We gotta do something about players dropping
There is nothing more annoying than playing a 2 day deadline with 6 players who are on the ball, and then one guy who decides to drop the game. There has to be a bigger penalty for dropping out of games. I think it's really poor form to drop a game without good reason, so maybe there should be a way to just drop a game and take the penalty.

Favorite Classic Territory?
Some territories are just more fun to own than others, be it for strategic value or "nyah nyah" effect on other players. I love Serbia, since it gives you an SC and can impact so many crucial Balkan provinces without being touched by the many navies swarming about the Med and Black Sea. Anyone else have sentimental favorites?

There's been a lot of talk about self-moderated forums lately.
And that's fine. I'm at peace with idea. But since we are supposed to moderate ourselves, I'd like this forum to consider a proposal or two.

The most important scifi story every told.
http://www.space.com/common/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=27719 What do you think is the most important scifi story every told? I'm assuming this means the impact on society, not personal favorate, best, or most realistic. I'd have to say Star Trek. The 1960s series not only spawned new series and several movies, inspired many scientist and enginers and innovators, and affected peoples veiws of the world.

Everywhere I post, it seems mapleleaf is running right behind calling me a specific name and I grow weary of it. So, maple, you got what you want. My decision is to leave the forums until I hear that maple has been banned. I will continue my games and will play in the Leagues and the next round of the GFDT, but this is my final participation in the forum. I don't need to be cyper harrassed by him and I'm just tired of it.

P.S. Have fun trolling with this post maple. It's the last you'll get from me.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

actually, i've seen calls for people to be banned. Counter calls for the forums to remain free and self-moderated.

If there is need to change things it will have to be discussed, and this thread seems to be as appropriate a place as any.

Draug, i have to agree with you, having seen posts by maple-leaf on other threads they are neither contributory nor useful. (i'm thinking of one particular thread where maple appears to be harassing obi) I feel the desire to ignore his posts and no specific need to ban him.

As for constructive suggestions, I don't know if it would be a massive server load to allow individuals ignore specific posts from selected/blacklisted users - but it's an idea if you're finding ignoring him yourself too much. (maybe a client side javascript... hmm)

lastly i'm glad you've brought up this thread, much as Maple himself didn't create his own thread to give out about people (which would be fine if it allowed conversation...) you have brought up a valid criticism of both the way the forum operates and the behavoiur of some members.

I can only hope the forum can have a constructive conversation about maple's behaviour and how best to react to it. (because i know at present that self-moderation is the prefered method which kestas has setup.)
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Honestly, Draug, I really enjoy conversing with you, but if mapleleaf is going to be banned, then you should be, too.

On numerous occasions, your actions have been wildly inappropriate and your defense has *always* been that the Forum should be unmoderated. This is an incredibly hypocritical stance to take.

Maple is probably my least favorite person on this Forum, but he should not be banned (unless there is to be major overhaul in the moderating of the Forum). You are not completely innocent in this; I've seen you pick fights with Maple a number of times. If you ignore him, he'll go away.

At least now that you're on the receiving end, you understand why people can get so offended by you. Now, grow a pair and stay on the Forum.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Also, isn't this the 4th time you've made a public announcement about leaving the Forum? : )
Mafialligator (239 D)
20 Dec 10 UTC
Yeah. I have to say, I don't think it'll last. Mapleleaf had a month or so where he'd find any post I made and within 5 minutes would post a reply full of homophobic slurs. After a month or so he got bored. Now I guess his target is you and obiwan. He'll get bored of you two soon enough as well. If you do let mapleleaf chase you off the forum then you let the troll win (granted a largely ineffective and unimaginative troll, but a troll nevertheless).

Awww... The Big Bad Marine got scared away because someone keeps calling him a mean name.

C'mon, Draug. What Maple says is nothing compared to some of the things (including threats of criminal violence) you've hurled at people. Instead of throwing a hissy fit and slinking away like a coward, why don't you grow a pair.
Serioussham (446 D)
20 Dec 10 UTC
I find this funny because the amount of times Draugnar has gone on about free speech when he has been insulting.
On that note I just don't see why people feel the need to insult each other at all, come on people, can't you feel the spirit of Christmas??
Chrispminis (916 D)
20 Dec 10 UTC
Yeah, I don't see mapleleaf getting banned unless he turns out to be a multiaccounter or something.

I gotta agree that this ultimatum is highly hypocritical coming from you considering the terrible tantrums you've thrown here without any official repercussions.

You're being trolled. I hope you stay, but if not, this is probably one of the worst ways to leave.
DJEcc24 (246 D)
20 Dec 10 UTC
I agree with Chris. I hope you stay but this is kinda bad way to leave. Its just maple. Just be the bigger person and don't reply to his posts. he's usually the only one giggling about his posts anyways
Mafialligator (239 D)
20 Dec 10 UTC
That's a good point DJEcc24. I always wondered when he was trolling me, whether or not anyone ever thought mapleleaf was clever, or funny, or justified, or like he had a point. Now I have my answer. = )

Draugnar:
I seem to remember reading some posts made by you vehemently defending freedom of speech... so, aren't you being incoherent? Noone will ban maple for what he says in this forum....

Your words:
"This is an unmoderated forum and we can discuss what we want until Kestas and the Mods (Rock On!) declare a subject "bannable" and they haven't done that to any subject yet."
and
"My brain says I should practice free speech and fight censorship wherever I may find it, Troodonte."
(in http://webdiplomacy.net/forum.php?threadID=646324&page-thread=1#threadPager)

So quit that attitude...no?

@ orthaic: "I don't know if it would be a massive server load to allow individuals ignore specific posts from selected/blacklisted users - but it's an idea if you're finding ignoring him yourself too much. (maybe a client side javascript... hmm)"

That wouldn't be a great solution, because if other posters made reference to a post by a user you had blacklisted, you wouldn't understand what they were referring to as you wouldn't have seen the blacklisted user's post.

@abgemacht: "Honestly, Draug, I really enjoy conversing with you, but if mapleleaf is going to be banned, then you should be, too. On numerous occasions, your actions have been wildly inappropriate and your defense has *always* been that the Forum should be unmoderated. This is an incredibly hypocritical stance to take."

I have to agree with this. You're being a hypocrite, Draug. If Maple deserves banning for insulting you, then you deserve banning for the horrible insults you've thrown at numerous others over the years.

Yeah, I only checked the logs here and got mighty confused. Hopping over to the gmail account it makes more sense. It's a pity that he didn't even bother to finish off his games.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

He said that he wanted to finish his games, just not participate in the forum. Could another mod have misinterpreted and thought that he wanted to be deleted?

Tom, that's initially what I thought, but he sent us a pretty explicit message saying that he had changed his password to a random string such that he could not ever log back in and that we should try to find replacements for him in his games.
