What *I'd* really love to know
Do any other "business professionals", persay, play Diplomacy? If so, what's your favorite method of economic analysis? Where do you see the world going in the next decade? How are you working to keep your skills up to date?

Middle Eastern History
I'm working on a curriculum for my AP World History class with a friend and it's my job to come up with resources covering Asia from 8000bc to 1450ad. I've found pretty much everything I need except for resources regarding Middle Eastern History. Do any of you know of good books that give a historical survey of the region in the time period I'm looking at? They can be online articles or books it doesn't matter.

Thanks.

So...Remember that "Star Trek Variant Map" I Brought Up Before?
I mentioned this summer that I'd like to try and work out a map for the Star Trek universe, with the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians, Dominion, Borg, and maybe one other race (some said leave it at six with those powers, some suggested one more race to make the usual seven) as the powers, the planets as centers/"land," and space/wormholes as the "sea" spaces. So...bringing that up to speed...

Support rules question
I have a question concerning the rules of cutting support.
Here's the hypothetical situation: I have an army in Belgium and a fleet in the North Sea. Germany has an army in Holland and an army in Ruhr. Germany orders Ruhr to Belgium supported by Holland. What happens if I convoy my army from Belgium to Holland via the North Sea? Does it cut the support or is it the same as if I attacked on land (i.e. Germany takes Belgium anyway)?

US gearing up for war in pakistan?
Seems like the rhetoric is getting stronger.

The US is already working with Pakistan forces against the Taliban in Pakistan, so I'd argue this is merely them making sure people know this is happening rather than risk it being "revealed" as a shock war people weren't told about by the media.
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
I'm asking if you think the US plans on increasing its presence/operations in pak.
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
With the missile stricks and I'm sure special ops already having been in Pakistan for a while, I'd say we already are. You also must recall this is an election year.
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
If mean a large presence of troops no. Pakistain already has one the largest armies in the world. What they may need is to be trained in some special ops but mostly need to root out radicals that have infiltrated some areas of their military.

@war - the issue on that one is deciding at what point people go from soldier to radical. Clearly its quite a range, but its far from a clearcut line.
After all, one leader may fund a local cell to remove a worse leader, even if the cell isn't something he'd support out of choice. Case in point - the west gave Saddam the weapons to fight off the Iranians.
Let's not forget that Pakistan has nukes. If the gov't there falls to the Taliban then the Taliban will have nukes. No "free" country can allow the gov't of Pakistan to fall.
warsprite (152 D)

"No "free" country can allow the gov't of Pakistan to fall." Hell few countries of any strip could afford the results of the Taliban having nukes.
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
And the US is the only country free enough right?
Sicarius, what are you implying?
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
@figlesquidge Not sure what you mean. Who to call radical?
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
Oh I wasnt implying anything. It just seems that whenever some one makes up a legit sounding reason to invade another country its usually the US they say should do it
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
Oh sure we going to invade a nuclear power.
The world survived Mao having nukes during the Cultural Revolution, North Korea having nukes in the midst of a famine which has lead to the reinvention of stone soup, Stalin having nukes during the most clinically paranoid part of a very paranoid life, India and Pakistan fighting a shooting war when both were nuclear powers, Israel having nukes when they were getting suprise attacked by four neighbors, France having nukes while losing Algeria and the 4th republic over the loss of Algeria, and South Africa in the tail end of the apartheid system, when they were convinced every black person in the world was part of a conspiracy to kill them and distribute their land. I fail to see the unique threat that the Taliban having access to the Pakistani nuclear arsenal.

All above were nation states with a clear chain of command for one. None thought that they would be rewarded with heaven for killing none believers.

say what you will about the taliban, despicable all surely, but they're not (totally) stupid. they did run a country for along time, and continue to still
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
@Sic Most of those who ran the country (if you want to call it that) are not there any more, at least according to the report you have posted. Also they are fragmented mostly along tribal lines sometimes shoting at each other.
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
Well if they're divided and shooting each other somehow they're still managing to bet the US

they arent beating the us most of the taliban are dead and scattered, hiding in pakistan's tribal region
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
That depends on who you listen to. Going by what the Taliban say is no more objective perhaps less so than formal US statements.
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
Thats not true the taliban are still active in afghanistan. If they werent, who is the US still shooting at?
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
If they are beating us why are some willing to have informal talks and become part of the goverment.
Shep315 (106 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
the main enemy is the al-qaeda they are the ones that attacked us and just because an enemy is still fighting doesnt mean that we are losing, they are fanatics
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
heres a better question. we've been there for almost a decade, whats changed? Why is "the best fighting force on earth" still struggling to defeat them?
warsprite (152 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
Shep315 I think is confusing Taliban and Alkida
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
maybe the US are fanatics lol. Taliban are evil sure, but they dont even come close to starting as many wars as the US. US initiates/joins an armed conflict on average every 2 and a half months.
Sicarius (673 D)
30 Oct 10 UTC
@ warsprite, i doubt it. he at least spelled it right
Shep315 (106 D)

well the point is the have been fighting in that country for thirty years since the soviets invaded in 79 and antiguerilla operations take time, especially when a bunch of politicians back home are more concerned about winning an election than winning the war

Game messages stat?
So there's this stat on my profile called "game messages." I would expect that every piece of press I send would increase this stat, but it's been sitting at 42 for a long time now. Am I misinterpreting the meaning of the stat or is it just the mystique of 42?
