Right, lastly, I'd recommend Karen Traviss for some good military SciFi, usually proprietary work, like Gears of War, Halo, and Star Wars, but I've only ever disliked one of her books that I've read, and for reasons completely separate from the writing.
Of all of these, I think Ferrari's book had the most literary style to it, as opposed to transparent prose. Butcher has a gift for setting up long series, and Sanderson has a gift for large books.
Of course, if you haven't read them yet, I'd go for just about anything by Asimov, Arthur C Clarke, or Heinlein as well, though I'd be a little more selective with Heinlein.
