from the first time news of the dossier appeared it was referenced that it was financed by democrats, possibly the DNC or the Clinton campaign. this has been confirmed. the question shouldn't be who paid for the research to be compiled....it should be is the research correct -- if it is it doesn't matter who paid for the information.

Opposition research isn't illegal, but really we don't know the true merits to this. We don't know how far this goes. For all we know illegal activities were conducted in connection to the fake dossier. We do know that the Clinton campaign/DNC paid for some nutter to make up a bunch of lies then they used it as the basis of the Trump ROFL Russia collusion BS story.

However, this Uranium 1 story is totally different. There is clear evidence that illegal actions were done in connection to this. So, someone is going to prison over that.

Also, don't forget that Mueller isn't even investigating Trump anymore. Recent reports are that he is now investigating the Podesta Group for their ties to Russia and the Clinton Campaign and how they relate to Manafort. Oops! The dossier has been largely confirmed where it can be and there is zero unconstitutional about unmasking, but you'd have to know something about the constitution to know that. Unmasking is no more unsconstitutional than searching your car when you've left a bag of cocaine sitting in the back seat
