Non-Symmetrical Phase Lengths
I looked in the issue tracker and it does not appear that I can search the forum. Has there been discussion about different phase lengths for retreats and adjustments from orders? It seems like a great way to have good order negotiations while avoiding downtime for phases that don't need the additional time. This would allow something like 3 days orders and 1 day retreat/adjustment.

Am I missing something, or do people not know how to play Diplomacy anymore?
So I'm finding a trend where some countries just don't really send press even in situations where it would really help them.

For example, I've had multiple situations where an ally moves in a way that threatens me. So I ask them what's up...no response. Then the moves come out and it turns out they weren't attacking me after all.

Out of the 5 games I've played since rejoining, they've all had players who don't bother to communicate. Is this a trend, or am I playing with less experienced people, or is there some good reason not to talk to your allies that I'm missing?

I think that actual diplomacy is a skill that takes time to both learn and apply. Not everyone wants' to invest that time. I don't play any games with less than one day turns (and even a day a turn is a bit too quick).

F2F is different of course but then tournament play is totally different to PBM, PBEM or WebDip.

I don't think that gunboat games help much either. Without press, all the focus is on tactics and not on communication.
@pastoralan

I really hadn't thought of it. When I looked back I went over a month without talking to you. In that game I was focused on the attack in the north and wasn't really too worried about the Med. But yes, you are right, I didn't return press when I probably should have. Sorry.

There's always somebody who won't talk. (Usually it's Yoyo.) I did read an article that said people are nicer right before a betrayal though, so maybe being silent is a way of subconsciously building trust?
CAPT Brad (40 DX)

actually if i am talking to you it is either because i trust you and am coordinating a draw or i am sweet talking you and setting me up for a solo.

Frustrating as heck when players don't talk. There's gunboat for that, please. I just consider non-talkers to be hostile and treat them accordingly. I think if more players did that, the silent ones would get frustrated with always being attacked.

I do admit I have a difficult time keeping constant contact with those that are not my immediate neighbours. When I do remember, I try to be congratulatory on a seeming good play, or empathetic when something doesn't go right. First lesson out of School of War was to talk, and talk often. Sometimes it's nice when the "personal" gets injected in to the press. Talking is way too important though.

i also wrote a very similar post today!
yes. it is very frustrating. but looking through the responses i got, i get the sense this is beatable.
there is a way to communicate with new players. trying to talk their level. ill be trying it myself
David E. Cohen (100 D)

Tactics in Diplomacy is easy. VERY easy, compared to diplomacy (small "d") with your opponents. Tactics is also the least important of the "triad" of tactics, strategy and diplomacy, with diplomacy being by far the most important. And you can take that from a guy who was voted the top tactician in the ACD.

Brad, the game is called Diplomacy for a reason. The best players can manipulate others to do all the hard work. Sounds like you need to work on that part of your game. I know you have been playing more non-live games, so this would be a great time to develop that side of your game.
SuperMario0727 (204 D)

I thought I was the only one who took issue to this. It seems to me like a lot of players do not know how to communicate in this game. The game would be a lot more fun if players talked more often.

In FTF, it is very easy to skip a round with someone. Online with reasonable time controls, say 48 hours, there really is no excuse for not sending at least heartbeat email to every player. However, it can be a time suck to really be communicative. I have found though that the best players online communicate in volume.
Matticus13 (2844 D)

@Brad: I'd have soloed that game if it wasn't so late :'(

Isn't strategy more important than diplomacy? Maybe diplomacy can overcome bad strategy but at a certain point diplomacy loses its effectiveness.

You're probably right.

But if you don't know strategy, diplomacy can only take you so far. A board full of top players can only talked into so much. You have to know strategy and even tactics in order to sell with diplomacy.

@OP

I've found joining password invite games to be the best solution where folks are more in tune with the game all the way through and interested in talking until the final phase.

Diplomacy Strategy: Theatres of War
The Diplomacy game-board can be divided into six theatres of war, each of which is based on a historical front in the Great War. These theatres are the Western Front, Eastern Front, Italian Front, Middle Eastern Front, Balkan Front, and African Front. Each of them comprise various provinces on the game-board, and recognizing them can improve overall strategy . . .
