Minor Bug Report
When changing a move order that had a "via land" clause, to a support move order, the drop down for the "via" clauses persisted, bring a messagebox regarding "What did you just update?" I just set to hold and updated to clear it. Not a significant issue., but thought you might want to know.

Maybe TGM should be charging for them, then? ;)

Remember, he does that for free, because he enjoys it, but the more he gets bugged, the less enjoyment he gets, the more it becomes a chore... So I'm sure he's busy and will get to it when he can... :)

Dude, calm down.

TGM, does this completely voluntarily. He'll put them up when he can. There's nothing more annoying than a person demanding something of someone else while they sit back and do nothing...

Abgemacht, I'm quite sure many of the people here would gladly volunteer to do the work.

I'm just going to use this opportunity to praise TGM one more time. The new order placing interface is basically the most amazing thing ever in the history of amazing things forever.

And also thank him for the time he puts into the Ghost-ranking!

The interface (and site in general) is Kestas' work.

I wish someone would explain what is the Ghost rating and how it is made. I understand that Ghostmaker creates it but what is it based on? Why is it better than the point system?

How was it used to determine the Autumn leagues.

Ghost's explanation doesn't really point to how points is a useless method of ranking, so I will briefly.

First off all, points only show how many you can still spend, not how much you have invested in games. It doesn't really make sense that if I join a game then the relative ranking will go down.

Secondly, it doesn't reflect the relative skill of other players. I've played alot of organised games with really good players for example, its only been 5 D to enter. They may have been alot harder to win than most games on this site, but the points just didn't reflect that.

Third, you can lose points. Say for example, I play fifty 5 point buy-in games wta and win them all. Thats crazy. I have won 50 games straight. That would win me 1750 D. I think it would be safe to say that I am amazing. Now if I joined a super high pot game for 1650 D, and then lost, my record would be 50 wins and one loss (or even a survive in wta) but my point total would reflect me having the same rank as someone with 50 losses. Indeed, someone with 1 win, 50 losses would have a higher rank than me.

Fourth- Points inflation. The nature of the game means that if you are of moderate ability your point total should go up. Lots of bad players join, deposit points, then cd or lose. Good players that hang around should always get more points. What does this mean practically? Well take my 50 win example. He could go undefeated. But if he takes a break from the site, after a while tons of people will have passed him just because he isn't keeping up. Also, it means that as the site ages the top players will have point totals (this is something we see now) that are basically unacheiveable, even by really good players.

Fifth, points replenish themselves. So you could lose a bunch of games and still be back at 100. Thus you can play the system by betting the house. Someone who plays high risk will probably have a high point variance, but will at some point have a really high total, reflecting not his skill, but his luck of recent days.

Anyways, thats all I can think of right now. But I think it should be clear to everyone that points are meaningless except to control how many games new players join.

All of those five issues rely on the player either betting far too many or far too few of his points. Bet 1/5th of your points in each game and all of those issues become irrelevant

@Centurian-I agree wity your points. But now can you explain how that GHost rating really works? I've read the link but I need a translation into simple English for us dummies
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

The ghost rating better rates performance and gets closer to rating skill than any other system...
Crazyter (1335 D(G))
24 Oct 09 UTC
@Steven-yes it doesl BUt can anyone explain that formula in plain English? For example if I draw with Madmarx versus a newbie, it will give me a better score, right? how does it work?
dave bishop (4694 D)
24 Oct 09 UTC
i think the issue of your rank being based on available points rather than total points is a problem with the points system that could and should be fixed.
I also think, kestas, if its advisable to bet a fifth of your points, that there should be a limit on the percentage of points you can bet on a game, especially for new players

steven and crazyter - here is my understanding of how the GR works...

each of us have a 100 rating when we join. each game we join, we "bet" 5% or 1/20th of our rating which goes into the 'pot' for that game.

so if you have 6 people with 100 ratings and 1 player with 1000 rating, then the game is worth 6*5 (30) + 50 so 80 pts total.

if someone gets a solo, they get 80 pts... if its a 2way draw, they each get 40 pts etc. this means that if a really highly ranked player plays a bunch of really lowly ranked players and wins easily (as he/she should) then he/she wont get a big boost b/c he/she invested a lot more points into the game than the lowly ranked players... but if instead they player higher ranked players, they are likely to pick up more points for a win since higher ranked players 'bet' more rating points since they have more.

i hope i explained that well...

FWIW I'm not saying there aren't issues with the points system regarding ranking (the points system makes compromises in order to have other qualities, like not having a below-starting-point ranking which encourages creating new accounts).
All I'm saying is the issues posted above are related to having silly betting patterns rather than issues with the points system

Support Moves
Is anyone else having trouble supporting convoys? I have an ally who is trying to support a convoy move and he says it's not giving him the option. I tested this in one of my games to see if the option would come up, and it's not giving me the option to either.

Any of you able to support a convoy move (not convoy, but support the army from one land to the new land)?
