A Music Request...
Can anyone tell me something meaningful about Joy Division?

I know the basics (and about the film) but would appreciate anything of note, such as:

Do you know of any (named) band that covers/has covered them?

I have no interest whatsoever in their music or 'legacy', I am fishing for ammunition to settle a long-running argument. Thought I should let you know so that you don't spill your heart out to me and then get told that I don't actually like them...

Radiohead covered Ceremony, I know of a Killers cover of Shadowplay, and there is an Innerpartysystem cover of Transmission. There have surely been more covers, but that's what I found searching through my music collection.

Thanks, that is exactly what I am looking for.

Would you mind telling us what this argument is about? If you're trying to say they were anything less than a huge influence on the music that came after them, you're wrong.
I'm not going to fight about whether they were a good band though, that's a taste thing.
flashman (2274 D(G))
11 Jul 09 UTC
It concerned a remark I made in a wider argument that I'd never seen a band cover Joy Division. I was flamed for that, even though it was and still is true, but I realised at the time that it was probably a taste thing and that the bands I went to see played their own stuff anyway, no room for covers.

As for influence? That is an argument we could have another day... ; )

Define 'greatest'...

It's so nice to see our resident troll rear his ugly head in a decent thread to ruin it.
hellalt (70 D)

ruining a thread about joy division just by claiming one of their songs is the best of all time?
greatest: most played, best accepted, cult
Submariner (111 D)

Their fans tend to be a bit over the top in their devotion... I had a flatemate at Uni who had made a tape with 'Love will tear us apart' recorded all the way through on both sides so he could listen to it over and over as he paced round his room.

Thank god for the repeat function on iTunes :)

Two of those statements fail the test of truth... The other fails to support your case even if true:

Most played, certainly not, I would imagine that a song such as, well, Imagine, would shade it, as would Candle in the Wind, by a mile - and that is based on sales, requests etc... Candle is the only single ever released by a single artist in three successful versions;

Best accepted? Who by?

Cult... Yes, but that does not make it the 'most' anything, there are a number of cult songs... Including Candle in the Wind after it was (unfortunately) re-worked to go with the whole Princess Diana business...

For a test of greatness, you need something objective and demonstrable.

That last post being for hellalt, of course...

An interesting observation from the submariner...

I shared rooms at Uni with a Motown devotee, harmless stuff. He though took exception to my Krautrock collection and although I listened on headphones, took every opportunity to attack my 'lack of taste'. P G Ross, are you reading this? Well, I still like Amon Duul II !
EmperorJake (200 D)
11 Jul 09 UTC
@flashman: I'd say that most good music has nothing "objective and demonstrable" about it.
flashman (2274 D(G))
11 Jul 09 UTC
I can accept that view, but 'he' introduced the idea of there being a greatest ever song, and that is a statement that assumes that there is a test of greatness.

Nine Inch Nails made a cover of "Dead Souls" for the soundtrack of "The Crow". I have a cover of "Love will tear us apart" done by The Cure, but I think it was registered live and never officially released. I think both Calexico and Simple Minds also made a cover of "Love will tear us apart".
Moby made a cover of "New Dawn Fades". And I am sure there's much more around...

This is very interesting. Do I have to go back and admit that I was, at least, morally wrong?

YES :)

Here's a very long list of Joy Division covers (just googled "joy division covers")

Now the really interesting question I find as it relates to Joy Division is this:

Did you like it better as Joy Division, or New Order (the band after the death of Ian curtis)?

I personally, despite really really enjoying Joy Division, (and I know this is probably a minority opinion among may music fans) find that I generally prefer New Order.

candle in the wind? i m going to puke now. i could have Elton John shot and killed with no hesitation with hungry stray dogs eating his corpse.

French music proejct Nouvelle Vaugue do lounge/bossonova version of Love Will Tear Us Apart. (Nouvelle Vauge do a lot of covers).
Interesting band Nouvelle Vauge; the project leaders deliberately chose singers who are unfamiliar with the original songs they cover; the result is fresh take on some classic songs.
flashman (2274 D(G))
12 Jul 09 UTC
Irrelevant. You mentioned songs, he wrote songs.
DrOct (219 D(B))
12 Jul 09 UTC
Sorry I could have phrased that better. They were Joy Division, but after Ian Curtis' death, the band reformed as New Order. I love Joy Division but find that for some reason most of the time I prefer New Order.
flashman (2274 D(G))
12 Jul 09 UTC
I should perhaps say, 'writes' or even 'co-authors'...
spyman (424 D(G))
12 Jul 09 UTC
I am massive New Order fan - big Joy Division fan too, but New Order were my favourite band when I was in high school (along with the beatles).
flashman (2274 D(G))
12 Jul 09 UTC
I will also state for the record that I have only ever enjoyed two covers in my whole life. My general position is to prefer, by far, the original work of original musicians.

I tend to have a highly prejudicial view of artists/bands that cover, and an even lower one of those whose claim to fame is a set of remixes.
spyman (424 D(G))
12 Jul 09 UTC
What's irrelevant Flashman?
spyman (424 D(G))
12 Jul 09 UTC
There are lots of great cover version of songs - sometimes better than the original. Take for example "With a little help from my friends" by Joe Cocker. That's much better than the Beatles version (sorry Ringo).
There are many great artists who have built fantastic careers out of their ability to interpret other people songs. I dare say a good portion of Frank Sinatra's reportoire had previously been performed or recorded by earlier artists.
spyman (424 D(G))
12 Jul 09 UTC
Glen Miller is another example. I don't think he wrote anything. But he made brilliant and original arrangements of existing songs.

Interesting Discussion.
It struck me we haven't had any interesting ethical/political/historical/other debates for a while, and they're always good. Unfortunately I can't think of a topic...

Unpause a game
We kind of have a problem in the game "Operation Big Brother". The german guy got banned, so the game was automaticly in Pause for waiting a remplacement.
We did have one, and need now to unpause the game. The problem is that the Italia guy never connect to the game !
So the Italia is the only one to not unpause the game, but as (I think) he will never come back anyway, we are froze for ever !
What shall we do ? =O

I'm thoroughly enjoying the warrior bards press, and since those who can't do become critics, well, I thought I'd create a place for all of us watching to provide commentary, criticism and bravos - on the poetry, not on the strategy!
