Feminism, Authoritarianism and Gender
I hesitate to post this, but i wonder where discussion will lead...
Is Gender socially constructed? Is there a difference between gender identity and gender expression? What other issues does this raise?

Why'd You Choose Your Username?
It's a decision we all make, and one we have to life with for the rest of our time on this site; choosing a username. Some choose their own name, their initials, a historical figure or even a reference to a movie or TV show. So I ask all of you, just why did you choose that username you have?

LeinadT (146 D)

Mine's not that interesting, just my real name backwards. Plus "T," which is the last letter of my last name, as thus my last initial if I switched around both names.

I'm not really worried about internet privacy (I hope I won't say anything stupid--and besides the government already knows everything I say), so I'm okay with people knowing my name. I could've done something clever, like based on TV, sports, history, politics, music, or something like that, but what I'm most interested in changes from one hour to the next, so something specific doesn't really cover it. And I don't really have nicknames, so that doesn't work either. This is a Diplomacy site, so my rap name would be off-topic, I think.
DeusExMachina (59 DX)
21 May 15 UTC
Deus Ex Machina holds special meaning to me: It isn't just a video game (Deus Ex: Human Revolution) It's also a concept -- God of the Machine. Take it from literature and it describes that point where the hero somehow outwits the antagonist through luck or amazing circumstance, take it from the stage and you'll hear ancient times of thespians using contraptions to enhance the feeling of mistique towards the audience. Take it from computer science and you have the world-conquering Hacker. Anime dictates the concept as an omniscient 5th Dimensional God who knows every possible outcome to ever exist -- period. The concept resounds in me to be a figure of awe and omnipotence and overall badass-dom. All of my main characters in MMO's and RPG's are called Deus -- Translated from Latin, the idea is simple. God.

Oh, yes. Mine. Well as a few of you may know, I like the show Doctor Who, and there was a particular monster on this show called the Vashta Nerada ("the shadows that eat the flesh" supposedly). I figure, eh, I'm kind of weird, one could even say neurotic, and I decided, why not put those together? And thus, my username was born.
kahudd2000 (157 D)
21 May 15 UTC
Mine fits my initials, and then when I was growing up in the 90's I remember all these old movies and science fiction texts saying like "in the year 2000"! Things like "Knightrider 2000!" My first e-mail was kahudd2000, and I've used it since.

Now I have lived long enough that some of you people probably were born in 2000. If not, it'll be like that in a few years.

Squigs44 (273 D)
21 May 15 UTC
No clue why I picked Squigs. Literally just a random word.

44 is my favorite number though.
Durga (3609 D)
21 May 15 UTC
Squigs every time your username pops up I think "Squibs" - and then I think of that caretaker from Harry Potter, Filch.

My username is based off of my favourite character in the video game Disgaea (Laharl being the character, he's a Demon Overlord). Honestly no thought given to it, and it isn't my usual username.
Tasnica (3366 D)
21 May 15 UTC
"Tasnica" is a background name from my favorite classic game: "Secret of Mana". While the republic bearing its name plays a supporting role and is mostly in the background, I liked the look and sound of the name.

Considerably later, I realized that it was also an anagram for "Satanic", which made it even more interesting to use.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Outside%20Smoker

For the number: I like the way 27 looks when it's written down.
mitomon (511 D)
21 May 15 UTC
I really like Pokemon(mitoMON) and mito was my younger sister's nickname for me(pronounced meetoemon). I use it on all websites and games, a universal username.
But, wouldn't mitomon be more of a digimon-esque name?
WardenDresden (239 D(B))
21 May 15 UTC
I picked the name WardenDresden based off of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden of the bestselling series of novels by Jim Butcher, The Dresden Files. It's a spoiler from something like book 4 or 5 that Harry becomes one of the Wardens of the white council of wizards. I picked the name something like eight years ago, and the shorter form, "Warden" stuck with me through a couple gaming communities and voice chat groups. Haven't ever really felt the need to change, and I've identified with several characters from diverse universes with a "warden" title so I've stuck to it.

Tolstoy, after the infamous excommunicated anarchochristopacifist writer, Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. He also wrote a few cheesy dime novels people might have heard of, like War and Peace and Anna Karenina.
fiedler (1293 D)
21 May 15 UTC
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0455134/?ref_=tt_cl_t3

Fiedler is a post ww2 east german jew working for the Stasi. He is idealistic and brilliant at his job, has delightful manners and indeterminate sexuality, and rides a spectacular career arc, which I won't detail so as not to spoil for those who have not seen the film. It's a cute story. Why his name? I'm just sympathetic to his point of view I suppose. Or rather he encapsulates the nature of western man, the contradiction and absurdity, the agonizing ecstasy or the ecstasy of agony. Admirable and pitiable. We live in a sea of error and confusion etc.
Chumbles (791 D(S))

I have a nasty teddy bear. He tells me what to do in all my games. He gets to hit all my visitors and thinks that the human race have screwed things up so much that he and his kind coudn't do a worse job. That's why he's practising here. (Chumbles is my username pretty much everywhere.)

I've always enjoyed little concentrated nuggets of wisdom and any opportunity to expand my collection. What are some of your favorite quotes?
