Question
Hey, so I was cruising the forum yesterday and I noticed a lot of chatter about some "World Cup of Diplomacy," and I couldn't find any posts saying what it was exactly. Therefore here I ask for either a link to this cleverly hidden article, or a brief explanation.

PlayDiplomacy.com has been down all day...
...and I have a bad feeling about it. My Top 20 ranking and $100 support payment down the drain! But even if that site has bitten the dust, at least its demise has prompted me to see what else is out there.

I can see right away that this site has some intriguing features.

Looking forward to playing my first games on this site. My first will be "Game for Refugees"...

well Eagle - I think you'll find that this community has a lot to offer... not only some great players and great play, but also a great community of supportive players. best of luck as you get started here, and we hope you decide to stay ;-)

to top it off - you get ALL the features for free!

Welcome to webDip, Eagle.

PlayDip is actually based on an old version of this site, so if you liked playDip, you'll probably like webDip much better. The best part is, it's free and constantly being updated. We also have an excellent mod and dev team that are very responsive to the community.
denis (864 D)

And you can enjoy live games and various other features such as better map and an easier to use forum and messaging system... All for free

Ah playDip. Am I the only one who still holds a grudge against them for taking the code and passing it off as new?

Wow, you gave $100? I'm sure any donation here would be greatly appreciated by Kestas, but if you've just lost that much I can understand not wanting to take too bigger risk so far.
I'll be next on the line to say how awesome this site is though, and its got a much better history than playDip! Its been around since 2004 in some version or other (I joined back end of 06) and is continuing to grow and improve.
As mentioned above, the forum can sometimes be full of game requests, but if you start a genuine conversation or debate you'll always get an interesting and thought provoking response.
denis (864 D)

And if you really are addicted to some variants
goondip.com ( aka kestas's lab rat ;) ) has a lot to offer as well as some new perks. But for quality play stay here.
Eagle (100 D)
21 Dec 09 UTC
While googling around for a new dip site, I became aware for the first time of the code piracy accusations. Very interesting! Not something they talk about on PlayDip, as you might guess.
denis (864 D)
21 Dec 09 UTC
Why do you like play dip? I joined that site
before here and couldn't get a game started for weeks
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Shocker that isn't it Eagle :P
Hard to admit your code is heavily based on someone elses then claim you've spent thousands of dollars developing it! Sure is hard to take a piece of working software, copy in some descriptions from wikipedia (seriously, I remember having a look round playDip, and the help section is almost a direct lift)

Anyway, you've seen the light now - welcome!

I joined playdiplomacy recently (yet to play a game though). Thought I should probably see what it is like.
Yes we know the site is based on Kestas code, and no they didn't give him proper credit. For shame. I saw a thread a while back where the site owner was celebrating one year of operation and he gave thanks to all the people who helped him, including the Romanian software developers he hired - but no mention of Kestas. That was wrong.
That said it has a lot of members - probably more than wedip, but less active players. The forums are friendly, and they look like they have some good conversations.
The players there say they are bewildered by our map. Apparently the movement arrows are off putting to some. Personally I like the arrows.
A few of there players joined this site recently to check it out (in the lead up to the intersite tournament that TGM is organizing). One recurring comment is that they like the turn orders input system here better.
I'll be very interested to see how the sites' players level of play compare. No doubt they have at least a few top notch diplomats.

I should clarify one point in my post... "and no they didn't give him proper credit." - past tense.
Actually the site does include mention that that playdip is partly based on phpdiplomacy - so while there was an issue of credit, it was resolved.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
22 Dec 09 UTC
It was resolved, although I for one am not impressed with the mention given - partly based is a real understatement. Anyway, I won't get started on this one - its a pet issue of mine.

Yes, I'd like to see that game. As a side note, I hope we get a good team to represent us here!

After 18 hours of downtime, the PlayDip server is back, so the post mortem was premature. Still, this is an interesting site. I like the bids & point system. I think I'll stick around.
spyman (424 D(G))
22 Dec 09 UTC
Give it a try Eagle. I have just joined a playdip game. We can compare notes - impressions of each others sites: likes, dislikes etc.
spyman (424 D(G))

Eagle, one thing that is really good about this site is the Ghostrating system, which has been developed by the Ghostmaker. It's an Elo style rating sytems of players abilities, like the system used to grade Chess players. It is not an *official* part of the site, but all players are listed and graded.
spyman (424 D(G))
22 Dec 09 UTC
The Ghostmaker also organizes tournaments and leagues - so this a very good site for competitive play.
Has anyone got a link to TGM's site? I thought I had it bookmarked but I can't find it?

i met playdip first, but its bad quality is obvious. the first number means how many games u have won or drawn. the second number is ur score, based in something they call "fade-echoes".
b.t.w. i'm trying to access goondip but i can't enter with my webdiplomacy nick, and i tried to register as other person, and i can't either. someone can help me?

i want also say that there's an interesting variant in playdip (though i've not played it cos i wouldnt pay any mony): it's standard diplomacy except cos u don't know where r the units of ur opponents, as if u were fighting in the fog

What is up with all password games?
It seems impossible to find a standard game that doeesn't require a password... why is this?

Or is it somehow easy to obtain the passwords needed?

gunboat - no in game messaging.
The turn is set to 1 day, but there is no reason to take very long to finalize. The long time period is for you to think about moves.
To prevent cheating, the game will be anonymous.

What if the emperor was inoperative, and didn't intervene after Nagasaki? How many more nukes would the USAAF have thrown at 'em before the invasion? Who would have led the invasion? What about casulties?
