Hey guys, Vash here.
So about a year and a half ago obiwanobiwan made a Best Musical Act Tournament (
threadID=1167134) and I felt that after a year in a half, we have a lot of new users, and I’ve experienced a lot more music personally. I had some fun with it, so let’s try it again. As such I will GM (if you want to help me GM just PM me, I will need the help). And the before we have a tournament we need nominations. And so this will be organized, I have developed a method for doing so. Here are the rules.
CATEGORIES/GENRES:
So last time the tournament was organized by time period, with 32 entrants in each time period. But I feel it would allow us to share a more diverse cross section of music if we organized it by genre. As such, I we will nominate people in following 8 categories.genres, with 16 spots in each:
1.Classics: Basically anything before the 60s. Your Beethoven, Tschaikovsky, anything from the 20s and even Buddy Holly would be here.
2. Classic Rock: Rock from the 60s, 70s and probably up to 1985 or so. The Who, Rolling Stones and Billy Joel fit here.
3. Classic Pop: Pop from the 60s, 70s and probably up to 85 or so. The Monkees, Phil Collins, ELO and A-Ha would probably hit here.
4. Modern Rock: Rock from the Late 80s on. 30 Seconds to Mars, Nirvana and REM fit here.
5. Modern Pop: Pop from the Late 80s on. Pet Shop Boys, Fall out Boy and Adele fit here.
6. Alternative/Indie: Rock that is sort of “not rock” along with independent bands. Cake, the Decemberists and the Cure fit here.
7. Rap/Hip Hop: Pretty well understood. Childish Gambino, Grandmaster Flash and Kendrick Lamar fit here.
8. Miscellaneous/Other: Anything not covered by the previous categories or just wildcards that got a lot of votes.
Some bands might fit in more than one category, but we’ll try to make it so all the most supported bands can get in and have roughly equal distribution among the categories as possibly. Also these may change depending on nominations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Only qualifications are a band/person must be real. And must have released an album. (no EP only bands)
NOMINATION PROCESS:
Every person may nominate up to four bands/artists (this may change depending on how many people participate). To do this simply use double octothorpes nominate and the name of the band. (for example: ##NOMINATEBlackCrabbe). Without the octothorpes it doesn’t count. It would be helpful for you to also list the category you wish for them to be in. A nomination counts as one “vote” for a band to be in the tournament. You may not nominate a band that has already be nominated.
SECONDING NOMINATIONS:
Every person may second up to three nominations. To do this simply use double octothorpes second and the name of the band/artist. (for example: ##SECONDBlackCrabbe). Without the octothorpes it doesn’t count. A second counts as one “vote” for a band to be in the tournament. You can not second a band you nominated.
SELECTING BANDS/ARTISTS FOR THE TOURNAMENT:
The 16 bands/artists that have the most votes (nomination + seconds) will be included in the tournament. Ties may be broken by a sudden death second, if that doesn’t work then it will based off of which was nominated first.
SEEDING/BRACKET ORGANIZATION:
There will be four brackets: Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D. These groups will be created by combining the selected bands/artists from two of the categories (done by random number generator). And ever artist will be seeded by number of votes for them. All ties will be broken by random number generator. After that the tournament will begin. Rules for that will be released after the nominations are finished and sorted.
NOTE: I hold the right to change the rules of the nomination process if the current one is too hard to follow or has serious problems.
Hopefully we can all get involved and have a fun time arguing about bands. Have a nice day webdippers!
