Krellin, part of what I do as a basic writing teacher at a community college is to coach students how to describe what they are learning. "We learned to include sensory details in descriptions" sounds better than "We learned to include sounds and smells in descriptions." Having debriefed my own children at the dinner table, I also know that sometimes they do not wish to engage in that particular conversation. That said, however, I agree that much of public school, or even private schooling, is a total waste of time. In high school I was a great manipulator/negotiator and was able to avoid subjects I didn't want like a particular English class and biology, and instead finish four years of French, four years of Spanish, and two years of Germany, plus which I took Advanced Senior Math in tenth grade. The classes I learned the most from in high school were Sociology, Geography, American History (from a WWII vet), and my foreign language classes--oh, and Driver's Training. Everything else was mostly a waste of my time.
