Political Leanings
What is the average political persuasion on webDip?

I myself (as a Canadian) am a firm supporter of Conservative Party of Canada (Current PM Stephen Harper). My political philosophy as a whole I would say leans to the Libertarian/Conservative front. How about you guys?

right wing conservative republican. not too happy with Obama but it think foxnews blows some things out of proportion
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I would suggest that overall there is a conservative edge to things, despite a majority of students - traditionally a left-leaning bracket.
Also, I'd just point out that where people view their left/right from varies massively based on their nation.
Personally, I'm slightly right, but nothing past the current drift of British Centre. I'd like to see the tories in power, and in an ideal world with Vince Cable in the Treasury.

If we're taking US politics as a reference, I think I'd probably put me to the left of Obama :P

I see a lot of my political thought represented by Michael Moore's positions on the State's role in economy, the big corporations, war, the industry and Healthcare. I'd love to see him tackle the issue of Education.

This is just a general reference, the actual politicians I'd support are absolutely unknown to most if not all of you.

I am definitely a Cameron man myself (but why Vince Cable?). On Obama I think it is important to respect the man in the sense that he is the President of the United States of America, but he took a ridiculous Bush budget, and made it much worse. There is no time to waste with American budget cuts. Also he squandered the most global political capital anyone has had in the last 75 years on poor attempts to reform Health Care. Hindsight is 20/20, but if he wanted to do it, he went about change the wrong way.

And I don't think I've seen world renowned leaders that would be comparable either.
DJEcc24 (246 D)

well Obama was voted most liberal so you would have to be a major liberal to be to the left of him =)

I hate the word liberal. I think it only applies to US politics, if it even does apply correctly there.
DJEcc24 (246 D)

its changed over time to what it means. conservative and liberal somewhat swapped in a way.
KaptinKool (408 D)
10 Feb 10 UTC
Yes definitely. I would totally classify myself as a "classical-liberal".
@Xapi - what do you mean when you say:
"And I don't think I've seen world renowned leaders that would be comparable either."?
Xapi (194 D)
10 Feb 10 UTC
Besides, Obama being voted the most liberal was most likely before he sent more troops to the wars he was voted to end, failed to deliver the healthcare reform he was voted to put forward, etc. etc.

@Xapi - what do you mean when you say:

Comparable to the people I'd see myself represented by.

yes this is true as well.

what do you guys think of the proposed health care how it is?

In answer to your original question.....

I would imagine the average on this site is somewhere pretty close to the political middle.

Of course, if you average Michael Moore and Rush Limbaugh, you're somewhere near the political middle :-D

@Xapi "Besides, Obama being voted the most liberal was most likely before he sent more troops to the wars he was voted to end, failed to deliver the healthcare reform he was voted to put forward, etc. etc."

I agree, he hasn't been as liberal as people thought he would (which I don't mind at all), he was voted the most liberal Senator (pre-Nov.2008). Now some people are calling his presidency "Bush's 3rd Term".
Xapi (194 D)
10 Feb 10 UTC
The thing is, from my point of view, the whole US politic scenario is shifted to the right.

Obama, living in Argentina, would be considered a centrist at best, and in the US he's "voted the most liberal".

Michael Moore would be considered a center-left guy (wich is what I consider myself, BTW).
KaptinKool (408 D)
10 Feb 10 UTC
Actually Obama's Senate voting record would be left wing by any nations standard.
jbalcorn (429 D)
10 Feb 10 UTC
Obama was voted most liberal by who? Fox News viewers?

I'm a progressive. I'd probably be a little left of center, but the Republican party has embraced the culture wars to such a degree that they have pushed me farther left. 8 years of Bush made me sick and tired of "conservative" policies. I was watching Newt Gingrich the other night and every time he opened his mouth I thought to myself "Does he really believe that bullshit? Or is he just pandering to some base to start his presidential run?"

If the libertarians would discredit the Birthers, and the "Socialist/Nazi/Communist" name-callers, I might have much in common with them. But as long as the "Conservative" movement in this country practices the politics of division, of "Us vs. them", then I'll need to stand in opposition. Obama is no Socialist, If anything he's more middle-of-the-road than many people I know would like. And he's a natural-born American, and a Christian (although that last part gets no extra credit in my book).

@jbalcorn
http://www.nationaljournal.com/voteratings/
National Journal Ranked Obama as the most liberal Senator based off of his voting record. They are a non-profit non-partisan centralist agency.

Well, America has been really right-wing for the past while... even Obama would probably be considered conservative in Canada with sending all those troops to Afghanistan and all.

American here - slightly right of centrist on most things, but slightly left on others.

Bailouts:
I believe government should stay out of pirvate industry except to curb existing abuses and prevent them in the future (and prevent the entire collapse of western civ as the banking crisis could have lead to). But I don't think we should have bailed out the auto industry. We have enough foreign manufacturers who actually assemble their product here that had one or two of the big three failed, they others (foreign and domestic) would have picked up the employment slack eventually.

Healthcare:
I believe we need a plan in place, but not a hyper expensive one that is going to tax the economy to death. What needs to be done is to control the rising cost of healthcare and make the insurance industry competitive to bring rates into check, then provide some subsidies based on need and availability to those who are uninsured for whatever reason. But having an insurance option run by the government is a bad idea.

The wars:
Afghanistan: We should be there and we should already have finished the job.
Iraq: We should never have gone (but we have to finish) and it caused us to not finish the job in Afghanistan.

Taxes:
Higher taxes means people can't afford to buy "stuff" which means the economy becomes repressed going from recession into depression. Taxes have to be cut to encourage spending. and this means the middle class (two income households under $200K/yr, individual under $100K/yr), not breaks for the rich.

Abortion:
If it feels pain and has fingers and toes it has rights. However, the mother has a right to life that supercedes the baby's. If her life is in danger, she should have the medical option to abort the baby.

Suicide (assisted or otherwise):
The right to life includes the right to chose how and when to live or end it. I believe suicide and the assisting thereof is an individual's private decision and government should keep it's fingers out of it.

The Middle-east in general:
The US should do one of tow things. Keep it's opinions (and it's aid) to itself, or tell Israel and Palestine to knock it off. We can enforce that by threatening to join the fight if Palestine keeps it up, and threatinging to withdraw all of our aid if Israel keeps it up.

The UN:
Let's just say the initals stand for the Useless Nations... 'Nuff said.

I think that covers some of the biggest ones.

@Skies
He would not be considered Conservative. The Liberal Party of Canada committed to Afghanistan not the Conservatives. Socially he is still very liberal (even for Canada) and economically as well (he is a defacto-socialist).
jbalcorn (429 D)

@KaptinKool. He was RATED the most liberal. He wasn't VOTED the most liberal.
jbalcorn (429 D)

KaptinKool (408 D)

@KaptinKool - again, with the "socialist". Do you even know what a socialist is?
KaptinKool (408 D)
10 Feb 10 UTC
@Draugnar - Surprisingly I agree with you on everything except for:
-Iraq, I believe that in hindsight the mission was still justified.
-Isreal (I am very pro Isreal)
