New game: "And I think to myself... what a wonderful world"
75 point buy-in per player, and slightly relaxed timing (28 hours per phase). Nice, easy game, though not without the tiniest bit of excitement.

Opening Theory: Italy and the Key
Has anyone actually ever made the Key work? I know it should be devastating to see an Italian army in Serbia, and an Austrian in Rumania, but the Italian backstab (A Tri H) happens too often, and that always seems to result in an R/T steamroller flattening Italy (and often Germany too).

Draw Request - "Sharpies get me high"
Kestas, could you please draw this game? http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4321

After a long struggle, we have reached a stalemate, and we all agree that a draw is the right solution. I am Germany. Russia, Italy and Turkey should confirm shortly.

Thanks,

Severely punished for unavoidable temporary civil disorder
I overcame a terrible start in http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4330 to get to 14 centres and an overwhelming advantage over the rest of the board. The game was originally a team game with Eng-Ger-Aus versus Fra-Ita versus Tur-Rus. Russia and I had 16 centres between us, far more than any other team, and it was just a case of finishing up.

I'd expected the game to finish a little faster than it did, but I had to leave for a music festival before it was complete. I arranged for my dad to cover all 4 of my games (I was already dead in the 5th), but he had a problem with the internet connection and could only submit orders on some days.

This led to me going CD in this game (Borf is Winning - http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4330), at which point Feckless Clod took over, submitted the final year's move and claimed the victory. I get nothing; he gets about 250-300 points for the win.

This current scoring system really needs to be fixed. There should be penalties for going CD in some games and not others, but you should not have a long-fought victory stolen out from under your nose if you can;t avoid a short absence.

Voice to voice game?
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in running a game using a voice chat program, such as ventrilo, to play something akin to face-to-face diplomacy? I don't know if i will be able to devote a large enough chunk of time to playing this quite yet, but i'm just pitching the idea in case anyone else would like to give it a shot.

Kestas, can I bother you?
I am playing in a Global Press only game, and it seems to be a very rich, lively game. However, the Global Press tab gets filled very quickly, and if one person is away for, say, 15 or 20 hours they may miss(and have missed!) dialogue between the other players, often concerning their own country.(Looking at you, Russia, in the current game!)

Anyways, would it be terribly difficult to increase the amount of Press seen by the players in the Global Tab dialogue box? Maybe, and I'm just thinking out loud here, but would it be possible to organize it so that messages are deleted not by how many messages are there, but by how long the message has been there? Like, say, messages posted in the Global tab would only be deleted after a day or two? I have no idea if this is even possible, but I thought I'd ask, cause it does hurt the gameplay of Global Press Only games... Thanks in advance!

How many games is too many?
How many games of Diplomacy do you normally involve yourself in at one time? I've found that four is about enough for me, at least at the moment. One is no press, one is open press, one I joined late, and the last is a normal game. I suspect that four normal games might really start to pile up a bit... :-) What're your opinions?

New Feature = Hours of Phase???
The number of hours allowed for players to discuss and enter orders each phase (between 1 and 72 hours).
Longer phase hours means more time to make careful decisions and negotiations, but makes a game take longer. Shorter phase hours results in a faster game, but requires that players in the game are available to check the game frequently.

No Press Games
I have seen people playing no press games. When played here on phpdiplomacy, there is no way to enforce it, so it is not that common, but for many of the other judges, no press games seem to be a very big part of the games played.
Why are these games so popular? Why do people want to play Diplomacy without diplomacy?
I hope somebody here can explain me the fascination of it.
To me, it still sounds like guessing moves, rather than real Diplomacy.

Tired of 'stone age' players
I don't know if it is just me or if this place is changing, but since I returned from my monthly break, I've been bumping into what I would call 'stone age' players. I don't know if it is possible to describe it, but I'll list a few common characteristics:

1- Almost never talks or replies to messages.
2- When they do it is never longer than once sentence, and often (unintentionally) cryptic.. that is, it doesn't make, often due to bad english - I'll give examples
3- Often behave emotionally - attack you just to get at you or get revenge while letting another player that didn't 'mess with them' win
4- Which often leads to what we call 'kamikaze' situations..
5- Extremely short term thinking - the mentality goes like 'I'll attack you and get a single SC then have a stalemate forever while everyone keeps growing lololol'
6- Bad allies. We agree on moves and they just do whatever they think is better, which leads to doom of both parties of the alliance - I'm not talking about stabs, I'm talking about saying yes yes and doing your own stupid moves instead, then repeating the same.

Examples of messages in point 2:

KILL X KILL X KILL X KILL X
Y will win. we must ally
fleet in Z bad, die
DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
liar!!!
(after asking why he supported X into your territory) "just fixing weak pts"
and of course when I retaliate.. "You make me desperate to destroy you" "Good boys dont move to X"

I am already sick of playing games dominated by this kind of players, that is, 1 or 2 is fine, but when 5 of the 7 players on the board are like that.. Ugh. How can I escape?

I couldn't agree more...seems like a lot of players are playing too many games superficially or without great attention, and their messages reflect it.
Chrispminis (916 D)
20 Jul 08 UTC
You have the resources to play in games lacking such players. =D

I have a feeling such players probably have a competitive disadvantage in playing Diplomacy...

Otherwise, you'll have to play while taking their "stone age" personalities in stride. If they're easy to finger, they're easy to predict.

When there's something wrong with everyone else on the board, perhaps it's you. =D
anlari (8640 D)
20 Jul 08 UTC
I don't want to throw in 500+ points to each game, considering any decent competition here is quite decent :P

Taking the personalities in stride works, but the unreasonable behaviour is quite erratic... it is not nearly as fun as everyone behaving as true diplomats..

