Do messages to players in Ended Games get seen?
With the ending of No Fleet Builds 1, I'd like to start 2, but password protected and only give out the password to legit players from 1 to invite trusted players. Since the game ended, if I send a message to France and Turkey, will they still get it?

Update on Game: No Fleet Builds 1
Game #4930

Sadly, it looks as though our interesting idea has gone askew, as Russia conveniently "forgot" that there were to be no fleet builds in Autumn 1903, England followed in Autumn 1904, and Russia building ANOTHER fleet. France was forced to respond with a fleet build in Autumn 1905 and now all bets are off despite best efforts.

Pause Game Request
I'm going to be away (unavoidable) for 48 hours, beginning about 36 hours from now. I have someone to cover my games, both on here and on Facebook phpDiplomacy, but they can only get only once or possibly twice per day. They will not be able to cover the 10-hour game Toaster Strudel - http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5017

I hate to leave games with unordered moves or in CD, as it ruins it for everyone else, but this was unexpected and can't be avoided. Please could this game be paused for 48 hours, beginning sometime around Friday afternoon (GMT)?

Very grateful if this is possible. I've seen games paused on Facebook phpDiplomacy, so hopefully...

Confusion about Civil Disorder
Regarding the game at:

http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4826

Russia is in civil disorder. They have moves they COULD make, but they apparenlty have no options, as there's no check or X next to their name.

France, on the other hand, hasn't done anything for a couple turns, but is still apparently able to make moves.

How does civil disorder work? Can you break out of it once entered? How many turns of doing nothing does it take to enter CD? Does logging in reset the timer, or does making moves reset it?

Thanks,

Rick

Forum sub-division idea
I'm not sure if this is possible, but I was thinking... What if for forum subdivisions we just divided it up like your game tabs are divided up?

To explain: when you click the Games link, and you see at the top "Your games," "Joinable," "Active," and "Finished." In my proposal, when you clicked the Forum link you'd see "General," "Draw Requests," "Meta/Multi Suspicions," "Rule Clarifications."

I'm not too familiar with PHP programming, but it seems like we already have the outline in place (the Games link) and the primary Games pages could just be replaced with a blank Forum page. Sure, you have to post in the one you want to use, but that's no different from a typical sub-divided forum.

I'll take a look at the code and see if I can't figure this one out myself. But if there's anyone out there that can see where I'm going with this, and already knows PHP, maybe they could contribute... :-)

Multiple accounts - 'Owned'
Led Julio and Aero are obvious multi-accounts, meta-gamers, or whatever you want to call them.

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5074

Have a look at their previous games:

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4327 http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4609
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4347

I tried to handle it in-game and start an alliance with the other four powers, but unfortunately Germany and Austria immediately went CD, while Turkey and Russia never responded. In a fit of frustration/just for laughs, I created a second and third account of my own ("Tolstoy2" and Tolstoy3") and have taken over Germany and Austria to even out the odds. I would be interested in hearing from the community if this would be an acceptable way to combat this problem, or if I just ought to let T2 and T3 go CD as well and write the game off, points-wise, as a Cost of Doing Business.

Realpolitik & real-time diplomacy in Georgia
If someone wants to follow a real high-league diplomacy & circus that could be arranged to organize a masquerade covering up invasion to an another country, then You should take a look what currently happens in Georgia.

I have to admit that Russian politicians are amazing (on top of the others are obviously Medvedev and Putin) . There was incredible interview organized to western media yesterday, where 'confused' president Medvedev asked questions from the representative of government (Putin; actually it looked more like Putin had talked to the mirror), what the heck is going on 'near Georgia'. Medvedev looked very 'uninformed' and 'compassionate' to the victimized Russian citizens in Ossetia during this interview. Then Putin 'explained' (publicly) to Medvedev that these are bad bad Georgians who are committing genocide amongst the 'Ossetian pensioners' - Putin witnessed himself 'crying old ladies' who had lost their children in the attacks 'of evil empire of Georgia'. And after all, these are only few hundred 'defenseless Ossetian rebels' (flying around with new SU-27's and bombing Georgian civilian targets) whom Georgian army is persecuting.

This was really something. Tons of new lessons about diplomacy...

I've been following it and I have to say I don't get it. I must be missing some history because I don't see why Russia would be so keen to help Ossetian separatists when they control North Ossetia
Treefarn (6094 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
Regardless, it would appear that Georgia overplayed their hand. Russia has been supporting separatists in South Ossetia AND Abkhazia, so I 'm not sure why Georgia would think that Russia would stand back and watch Georgia invade South Ossetia (even though it is admittedly their own territory). Regardless of the right and wrong of the situation, Georgia miscalculated badly.
Darwyn (1601 D)

Interesting Russian diplomacy tactic indeed. To juxtapose US diplomatic actions...complete disaster and embarassment!

