I read an article somewhere that the world economy was going to collapse in a few years in a way that would make the last one look like a walk in the park, and that top politicians all know about but are keeping quiet. It wasn't a very good article and I didn't believe a word of it.

...And yet if you assume that it's true, and that no-one in their right mind would want to be leading a nation when it happens, then suddenly everything that's happening in politics starts to make sense...

I would want to be a politician if that happened so I could do what I can to make it a little less bad..