Touché. Though I think I've played enough games to realize who the problem is with.

I'll probably start playing password protected games and handpick the players, or variants...
Chrispminis (916 D)
20 Jul 08 UTC
Yeah, I know what you mean by decent competition... Before I started almost exclusively playing Mastermind+ games (remember those? =D), tournaments, and league games, my win ratio was almost twice what it is now.

As a rational player, I feel your pain. There's nothing scarier than being faced with someone who truly seems irrational. It's the evolutionary incentive for anger as an emotion.

If it's any consolation, I find that irrational newbies are much easier to stab, though they react quite violently. You can always fall back on your superior tactical skill yes?
garistarch (201 D)
20 Jul 08 UTC
since i've only played one full game on this site so far, i'm tempted to just respond with "KILL X KILL X KILL X"

but i do want to offer some hope to you all with much more experience and many more points... there are some newbies out there who obsess about their games and rely on good allies and diplomacy to get further along.

in fact anlari, i'm about to enjoy some good mindgames with you in that upcoming No Press Game...

I'm fairly new to the site, but I have to say so far nearly everyone I've talked to has been mature, clear and seemingly intelligent. Maybe I've just been lucky?

Also, in one of my first games I picked up a CD country and my initial communication was pretty close to what anlari describes above, in an attempt to get the targeted player to assume I was a complete moron and underestimate me. I've also had someone try this on me recently in a similar situation. It didn't seem to work in either case, but could some of the behaviour anlari describes be the same sort of thing?

"2- When they do it is never longer than once sentence, and often (unintentionally) cryptic.. that is, it doesn't make, often due to bad english - I'll give examples"

Was I the only one that noticed the irony in this statement? :-P

On point 3: is this really a bad thing? Granted, it's not a winning technique, and it's a rather juvenile attitude, but sometimes it's fun to "be emotional." I rather like this post.

In the one game I'm in, Russia was a DNS, so Turkey got off to a quick (and unbeatable start). When I accused Italy of helping Turkey, he was outraged... his units were simply fleeing the Turkish advance, he said. Like what good is rapid flight? Dip isn't R/L and you gain nothing by rapid flight. If you want to hinder an advance, you advance...

anlari, i haven't come across anything like that yet. but i have found the lower level pot games to be rougher and have a certain dog eat dog mentality. alliances are made and broken overnight and accusations of anything fly around. its fun...but i prefer the seriousness of playing more mature (not necessary older - see any of mapleleaf's threads!) players.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
21 Jul 08 UTC
Anlari, when i have as many points as you i'm going to be throwing nothing less than (i'd say) 250 point at every game, (if i can find the competition) My current favourite game is the 4004 point pot which has been soo much better due to the great competition and the tense game bacuase it's a lot of points for anyone to win.

I don't see 500 points on a game as being thrown away, if the competition is steep, and the game is harder then it's worth risking the points for a really good game of dip.

my two cent.

- Kamikaze threats and moves are a legitimate strategy
- Unfortunatly we can't punish bad play, poor logic, or stabs for whatever reason they may occur (unless it's emnity originating from a different game... an entirely different issue)

I think the best you can do is what other have been suggesting: play higher pot games, and be more selective about who is and isn't in games with you

and, lol, speak for yourself Gobbledydook :-P

Kamikaze threats and moves are a legitimate strategy when they're a strategy - That is, when there's an element of bluff and you actually try to further your position with that..

NOT when you use all of your units to attack the single guy that is trying to make peace with you while 2 other players are getting your undefended centres :P

In any case, I think I won't go below 200 from now.

Point 2 should have been 'it doesn't make sense' , but I lay claim to the irony even though it was unintentional :P

Behaving emotionally is the antithesis of diplomacy, in my opinion.

I'm in a game now where everyone bar italy is 'stone age'. Although when I questioned France about it he said "maybe they are silent players with a clos nit stratagy"...
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
21 Jul 08 UTC
Anlari, this is part of the reason why we tried to set up a league - guaranteed games against some good players.

I have to say I have found the same thing as you. The 'if you stab me you die whilst everyone else hoovers up my centres' strategy is a bit strange, but worse is the lack of any discussion. It makes the game rather depressing.

I would offer you a game, but I am about to go on holiday. I do, however, need a sitter for a game or two for four or five days from Thursday. Would you be available?

Anlari, your findings are mine. I spent a huge amont on Revelstone, 500 points, and lost them all, but am glad I did so simply because it was such a great game.

However, now I have just 250 points to play with, so cannot do it again. That is why I dislike the point system, you can loose one game and so loose everything, and I would rate myself higher than my points suggest (alamothe places me as roughly equal to him in skill, but look at the points gap). Other under-rated players imo include llama, flashman and cgwhite.
anlari (8640 D)
21 Jul 08 UTC
Alamothe is himself underrated. I'd probably place him equal to, if not above, myself. Sneaky bastard :)
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
21 Jul 08 UTC
That's very kind of you Ghostie, and entirely undeserved. Marek P, Braveheart and sean ought to be included in that list too.

Anlari, when I get back, we can compile a list of these players and I can challenge you to a game. I haven't really played you that much yet...
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
21 Jul 08 UTC
Well, Marek I rate as the best player here (flashman, the sneaky bugger, has him as a sitter...). I remain to be impressed by his fantastic ability to corner somebody into allying with him. I personally do not put much stock by rating differences above 1-2000 points. Braveheart I have only played two games with, and in those he has made mistakes (misjudging the league system's effects).

I agree with the comment on alamothe being a sneaky bastard...
