I'm thrilled with now 3 consecutive wins for Mad Max: Fury Road.

Merit? It's a popularity contest among over-the-hill geezers.

Ghug's right; it's just whether you interpret that some merit has been overlooked; particularly in the case of the Best Film category, where the Academy has 10 spaces for Best Film but choose to nominate just 8, rather than for example give nominations to Carol or Straight Outta Compton.

If Mad Max wins Director or Film I'll be so so thrilled.

Though Revenant's direction/vision was sublime.

Up for a lot. Leonardo is the surest lock for any category this evening.

Despite all the outcry, there is not a huge problem w/r/t black people, at least. The ones who should really be upset are Latinos and Asians.

The delicious irony, of course, is that Liberal Hollywood, one of the center points of fake Liberal/Equality activism, is in fact now the focal point of the cries of racism.

And so it is now with Hollywood. It's rather hilarious to watch, especially now that the Academy is going to "correct" the problem of racism by artificially making sure "all races" are properly represented. Again....they won't do this by merit of the work, etc, but instead will count skin color representation, and if they didn't find anyone by merit to fill a position, they'll just fill it by color to make a quota.

Question: Who here is interested in getting a position NOT based upon your actual skills and ability to fill the position, but simply because of some uncontrolled physical characteristic you were born with?

Krellin it's not a matter of skill, it's a matter of acknowledging the skill. There are tons of super talented black actors and actresses, but they just aren't given the same opportunity for roles or nominated. Why? Because they don't fit a certain image Hollywood is looking for. That's the issue here. Not talent, they obviously have that. And they can act as well if not better than their white counterparts.

There's this assumption that the broader audience would much rather see a white, young male in a lead role than anyone else. So Hollywood casts based off that assumption, and it just removes so many wonderful actors and actresses from the ability to even be represented.

No....actually it is VERY MUCH a matter of "skill", and specifically, in the case of the Oscars, it is a matter of acknowledging who displayed the BEST skill in a given year.

If you actually looked at Chaqa's link, your assertion that non-whites (specifically black) actors are not given the same opportunities, that is FLAT OUR WRONG. The data is there....read Chaqa's post.

So...in other words...you are just another ill-informed (intentionall ill-informed, I will guess) that is more interested in feigned-outrage than you are interested in actual facts, and actual equality.

I find it rather pathetic that you think black actors are not given opportunities, because in some of my favorite movies over my life, a significant number of them contain black actors and actresses in lead roles. That YOU choose to bury your head in the sand and pretend they don't get lead roles, etc, is your OWN INTENTIONAL FAILING.

there's a list of famous, POPULAR black actors that have been in leading roles in movies in recent decades. this isn't even getting into the female black actors. many of them are Oscar winners.

So where the fuck do you get off saying that Black Actors don't get good opportunities in movies.
