Can you actually solo without someone throwing the game?
I recently got my first solo in a non-live, full-press WTA game since 2010, but only because one player decided to throw me the game. Even at 17 centers, I could still have been stopped if everyone else worked together. This got me wondering: are there examples if high-quality games where somebody got a solo without being thrown one?

World Map Question
Question about the RIS squares on the board.

In the lower left-hand corner of the map - it that land, water, or both? Looking on the lower right-hand of the map, there appears to be an RIS land but also an RIS water. Which is it and do either of those territories directly link to the two squares in the lower left-hand side of the map?

Jun 2015 GR Challenge - Game 1 EOGs
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=163864
Result: Two-way draw between England and Turkey (my first two-way draw!)

This was honestly a pretty cut-and-dry game for me. I can almost never say, but aside from small details, I wasn’t really once surprised by anything that happened in this game. I had fun, though, mostly because Austria-Turkey and England-Turkey are both fun alliances. EOG below.

Reliability Ratings and drop outs
We all have games where players losing drop out, but there are some which get utterly ruined by guys in pivotal positions going AWOL. Is it time that players who are proven unreliable have to sit out for a period?

Tips for World Diplomacy
I have played 50+ games on the World Diplomacy variant, but I have not soloed. Honestly, it seems like you can see a powerhouse coming so far back, it is impossible to not get faced with a stalemate line!

Please post any hints here, I wanna conquer the world :'(

EXACTLY when does a game end?
In my set of rules, rule XIII indicates that possession of a SC only occurs after fall retreats have been completed. On this site, it seems that for purposes of determining a solo victory, a victory is declared following the fall diplomacy phase prior to retreats. For clarification: on a fall turn that great power A takes its 18th SC but great power B could then retreat into into one of country A's SCs, is country A awarded a win prior to that fall's retreats? Thank you.

Returning after a four year break...
... as an old adversary messaged me offline and I decided to succumb to temptation. I was wondering if any of those former combatants, or indeed anyone else, fancied a classic map, slow turn (probably 48 hour), press intensive game to get me back up to speed.

Which territory is most seldom occupied?
I think it is down to Syria, Livonia, or Clydesdale.

It's obviously Rumania /thread

In all seriousness, I'd go with Clyde, but why aren't we counting seas?

The obvious answer is Switzerland

Clyde actually gets occupied quite a bit as England, Russia uses livonia often in anti Germany campaigns, and any good lepanto has an Italian army in syria.

My vote is Moscow.

Russia gets an army in their first round, but after that he almost never occupies/builds there again. Unless he gets overrun, but on average, it is usually the last center in Russia to fall.
DeathLlama8 (514 D)
07 Sep 15 UTC
Russia builds in Moscow quite often as a wait-and-see approach. I guess with some Russias it'd be Moscow.
Fluminator (1500 D)

You can actually get into Switzerland with 6 support.
TrPrado (461 D)
07 Sep 15 UTC
I agree. Armies get built in Moscow all the time. Now fleets on the other hand...
I think it's definitely Syria.
Finland? Most of the nobody goes there, when Russia/England do it's often decisive, and once either side gets Scandinavia, they put their units in Norway/Sweden/Stp rather than Finland.

Other options are Portugal or Tuscany.
Would that not be awesome if you could get into Swiss with something reasonable like an attack and two supports? But then you had to move out the next turn? And the Caspian could be built on and used? Or Iceland, Ireland or Sicily could all be used in certain (very unique) situations just to mix it up a bit.

You mean like the Modern map? Also, Gascony is usually vacant. People for the most part go around it.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

I'd say that it's Clyde.
Tantrum (4185 D(B))

Places like Finland and Moscow often end up getting occupied for many turns on end in stalemates or near-stalemates. Livonia too. I'd vote for Syria or Clyde, with my guess being Syria, even counting seas.
thorfi (1023 D)

Gascony? Go around it? What?

Hang on, can we have a clarification of "occupied" please?

Do we mean "no unit from any country ever moves into it in any season"? (And possibly starts in it?)

Because I assure you as France there are sometimes rather good bet hedging reasons to move to Gascony. Fewer reasons if you're not France, though.

Syria gets used as the target for standard Lepanto, doesn't it? Pretty sure plenty of Italys still try that opening.

Assuming we're counting home SCs as "occupied" at the start of the game, then I'd be betting on Clyde, Finland, or Syria in that order.
JamesYanik (548 D)

Let's not forget bohemia, until a stalemate line, it is relatively vacant, and only moved into because of retreats. (Tuscany is similar)
Nescio (1059 D)
07 Sep 15 UTC
Interpreting "most seldom occupied" as 'usually (in a large number of games) the last territory with an unit', then here's my guess:
Sea: Adr
Coastal: NAf
Land-locked: Boh
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))

I would think Syria sees a fair bit of action - its a convoy destination for the Lepanto, after all. Clyde is an attack route for Russia, but since that happens far less frequently, I'd guess it would have to be Clyde.

Barents Sea might also be a contender, as its rarely used to support St. Pete in the stalemate line and its also unnecessary for England to occupy to take St. Pete. Adriatic sees action any time Austria and Italy fight, also the occasional Turkish fleet.
thorfi (1023 D)
07 Sep 15 UTC
You often see a Fleet (either Russian *or* English) in Barents in gunboats during early game though, depending on the situation. Not always, but it's not rare, I don't think.
thorfi (1023 D)

If we're thinking about "unoccupied until end of game", though, I think we're going wrong: we want the least likely to be used province for solo wins? Draw games are a bit more likely to cover the whole map with occupation, no?

So we'd be looking at provinces off the common openings, and off the common stalemate lines, which means... Clyde.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

Let's keep in mind that although many Italians try the Lepanto these days, the chance that Turkey doesn't recognize it is basically zero. Most of them end with a spring 1902 bounce in Eas and an improvised stab on Austria.

Here's a variant of the OP question: Which SC is least likely to be captured?
Interesting OP. Which, incidentally, raises the question why it's called Clyde at all? Why not Ayrshire?
"Why not Ayrshire?"
By all rights, it SHOULD be Glasgow, but since it's not a SC, choosing the river that flows through it is apparently the next best thing?

"Which SC is least likely to be captured?"

I assume that you mean which home SC is least likely to change hands (or most likely to be held) during the course of a game.

I nominate two:

Liverpool (often the last SC required by a French or German victory)
Ankara (Austria, Italy and Russia are weak, and this is the safest Turkish SC)
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
07 Sep 15 UTC
I'd argue that Liverpool is often the first English home center to be lost if France chooses to attack (and succeed, I should add). If France solos, he probably needs it. If Germany solos, he likely needs it, but its not required. Russia doesn't need it to solo.

For Ankara, Turkey, Russia, Austria, and Italy all usually need it to solo. I'd say it changes hands more than Liverpool.

Portugal and St. Pete can only be realistically taken by three powers each and neither one is likely to change hands all that often.
