Dr Who and Gender recognition
http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/07/17/doctor-who-we-regret-to-inform-you-that-you-are-still-legally-a-man/
I know this is mostly meant to be fun (and a serious look at gender recognition laws in the uk) but i make me question one thing.

Is the spousal veto a necessary thing? From a purely contractual perspective. Can't you go 'well if your spouse isn't happy with your new gender, then they will have to apply for divorce.' ??? Thoughts?

What to do as Italy in gunboat?
option A: plow into Austria
option B: ally with Austria and go after Turkey.
option C: attack France.

option A: plow into Austria
Best outcome: You get the lion's share of Austria's centers and Russia does not succumb to standard English northern center grabbing, and you Russia and Turkey get locked up in a neverending struggle until either France or Germany win the West. If France wins, you die soon after, then France solos. If Germany wins, Russia dies soon after, giving Turkey enough strength such that you will never dig them out. Germany maybe solos, or 3-way draw happens.

Usual outcome: You split Austrian centers with Turkey and Russia. Russia succumbs to Turkey because of weakness due to English attacks in North. Turkey destroys you. Three-way between Turkey and 2 of E-F-G.

option B: Ally with Austria and go after Turkey.
best outcome: you actually get a couple of centers off of Turkey before Austria gets a build in a year that you don't, stabs you for Venice, then you proceed to slowly get killed.
worst outcome: you get no centers from Turkey, and Austria finally tires of your obedience and takes all your centers.

option C: attack France.
best outcome: England attacks France early, which allows Russia to not totally keel over, which keeps Turkey honest, which allows Austria to stay alive, but not gain anything. England's attack on France allows you to actually make gains in France, after which you can work on growing at the expense of whomever is weakest in the East.
worst outcome: France is not attacked strongly by anyone in West so is easily able to rebuff your weak advances. You stay at 4 forever until someone wins in East (or France wins in West) and runs over you.

So mulling all these options over, I say C! Attack France (would be tie with A, but C wins out because attacking Austria is so normal)

What do you think?

Never plow into Austria as Italy unless you are damn sure that you have an IT going

Attacking France is usually the best option: here's the most recent Italy gb I've played where Italy attacked France:

Keep in mind these are pretty high level gb games. So results may vary for the run of the mill game. Austria can usually stall Italy out of their centers long enough to get Turkey into the Ionian, after which Italy is just screwed.

This is a more recent game Italy waits a couple of years to stab. This seems to be a good strategy too, but again, if Austria sees it coming, you're in a lot of trouble

I've definitely noticed a trend lately of Italy attacking Austria early, especially in gunboat. I think the temptation is an easy center grab without any long term plan. In my recent sampling, Turkey was never eliminated when Italy attacked Austria early. The only game where Turkey was eliminated came with an I/A alliance. Of course, I happened to be Turkey, so don't draw any conclusions.

plan C
Ven-Pie, Rom-Ven, Nap-Ion

If you are brave you can leave Venice open (Rom-Tus?) to allow Austria concentrate on East. But a common Austrian opening is Tri-Ven, in which case you will probably be dead (especially if you open Rom -Tus! :) ).

Ven-Pie, Rom-Tus, Nap-Ion is fine against Tri-Ven (provided no Vie-Ven).

There just seems to be no upside to allying with Austria vs Turkey. If you actually d destroy Turkey, then Austria will likely be the stronger partner and will kill you. You are so vulnerable with at most one army guarding the homeland.
And the best Turkey strategy in that case is to cede centers to Austria while allowing no progress to Italy at all.

really cspieker? the italian austrian alliance can work fine. granted this most recent iteration wasn't gunboat.... gameID=197264

I agree allying with Austria can be good in full-press, but in gunboat
1) it is *really* hard to kill Turkey
2) Russia is almost always weak, which means, it's harder to kill Turkey, and then if you do, Austria will be super strong and probably kill you because Russia is non-existent.

fair enough -- i am always nervous about austria as italy when i do this, even with full press.

I have a good track record as Italy in gunboat games, especially high level games. E.g.,:
gameID=198975
gameID=193232

Based on Italy being my favorite power and my good track record, I STRONGLY urge against attacking Austria in 1901. I think it's a suicide mission unless you somehow outplay Austria - and you have no way of knowing if Austria is a strong player or not before anyone has made any damn moves.

Yoyo also referenced once of the games I just linked where I went with a plan you did not list in your 3 choices, so I am going to put this out there:

Plan D: SNEAK ATTACK on Austria.
With this plan, you make all your moves plausibly consistent with an alliance to Austria. However, you do not move Venice (just support austria needlessly). Once you have Austria's trust, attack with Trieste and convoy into Albania or Greece.

This gameplan is much stronger than options A and B:
1. Your moves are consistent with attacking Turkey at the beginning - which means, if the conditions look favorable to attack Turkey (or unfavorable for attacking Austria e.g, he left the fleet in Trieste), you can just decide to attack Turkey instead of Austria.
2. If Austria takes the bait, he will move all his units against Turkey and probably Russia. Thus, Russia and Turkey do not profit very much from your attack and the Austrian home centers are more likely to become yours.
3. Most Austrian players are praying to god that you don't attack them, and it is very easy for them to convince themselves that you are going to help them, because it is easier to believe good news than bad news.

I'm with swordsman - in GB you need to damage or stunt Turkey significantly before stabbing Austria - an early stab simply guarantees a loss for you both.
You can only safely stab Austria if Russia and Turkey are fighting. Otherwise you're signing your own death warrant.

Lepanto seems like a fool's errand most of the time. Almost never works, and trying it usually benefits Austria more than Italy.

Attacking France is the most fun since it's usually not expected. And honestly, screw France. It's like the easiest nation to play in gunboats.
Indeed, one of the sweater things in Diplomacy is to paint Marseille, Spain and Portugal in green. Although, I recommend looking first if France is not a good player. If he doesn't show signs of a bad player in a first couple of years, then you should try to find your luck back east. "Poor little Italy, stuck in between". :-)
Maybe the only thing that keeps Classic map from being perfect is the fact that in Venice is not a fleet, instead of an army. But, what can you do...

If Venice we a fleet the would be no bohemian crusher. That would be a tragedy
Well, not for Austria. :)
And, calling a '02, three ground army attack on Austria a "crusher" is really not adequate, since its really the least imaginative and least brave attack a player can go for.
Maybe, Bohemian pussy would be a better name. Maybe someone has a better name for it? English is not my first language.
Sorry for being rude. Just, AH is too weak. :-)

Just work backwards. If Turkey gets big, you are going to fight him eventually. A big Austria can coexist with a big Italy because Austria is never a fleet power. France and Italy never need to fight unless one of them is soloing. So you need to be preparing to fight Turkey. The best way to do that is to make peace with Austria as fast as you can and go after Turkey together, maybe with Russia's help as well. Picking up a few Turkish centers, now you have options. You can try to get up to Moscow. You can stab Austria. You can turn around and go after France. On the other hand, if you had gone after Austria right away, Turkey probably got Greece and Serbia and now is knocking at your door with nowhere else to go.

The key to playing Austria in gunboat is to realize that you're so weak, you're actually better off going back and forth between Trieste and Albania in a Morse code fashion in an attempt to send press to other countries.
Ive just looked thoroughly through my solos and loses. 14 games I lost with Austria. This Morse code idea is interesting. Any idea on improving Austrias games in gunboat - Im all ears.
