Any way to delete my old account?
I accidentally made two accounts - Moltke and Acosmist. I want to get rid of Moltke (with which I haven't played any games). Is there any way to do this?

Okay, so this came to me very suddenly, so I'm unsure as to whether it will actually work. However, leagues now are kind of weird to me since winning one game basically means you lose all other 3 (or close to that since everyone will want to eliminate you).

This is unavoidable, and it makes the league seem like all 4 games are part of 1 bigger game.

I propose the following:
All league games start at the same time. Make their phase timers around 36-48 (alternativly you can start 2 of them at the same time, and then the other 2 after).
Additionally, finalizing will not be allowed, so that the games will progress at identical times.

I'm not saying this will completley eliminate all of the metagaming, since if someone wins one game, and the others are will going on, it can influence the outcome. However, it will sure as hell cut down on the amount of metagaming, and make each game stand on it's own much more, since you won't be able to see outcomes of the games, especially during the first two years, where if you are a league leader, you can bet your ass you are about to be reduced to 0 centers.

this would help with the length of season issues, too. i like the idea.

why didn't you put it in your e-mail reply must more effective :P
gjdip (1084 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
Very good idea. We're playing at least three games simultaneously, anyway.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
16 Jul 09 UTC
I don't know about the not finalizing bit. Not sure it matters that much. Especially since the games will get out of synch when one has a retreat phase and another does not, or even that rare event when there is no build phase.

Plus, if someone is in a strong position to win in one game, the others may still gang up on him in the other games. Also, if one game gets drawn, that outcome would affect the other games as well.

So I'm not sure you can get the purity you are looking for.

Instead, don't win the first game. Go for a 3 or 4 way tie. Then win the second game which should give you a great shot at 1st or 2nd.
wooooo (926 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
I didn't say it would solve all problems. Just some. It is meant to balance it as much as possible. Not finalzing is key here, as it keeps the game relativly close to each other (not 100%, but at least never more than a season or year apart).
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Jul 09 UTC
i think the not finalizing part is actually not that necessary. if people are in the habit of finalizing, they'll do it across all four games. if not, they won't.
Centurian (3257 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
I would support this. But it certainly could only be done with max 4 games, and the period right before the start would be pretty devoid of games.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
I dislike it.

Very much so.

Is metagaming really an issue?
wooooo (926 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
Yes. A huge issue. All diplomacy is based on previous outcomes.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
But we all know the outcome, we all play with the same information.

I think starting more than one league game at the same time would be a drag.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
This does come with an increased risk of Cross-gaming, however. I'm going to mull it over for a bit. With 4 games played simultaneously, I would suggest that 50 hrs phases is a must.

This would make alot of the problems I have running them smaller, but I don't intend to make that the reason for my decision either way.
Troodonte (3379 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
I agree, but if phases were 48h+, too allow people to play other games besides the league games.
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Jul 09 UTC
that would help for the people who are used to those longer turns.

after thinking more on it though, i wonder if it is so bad that people let the league position affect their play. think about a sports league - you might play your hardest against a team that is ahead of you in your division, right?

if you do manage to solo in the first game or two, you are so far ahead that it's really hard for anyone else to catch up, even if you are eliminated from all the other games. but i guess it can be less fun to get ganged up on. still, that's the life of the tall poppy!!!
gjdip (1084 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
@djbent: What you are describing is illegal in sports. In most football (soccer) leagues you get three points for a win, one for a draw and zero for losing. Teams get more points by beating each other than drawing twice but the repercussions if they were found out would not be worth it.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
That's my sentiment, Miss Bent, and being suffering from the tall poppy sindrome myself now, I can say you always have tools at your disposal to diplomate with.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
@gjdip: What????

