Getting a second undergrad degree in a mostly unrelated subject
I think I may end up doing this 2-4 years from now, and I just wonder how common it is.

Also, a potentially stupid related question - how possible is it to get into a grad school in a subject you did not study in undergrad? Can you just take courses a la carte to meet the pre-reqs and/or beg them to let you give it a shot? All my research on grad school doesn't turn up much on what kind of students are accepted into the programs.

2015 Winter SOW - Recruitment
Hello everyone! I'm pleased to announce that a Professor and Adjunct Professor have graciously offered to teach the 2015 Winter School of War. We are looking for TA's and Students, details within.

Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

For those of you unfamiliar, the goal of the webDip School of War to provide an organized learning experience. Seven new players (Students) are each assigned an experienced player (TAs) for advice and then play a game which is commentated and "graded" by venerable, expert players (Professor and Adjunct Professor(s)).

The Professor for the 2015 Winter SOW will be abgemacht, with Adjunct Professor being Sh@dow.

Looking for Students:
As a student, this represents a unique opportunity to receive one-on-one knowledge-transfer with a more experienced player. You will be assigned a TA, who will work one-on-one with you throughout the game. This is an excellent opportunity not only to learn about your country and get advice, but also to form a bond with another player. Many of the former TAs are also former SOW students.

What we're looking for in a student is someone who has shown commitment to games (the SOW can go for months and to NMR/CD is of utmost disrespect to others, even more than usual), the ability to clearly and somewhat frequently if need be communicate with their TA, and possibly most importantly a yearning to learn more about the wonderful game we play here. If you would like to be a student, please post below or PM me.
----
Looking for TA's:
As a TA, you'll be responsible for the ludological growth of a knew member of our community and disseminating that esoteric board game knowledge you keep in your mind to someone in a useful manner. I was a TA for the 2014 Fall SOW and it was a great experience, both as a Diplomacy player and as a friend to my student. Often we allow or encourage TA's to list a country preference as it is completely common and understandable that a player excels at a certain country or would rather avoid a certain country, when it comes to teaching others. Lord knows I can't teach someone to play Germany well!

What we're looking for in a TA is an experienced player who enjoys spreading knowledge and love of Diplomacy. The ability to clearly and effectively communicate to your student is of course a major strength for the TA. As a TA, you'll be expected to give both strategic and tactical advice to your student, although the student will have the final say and need not follow your advice (but is strongly encouraged to give you the reasoning they have for choosing another avenue of play). Please consider this to be as much a time-commitment, and possibly more at the beginning, than a high-quality Full Press game for yourself.

If you would like to be a TA, please post below or PM me, and include if you have inclusions or exclusions of the Great Powers as well for your TA'ing preference. It’s a truly rewarding experience, and a nice way to give back to this great community!
----
The School of War game will be
Full Press
Non-anon
Winner-Takes-All
2 days/phase

Because it's a non-trivial point: I will again iterate that at 2 days/phase this game will take months, please make sure you have time for that kind of commitment. The last SOW game went from OCT2014 to JAN2015.

We plan on starting March 2nd, 2015.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Just as a note - this is a serious time commitment to be taken by all sides. TA's and Professors put a lot of time into this, so students should put in that and then some. You will be expected to send a LOT of press, and at the same time coordinate with your TA. If you cannot talk to your TA several times in a phase, please reconsider joining.

Has anyone else noticed Valis slowly taking over the site? Clearly a plot to gain enough power to turn it into an auction site for his overpriced art collection!

It's been a while since I last TA'd, but more than happy to sign up again if you want me. I'm quite fond of Italy, but any country other than Austria (a personal weak point) will be fine.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

I take umbrage at your insinuation of me taking over. You should redeem yourself by bidding on my art collection! It's for charity, in that people often refer to me as a "charity case" (bless their hearts).

You heard him everybody, Octavious will teach you the secrets of the 22-dot Italy solo. I can't wait! Octavious is a valued community member and a great player. Just look at his recent game history:

Another weakness is a tendency I have for overestimating weak opponents, which can lead to me outmanoeuvring myself and being defeated by people who would have been a lot better off if they'd chosen to work with me :p

Hi! I'd relish the opportunity to be a student. I'm quite new but committed enough that my girlfriend feels that my invasion of Germany is more important than she is.

I'd also appreciate it if I could play an Eastern power (particularly Austria or Turkey) as most of my games have involved me being in the west and I don't know as nearly as much as I'd like to about the Balkans.

Thanks in advance!

^Draffin is a friend of mine, I can vouch for him.

I know it didn't work out well last time we had a new user join the SoW, but with this one I can drive round to his house and make him put in orders if it looks like he's going to NMR :P

I enjoy being a TA. I am decent with any country except Turkey. People seem to hate Austria but I like the Boom or Bust aspect of them.

I am very excited to see Sh@dow as a Adj. Professor. I recently had the priviledge/detriment of playing a game with him and his press was equally frustrating and a work of art. I expect his commentary will be the same.

Both Germany and Austria are countries that you might learn the most about how to press , and play one country off another. They both share the boom or bust scenario.

Students, when you express interest also make sure to mention which country(ies) you'd prefer. No guarantees, but we are usually able to match up players with their top choice. Same goes for TAs.

Players:
1. Draffin
2. rmf

TAs:

1. Octavious
2. Pete U
3. mendax
4. dyager_nh

The biggest lesson you learn from Austria is that sometimes you'll die regardless of what you say. I've always found Germany a lot more forgiving. Turkey teaches you how to make your own entertainment because it can be so painfully dull.

18 Feb 15 UTC
Relevant question - now that we have RR, albeit a bit flawed, is there a minimum RR students should have? The flaws in the formula shouldn't effect new players as much, I would think, so its likely pretty accurate.

I ask because sammitch has 70% RR. I'm sure the admins wouldn't mind throwing him a point to play, but that's a pretty low RR to be considered. But hey, I'm not running this show.
