Balance in Modern Variant
I just got back into diplomacy after a two year hiatus and looking back at my old games I've noticed that the modern variant has big differences in skill required to be successful between countries. So I ask, has anyone been successful with Ukraine or Egypt?

Just as it says in the subject line. I've been tasked with helping set up the biggest point game in webDiplomacy History. Probably in part because it's way above my number of points so I'm beneath taking part myself.

Fiscal Conservatives should be against providing Disaster Relief to Texans
Its their fualt for living along a coast. We should shut down the government, and not spend taxpayer dollars helping rebuild homes for people who built in high risk areas. Disaster Relief shouldnt be political. So lets deny everyone aid, regardless of that states political leanings. PS I dont believe what Im.saying just fyi

I think Hurricane Harvey is a Chinese hoax. Scientists don't agree whether there is such a thing. It's all fake news. Since it isn't happening taxpayers don't need to pay for it.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

As much as I hate Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, this hurricane is set to dump upwards of 50 inches of rain in certain places according to the latest models, which would be the most ever by any tropical storm or hurricane, and around a foot in San Antonio and Houston. It will be absolutely destructive. The whole coastline of Texas is prone to floods enough as is. I could see this ending up Sandy- or Katrina-esque, especially given that people didn't have the advance notice necessary to prepare a proper evacuation. I don't care what you believe or what you have said in the past, or what others have done in the past to you - if providing aid in this case is even a question, you're a joke of a human being without even the most basic comprehension of how dangerous Gulf storms can be, and while it's easy to call them hypocrites, it's dumb to act as if they are somehow making the wrong choice.

It is a conundrum to provide aid, which we will of course, to those who would deny it to others to help them to deal with a disaster they helped make worse by preventing action. One can understand the duty to help at the same time recognizing they're getting hammered by something they unleashed on everyone.

@ND, how can we not politicize this? We (liberals and scientists) have been saying that more extreme weather events are the most likely result of global warming. And you (conservatives and science-deniers) have been politicizing it.

The cost of global warming, to the economy, will be paid out in events like this one.
brainbomb (290 D)
25 Aug 17 UTC
I believe I was argiung that politics should never have any place in situations like this. That regardless of beliefs disaster relief is a universal necessity whether you are a fiscal conservative, a staunch libertarian, there is no political affiliation which can morally justify shutting down our government in a time of absolute crisis for millions of families.
brainbomb (290 D)
25 Aug 17 UTC
I wasnt joking. Being cynical about people saying government intervention and agencies like fema are counter to our national interest are people who should be weighing in here. Of course nobody is going to popularly claim texas deserves this. Nobody with a functioning brain celll would win an argument that texas is undeserving of aid.

But your responses thus far have all been pretty intetresting
goldfinger0303 (3157 DMod)

This is the first major hurricane in a decade to hit the area. That's a historical anomaly. If anything, this is just a return to the norm. And it's dumping rain not because it's a massive storm, but because it will be wedged in between two high pressure regions and will just sit over Texas for five days.

Also, fortunately everyone who has a home mortgage in the area is probably safe. If a home is in a 100 year flood zone, then it *must* have flood insurance. These people won't be out much money, provided they protected some of their belongings, and even then they usually come with $50k content coverage. Any business that has a loan will be similarly covered. You can thank the banking industry for that.

The real aid relief is for fixing infrastructure and helping those who don't have flood insurance on their house. Those who don't are dumb, but it's understandable since it's really, really expensive to maintain.

But in sum: Don't politicize this, you assholes.
goldfinger0303 (3157 DMod)

Well, technically thank the government for doing flood surveys, providing some of the insurance, and passing a bill that force places flood insurance.

I dont know who you all think yer scoring points with. You keep making posts like its rude to politicize a natural disaster.

So im gonna keep asking until someone has the bravery to answer.

Why is the President suggesting a government shutdown in the midst of the worst disaster in over a decade.

Doesnt a shutdown include disaster relief?

Is FEMA not a government agency?

If the govt is shut down how does texas get disaster aid.

If you say we shouldnt politicize a disaster, then are you argiung for the shutdown? Or against it.

Thoughts

Hurricanes are a natural event. It has nothing to do with global warming and there probably won't be another major one for 5-10 years (normal) but ultra-leftists and paid hacks (climate scientists) will politicize it. Don't buy into it. It's not global warming. Global warming is a myth, made up fantasy.

Are you denying climate change ? Or that is manmade.

I mean there is really no dispute that the planet is getting warmer... obviously the cause is political and theres a debate but... theres no right wing or left wing on science... its fact. The poles are melting. Like we have evidence and proof the poles are melting and are raising sea levels... we have proof the oceans are full of trash and are losing oxygen. We have proof that sea temperatures are warmer than they used to be causing bigger nastier storms with greater damage..

Regarding disaster relief programs:

This is pretty essential stuff for government, and has been for a long ass time. The only people I think you'll find who disagree with the idea there shouldn't be government disaster relief programs and agencies also don't believe government should exist in the first place.

Regarding climate change:

Yes it's real. Anyone who claims otherwise is either shilling for the dying oil industry or has fallen for the lies of those who are.
ND (879 D)

Global Warming, Global Cooling, Climate Change, whatever you want to call it is just a hoax designed to redistribute wealth from the US to the rest of the world. It's a sham, hoax, made up, scheme. Unfortunately, people are silly and buy into it.

There is some natural climate change that occurs over periods of thousands, tens of thousands of years, millions of years because Earth has seasons and goes through periods of change, but man has absolutely nothing to do with that.
brainbomb (290 D)

Where are you getting these notions? Like what data has disproven that the earth is warming?
TrPrado (461 D)

I mean, hell, Jim Bridenstine, major Tea Party Republican and definite space nerd (and soon to be head of NASA) has come full force on accepting that it's happening and the imminent dangers it will cause. An Oklahoma Tea Party Republican accepting it is headline-worthy.

On second thought im just gonna mute my iwn thread.

Climate change denial is a step below holocaust denial and theres really nothing much to say beyond that
ND (879 D)
26 Aug 17 UTC
I mean, just look up East Anglia University and the climate change email scandal. Look up about how UVA researchers were caught fabricating research to get more gov't grant money. It's fairly obvious that whoever can come up with a bigger 'climate change' scenario will receive more grant money. Look up how all carbon tax is just a redistribution scheme. It's all just a hoax man.
TrPrado (461 D)

Based on the climate of Oklahoma, what sort of weather patterns would you expect for this time of year?