It's illegal to play your hardest?
wooooo (926 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
Illegal to collude. That is, to only try against the first place team and to "soft play" weaker opponents. Although, it is different in sports, since there aren't 7 people playing at once, so everyone has an even shot at winning a 1v1. In dip, you get ganged up on, you are done.
gjdip (1084 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
@Xapi: No, of course not. But it is illegal to agree that we both win our home games against each other instead of risking two draws.
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Jul 09 UTC
@gjdip - i didn't phrase it properly

and obviously the analogy doesn't work completely as you have two teams rather than 7 in each match

what i meant was, if the yankees are leading in the eastern division, and they are playing the red sox who are behind by a few games, the redsox know that ranking and it provides extra incentive for them to play hard.

if the united states soccer team and trinidad and tobago team face off during the first round of the world cup, and they've each lost to the two other teams in their group, then they have extra incentive to try to win the game they play against each other. no?
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Jul 09 UTC
the point is, no one should be agreeing to anything in any game but the one they are in. letting the person's ranking influence how you approach them or organize an alliance is fair game.

in some games, you might find yourself with a player ranked much higher than you in ghost rating. you may then seek to eliminate that player, while ensuring you either win or participate in the draw, so that you're own ranking will improve more (since by the odds that person should beat you, not the other way around). this is the same concept, really, only more extreme.
gjdip (1084 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
@djbent: Agreed.

And, of course, the ganging-up thing doesn't work in sports. All the teams can hate the leaders but they can only take them on one at a time.
wooooo (926 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
That isn't true in baseball. The red sox would try their hardest in all games, not just against the yankees, since you get the same amount of points for winning against other teams. Naturally, winning against the yankees also gives the yankees a loss, but that doesn't mean they won't try their hardest elsewhere.

You can't really compare this to sports though, since it is all based on 1v1 outcomes, not the outcome of a 7 player game. If that were hte case, the 6 baseball teams would say, lets eliminate the yankees and then play it out.

The point of dip is to be played on an individual basis. If league games could be played without names written on the top, that would be the best. That isn't possible now, so something needs to be done so that the games influence eachother as little as possible. This is the best I could come up wth.
gjdip (1084 D)

Mmm . . . Anonymous games . . .
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
If the USA and Trinidad & Tobago face each other on a world cup, I will shoot myself in the foot.

Putting aside the impossible analogy, Miss Bent is right.

I will put it differently.

Say a team plays a two game (Home-Away) knockout round, where the best result advances to the next stage.

Game 1, team A wins 2-0 at home.

In game 2, playing Away, and knowing that even loosing 1-0 they'll still take the series, do you think they'll play the same strategy?

The answer is: no.

There are plenty of other examples, specially when there's a demotion system (if you are in a danger area regarding demotions, and you play the league leader, you might play for a draw, but if you're facing the team sitting at the last spot to keep the division, you're gonna want to defeat that team more than anything, a draw is a bad result for you).
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
Anonymous games are impossible. You'd be able to tell who the guy is by how they write most of the time, or at least form a patter (Game 1 Turkey writes just like Game 2 England, etc).
wooooo (926 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
Honostly, it doesn't matter what sports teams would do. Sports teams for the most part play their best every game. If they see a stratagy isn't working, they change it so that they can win, not so that the other people won't win. That is the fundamental flaw in your argument. You seem to think all these teams are trying to make the first place team lose. They aren't, They are trying to win. And in dip it should the same. Each player should try to win at all costs, and because of the league format, that encourages metagaming. Each game needs to be played on it's own. That needs to be accomplished somehow.
gjdip (1084 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
wooooo, you are sooooo right.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
I disagree. You want to win the league. You want results that help you win the league. In 1v1 sports, this results are often wins, but sometimes a draw can be a good result for you.

This is good play, playing to get the league. Even being tall poppy , you can play to ensure that no one else gets a solo, even if you get eliminated in the process, and then, you win the league, congrats!

Cross-gaming is bad, it's tit for tat, and, being part of a secret negotiation, unlevels the field. With this proposed solution, you're just making it worst.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Jul 09 UTC
@ woooo: In most sports in the world, a draw is an actual possible result.

Asking for a pause in a no press game
I've been informed that a funeral which I need to attend is going to take place on Monday, so I'll be away for a couple of days. I'm in the middle of a no press game - is it reasonable to request a pause in global chat, or should I just go CD? I assume the former but I'm not sure of the etiquette.
