome to the site. :-)

^^ What Orath said. WTA is the only legitimate way to play, if you ask me. There are any number of threads on the matter that I can dredge up for you if you'd like. :-)

Well consider this an invitation. I seem to have already started a game. It is a 10 point game, just to get my feet wet. But I will definitely send orathaic and...well, smiley face a passworded game. Does 40 D winner take all sound fair enough. I simply don't want to dip far below a hole I cannot rescue myself from.

I'll play you, Poltergeist. And don't be deceived by people's available or even total points. The real test of who is who is in the Monthly Ghost Ratings at http://tournaments.webdiplomacy.net/theghost-ratingslist

Check ou tthe link and you can see who has the progressive best scores each month and where their all-time monthly best scores are. Each month builds onto (or detracts from) the last so doing well will improve your rank and doing poorly will deduce it, but you don't get the wild moves of everyone starting from scratch each month and you don't deal with the unbalanced weighting of high pot versus low pot games.

also i'm afraid i do have two resigns, :( and they were league games, (though i did do well last season even with 2 resigns) but it was not my fault, my sitter didn't play for me... i suppose i should have gotten a better sitter or requested a pause...

still you'd be best avoiding people like me who have failed to keep playing...

26 May 11 UTC
I generally prefer larger pots, but obviously you can't bet more than you have. :-) 40 D is fine by me.

I also prefer anon, but it's not a *huge* deal. And if you could delay the starting time for ~4-5 days, that would be best.
Poltergeist (0 DX)
26 May 11 UTC
Draugnar, I will send you the password as well.

Question to all, what is a good day to start? A week? maybe a couple days from today? Also, what phases length would be good for all of you? 5 minutes seems much too short to do proper diplomacy. And 12 hours is pushing the fold. Does a day to two days sound good for you all?

Re: Resigns:

Generally 1-2 resigns is explainable, as in orath's situation. But there are players who resign in 30% of their games. Which is just despicable...

Smiley,

That is fine by me, I will create an anonymous, 40 point, winner take all game, with a yet unknown title. The phase length will be 36 hours (1 day 12 hours) and will begin in the next 5 days. Once I send you the password, feel free to send it to this MadMarx character you speak of, as well as any other well known good diplomacy players.

I prefer 24 or more hours per turn (1 Day+) but hate the 5 day turns. 40 D is fine for me as well, but if you do lose, you will get reloaded back to 100 anyhow. The points are there to prevent noobs from taking on too many games at once and you get docked your bet if you resign a game, so they have the added benefit of punishing those who would take on games and quit when they are behind.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 May 11 UTC
Oh, and you can set a "start date" on non-live games (over 1 hour phases) but the game will start as soon as every one joins. Best way to do it is to password it, set your phaselength, then give it a 10 day join time. That way, whenever whoever finally gets back and is available, the game will start, but it won't time out waiting for them to join unless they are gone more than 10 days. After that, the join length becomes irrelavent.

Welcome to the site, Poltergeist!

By the way, this site is organizing a face-to-face tournament for the weekend of June 11-12 in Boston, if you are interested and can make it to the area. Some of the top players will be there, 6 of the top 10 ghost ranked players, I believe, including MadMarx (#1 in both points and GR).

Smiley, since you are moving to Boston, will you be coming to the tournament?
Draugnar (0 DX)

And welcome from the Firewolf. :-)

Can't let Darwyn be more polite than me. :-P hehehe
Welcome Poltergeist!

You'll find that, generally speaking, the people who post on the forum are the better quality players on the site. I advise you to go to the ghostratings list linked above to find the truly best players on the site. I don't consider myself the "best of the best", but I'm certainly top 10% and would love to play.

Welcome to the site, LOVE THE NAME by the way. Makes me fear you in some sort of weird cruel way haha. If you are interested in a quick live game there's one starting soon to get your feet even wetter if you'd like. :)

yebellz,

I would love to play in Boston, however, due to economic issues it is not possible for me at this time.

Goldfinger, mr.crispy (I am sorry that made me chuckle), and yebellz,

Thank you for your welcome wishes as well. Mr. Crispy, I took your offer at the live game. I do wish to see how this plays out.
