Dr Who and Gender recognition
http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/07/17/doctor-who-we-regret-to-inform-you-that-you-are-still-legally-a-man/
I know this is mostly meant to be fun (and a serious look at gender recognition laws in the uk) but i make me question one thing.

Is the spousal veto a necessary thing? From a purely contractual perspective. Can't you go 'well if your spouse isn't happy with your new gender, then they will have to apply for divorce.' ??? Thoughts?

Exxon fined for violating Russia sanctions
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-exxon-mobil-usa-ukraine-idUSKBN1A51UH

The Department of the Treasury just fined Exxon $2 million (that's right, million with an "M") for violating sanctions related to Russia's involvement in Ukraine. Why should Russia care about lifting sanctions if toothless enforcement is the alternative?

[STRATEGY] Ancient Med Variant
Hello everyone. I love the idea of the 5 player variant. But searching online I am unable to find strategy guides for EACH individual nation. It also seems Carthage has a good advantage over the others. Also Rome is just as bad as Italy in classic. Anyone have input?

Do Republicans think that Russia is good or bad?
There seems to be debate on the right about whether Russia is to be trusted or not. (The left is uniformly suspicious of Russia). I'm seeing Republican lawmakers being skeptical about Russia, but rightwing media seems fine with them.

@CAPT

I disagree, I don't think Trump personally is going to submit to Putin, but there are quite a few Republicans who at least see Russia with disinterest, and at most enjoy their meddling.

Russia isn't a massive economic powerhouse, but they've been so aggressive on foreign policy, nobody in the States should consider them an ally
user1981 (607 D)

@ Capt Unfortunately, Russia is not flirting with the return of communism, quite the contrary, the state no longer funds healthcare, education, pensions

And CAPT Brad has no business telling anyone what the left believes. He has no idea. He just believes he knows what the left believes which conveniently allows him to demonizing people because he really has no clue.

interestingly enough, I can't remember the last time I saw the member of a right waving the soviet flag though. but i guess that was over 20 years ago when they fell. is it better to support the communist regime of the past (with no current political power in office) or to support the Putin regime of the present (with all of his current influence)

I think I'll go with neither

Last night I saw a nice clip from OneAmerica News. It reminded us viewers that Russia suffered Muslim extremism in 2006 in the Belsan school siege where so many people died due to terrorism. The end of the clip talked about how America stands with Russia and its fight against terrorism. Not sure why they needed to go back 11 years to find something that put Russia in a good light but it certainly would persuade a passive viewer to see Russia as more of an ally.

Why would right wing media organisations have any problems with a Russia "run" by modern day "robber Barons"/ oligarchs ? The world's capitalist elite are " trans Nationals" their loyalties are to wealth and power, not to any particular nation States.. their strategy is to divide Nation States and prevent them from doing anything collectively that might limit their lower, make them pay taxes they currently avoid, etc.

I don't really have any issues with Russia. None of the "Russia election meddling" stuff is provable and there is no evidence to support it. The whole "17 intelligence agency" thing was really just 3 intelligence agencies led by Clapper, an Obama appointee. People have proved he lied to everyone about Project Prism (Snowden revelations). Also part of it was spun up by the fake Trump dossier so it's all built on a hoax.

This Don Jr. thing was just opposition research. Every serious national and state level political major party candidate does it. So far, I have seen absolutely nothing that makes me thing that Russia did anything or Trump colluded or anything like that.

Basically this whole "russia" thing is the left's attempt at the birther movement. It's kind of sicko stuff really.

To the OP: I personally do not think Russia should be trusted, however if they are willing to work with us against ISIS, Islamic Radical Terrorism, and enter into postitive trade pacts with us then I don't see why we shouldn't work with them.

Hauta (1618 D(S))
17 Jul 17 UTC
@ND, thanks for responding to the OP! Russia hasn't done much against ISIS -- they HAVE really beaten up on non-ISIS opposition in Syria, though. Unfortunately, we like some of those guys, so Russia wasn't really helping us there (yet). Er, where else are they helping us against Islamic Radical Terrorism? Also, what trade pacts are you referring to?
ND (879 D)
17 Jul 17 UTC
Not sure, I am not designing policy. Just saying there is room for growth there both Obama and Bush tried to work out deals with Russia.

Yes the Russian issue is the dems attempt to delegitimize Trump. Last year the didn't give two toots about it. It only has legs because of that

@ND, what is it that you think that Russia wants as part of growth? And why didn't Bush/Obama give it to him?

@Brad, the OP is about Russia. Do YOU trust Russia or not? (This has nothing to do with the left's failure in the election)

I wouldn't touch the Russians with a ten-foot pole until they made major concessions, and neither should Republicans.
Zach0805 (100 D)

As a prominent conservative we don't need Russia to interfere in Syria. It seems like they only inteferred because we did. However we don't need to be strict enemies. This whole "I hate Russia" narrative is ridiculous.
CAPT Brad (40 DX)
17 Jul 17 UTC
I recall when my ship took out a Russian submarine. I was trained to look at Russia as an adversary and practiced as if they were the enemy. No I don't trust Russia. No one should. I do understand their paranoia.
Ogion (3882 D)
17 Jul 17 UTC
It's only ridiculous if you don't believe in things like human rights, democracy or international law. Sure, Russia moved in Syria to back up a vicious dictatorship that tortures and executes people in large enough numbers to need a big crematorium associated with their biggest prison and that uses chemical weapons on civilians. Of course, if you're a conservative, then Russia's rampant imperialism, scorn for democracy, and criminalization of being gay is perfectly in line with your values.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
17 Jul 17 UTC
@user1981: "It is not what he said - lip service basically, but how voted"

Sanders has been very consistent about sanctions against Russia. He has also been consistent about maintaining the spirit of the Iran nuclear agreement. Republicans could have addressed these issues in separate bills, but they knew Democrats would oppose the Iran sanctions so they poisoned pure legislation to pass it.

Sanders stood for his principles recognizing that non-proliferation in Iran is more important, so he was one of 2 senators to vote "Nay" and send a message. That's a real thing, not lip service.
Any conservative buddying up to Russia is not a true conservative. They are not to be trusted, and will be America's chief adversary for the foreseeable future. It didn't have to turn out this way, but past decisions (read: Clinton's decisions) have made cooperation with the current regime almost impossible.
user1981 (607 D)
17 Jul 17 UTC
@ Jeff - might well be as hard to distinguish merged vote on two countries, my feeling though was that Sanders is a Comintern sleeping agent ))

End Russia Sanctions Now?
Tillerson has already said wrt the election meddling that it is time to move forward. Why not go all out and just get rid of sanctions altogether? At the least, couldn't Trump just turn a blind eye to violations of the sanctions (Magnitsky Act) and return the 2 spy compounds? Who's gonna stop him?