There are numerous reports of US and Israeli soldiers/mercenaries taking part in this conflict on the side of Georgia. They have been training and funding the Georgian army for quite some time...so it seems this particular conflict had been planned for well in advance.

It's interesting to note that Georgia lies directly between Russia and Iran...meanwhile, two more American strike groups head for Iran. hmmm...
Treefarn (6094 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
As to why Russia would support them, I was baffled also. In that area of the world, Chechnya and a few other 'autonomous' regions are fighting for independence from Russia. If Russia doesn't respect soverignity of Georgia....
Darwyn (1601 D)

"Georgia miscalculated badly"

No, their US and Israeli counterparts miscalculated badly. Georgia's mistake was listening to them.

it is one people, ossetians, who wants to live in one state, russia :-) genocide was done by georgians and they no longer deserve the territory, ie. the borders doesn't matter. isn't this what the west is preaching for in case of kosovo?

Wouldn't surprise me, but I'm not trying to point fingers here.

Though I should clarify that I had meant, between what Georgia is saying to the media and what Russia is saying to the media, at least one of them is lying through their teeth.

The BBC does state that more than half of South Ossetian citizens do hold Russian passports - Medyedev (sp?) claims that its more than 90%. I naturally trust the BBC more here.

I wonder what the South Ossetians would decide if it was put up to a vote. From the cold hard facts that are given I'm definitely thinking that the majority of them would prefer to be separated from Georgia.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that both are lying here - With many of Georgia's statements outright lies and most of Russia's lies being extremities of the truth. Completely based on my opinion and interpretations though of course.
Archonix (246 D)

*Medvedev - stupid mistake there.
McCain (100 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
Shame on Georgia..for wanting to assert control over its own territory! Comparing this to Kosovo, especially for those on the Russian side, is frankly ridiculous. What Georgia is doing is in no way analogous to what Milosevic did, and South Ossetia trying to become its own independent nation has to be someone's idea of a bad joke.
Treefarn (6094 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
How is Serbia invading Kosovo different from Georgia invading S Ossetia?
McCain (100 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
Because for one, they had entirely different aims, and also because Kosovo is a potentially viable nation-state and S Ossetia is just a front for Putin to gain more power in the Caucasus.
Treefarn (6094 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
So in your previous post, Russia is now saying they are like Nato, jumping in to defend the hapless South Ossetias but you say since S Ossetia is not viable, its a joke comparison.

And what Georgia did had a different aim then Serbia wanting to retain control of Kosovo??? What is the aim?
Ed Poon (100 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
The S. Ossetian rebels are funded by Russia. So, the rebels poke and poke and poke until the Georgians are forced to react. Once they do it gives Russia the "in" to steamroller through Georgia and take over. Pretty simple strategy really.

It may be similar to Serbia-Kosovo, but Russia is playing the part of Serbia.
Ed Poon (100 D)

Probably closer to what Hugo Chavez was doing with FARC in Columbia.
Centurian (3257 D)

Russia can pretty much do what it likes. Georgia is going to go through a bit of a leadership change
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
Kosovo is no more viable than Osetia - both have no economy. It is a good example (80% of Kosovo's GDP comes from trafficking of people/drugs/arms.
As much as I dislike Russia's international moves it was Georgia who messed up here. Osetia was under UN protection (mostly Russia troops) and it was Georgia that attacked.
The problem is that now Russia feels in a good position - and they behave in wars as if it was WWII - total disregard for civilian casualties, etc.
Darwyn (1601 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
Ed, I think are close...you definitely have the deeper context in mind that the others are lacking, except you are forgetting that US and Israel has been funding and training Georgia for some time now. These are the same countries who are desperate to invade Iran, which coincidentally, sits next to Georgia as a Russian buffer.

Cui bono? Who benefits from this conflict? Why now?
Darwyn (1601 D)
12 Aug 08 UTC
In another report, a woman interviewed by Russia Today in Tsknivali, South Ossetia, talked about the presence of Georgian troops with American insignias. “There are lots of bodies over there, a lot of people have been killed, mostly Ossetians, but also Georgians, they had American emblems on their forearms and they were in black uniforms,” she said.
Darwyn (1601 D)

The Israeli web site Debkafiles which is believed to have close links with the regime's intelligence and military sources, reported that last year, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili had commissioned from Israeli security firms up to 1,000 military advisers to train the country's armed forces.

According to the report, the Israeli advisors also helped Tbilisi with military intelligence and security operations. Georgia also purchased weapons, intelligence and electronic warfare systems from Israel.

The report added the Israeli advisers were deeply involved in the Georgian army's preparations to attack and capture the capital of South Ossetia on Friday.
