The king is dead game 2 and 3
I've decided to make 2 more on the American and modern diplomacy maps. The rules will be the same as in the last game, so to review it there will be 4 different roles, the king, the knights the rebels, and the traitor/ traitors. Rules continued below.

Some backstory for your review...
So, I am working on creating a new strategy game and, as we al know, there is more than just game mechanics to create a good game. If there weren't, we would be playing Diplomacy on a perfectly balanced board with some kind of geometric map, no a Map of Europe set just prior to the events of WWI. The following is the backstory for my game. Comments are more than welcome.

Secession 2120

Backstory------

November 3, 2116 - President Jefferson Taylor "JT" Andrews (I-KY) is elected President of the United States under the promise to return the Federal Government to the people. He is the first independent candidate to ever win the highest office in the land.

November 26, 2116 - The transition of power is going smoothly until outgoing President Jason Niles Standish suffers a heart attack and dies. The press and the public expect President-elect Andrews to take office, but he insists that the Vice President Alton E. Beamon accept the position even if it is for less than a month...

January 20, 2117 - President-elect Andrews is inaugurated as President of the United States. His first act, to order the dismantling of the current bloated TSA security system and to place the Air Marshall Service in charge of the nation's airport security, promoting FAMS Director Robert S. Bray to the position of Director of the new TSA with strict orders to make the TSA professional but as unobtrusive as possible in air travelers' lives...

February 14th, 2117 (The Valentine's Day Massacre) - Terrorists bomb the Senate and the House, killing all but seven of Senators and Representatives, including Speaker Boehner and the Vice President. Every member of the US Supreme Court, save the Chief Justice, is assassinated, The Chief Justice's assassination was thwarted and the bomb planted at the White House was discovered and disarmed. Those Congressman not killed immediately are in critical condition and not expected to be able to return to their duties. Later that day and over the course of the next three days, a dozen US embassies across the globe are also bombed, some more successfully than others. No terrorist organization comes forth and takes credible claim for these actions leaving the world to wonder who committed the atrocities...

February 16th, 2117 - In an emergency session, The Supreme Court grants President Andrews power to take whatever means necessary to protect the United States and her people. The President begins talking with the Governors of the 50 States to find suitable replacements for Congress until a special election can be held. In a show of bipartisanship, he asks former President Beamon to be his representative and see to it that Congress represents the people. At least that is how it appears to the public and the press...

February 20th, 23rd, 27th, and March 4th, 2117 - Several suspected terrorists are shot and killed at various airports around the country. The press glosses over this incident in light of the tragedy of Valentine's Day. It is later determined that in at least two of these incidents (in Dulles and JFK), the "terrorists" were actually diplomatic envoys for countries not so friendly to the United States and President Andrews...

March 17th, 2117 (St. Patrick's Day Massacre) - Terrorists attack again, this time against England, France, and Italy as they hijack two 777 airliners headed to London, Paris, and flying them into Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, and Vatican City, killing thousands of tourists as well as the Pope and the Cardinals in Vatican City. Phone calls from the planes report it was the Air Marshalls who took control of the planes, but these are quickly dismissed when the Abdullah Azzam Brigades claim credit for all the attacks over the last month...

April 18th, 2117 (Easter: The Resurrection of a Nation) - The seven surviving members of Congress are given special positions as ambassadors to the world at large and are commisioned the "Freedom Seven" as the newly appointed members of Congress take office. Externally, they appear to be a diverse group, but their truly loyalty is as yet unknown. President Andrews reaffirms his vow to see to it the nation elects new leadership in 2120 and, despite protests, he says he doesn't desire a second term in office...

April through June 2117 - The world's security agencies investigate and track the AAB throughout the world, culminating in…

July 7th, 2117 (Victory over Terrorism Day) - The NSA and FBI in America, DCRI in France, MI5 in Great Britain, and the Vatican Gendarmeria in Rome, along with the help of the other EU security services, Interpol and local law enforcement take down every known terrorist organization in the EU and US while CIA and MI6 led elite units take out targets outside of the Western World. This is a top secret coordinated attack that happenes precisely at 1800 GMT. "Operation Final Victory" is believed to be a smashing success.

August-September 2117 - The surviving terrorist arrested in "Operation Final Victory" are tried and convicted rapidly and with much fanfare. The free people of the world had been wanting blood since March and they were getting what they wanted. The Freedom Seven travel the world spreading peace and good will and promising that this was the end of terrorism in the world. "A new era of peace and freedom has begun" they would say.

October 7, 2117 (Atonement Day) - The trials completed, it was decided that the Jewish day of atonement would be an appropriate day for the convicted terrorists' executions. The Israeli PM even gave his blessing to use the day for this purpose, something no one expected would happen. President Andrews felt differently though. He and the rest of the world leaders decided 3 months to the day after VT Day would be a better Atonement Day so as not to sully the Jewish holiday. Three months to the hour after they were arrested all the terrorists rounded up in VT Day were executed by firing squad, electrocution, lethal injection, or other means of execution as each country saw fit. Even the French dusted off old guillotines and the British dropped ropes for nooses.

October, 2117 - June 2120 - Terrorism in the world has all but been abolished. Demolition and reconstruction of the major landmarks that can be rebuilt are underway, and a new Pope has posthumously forgiven the terrorists and their executioners. All is at peace until...

July 4, 2120 (Independence Day: The Death of the Nation) - Leaked recordings of confidential Whitehouse meetings and phone calls reveal that President Andrews was actually behind all of terrorist attacks. Even behind former President Standish's untimely demise, His insidious plot to take control and become President for life.

July 5, 2120 - A few state Governors protest that they were dupped while most dismiss this as "an obvious fabrication". World leaders, dismayed by this leak, pull out of trade and treaty talks with the US until more can be learned about the source and veracity of this leaked information.

July 9, 2120 - Analysis by the German government reveals that the tapes from the AAB were, in fact, fakes and that they believe the White House recordings were authentic. The world turns it's back on the USA. President Andrews calls all overseas troops and ambassadors back home. The Freedom Seven renounce their citizenship to the US and call upon the true free world to grant them asylum from the man who had their friends and colleagues killed.

July 10, 2120 - The handful of Governor's who declared their innocence begin to declare their independence from the United States by seceding from the Union. States whose Governor's were in collusion with the President go under immediate Martial Law with Federal troops "backing up" the local National Guard. Pockets of resistance begin to form in these states, often with the help of local law enforcement and/or National Guardsmen with a conscience.

December 2120 - United by cause but divided by politics, the seceding states will have to fight for their lives and grow. But their neighbors may not be lost to them yet. The resistance is growing in the occupied states and without any trade, the people become restless and the federal government grows poorer. The USA is cut off from the world and, for the first time in its history, it has no allies...

I decided to take it far enough into the future to remove current political players form the picture, but not so far as to be dealing in teleportation devices and such. I want to stick with bleeding edge tech in the game play.

I'm guessing that the mechanics of the game is to rebuild the USA in some way, nation building. Does the backstory affect how the game is played, or does it just set the scene. If it's just setting the scene, it's prob too long. K I S S

Start off with something like...if we were to work out how many people have ever lived and then calculate how many decisions each one has to make during their lifetimes we would a rough idea about how many alternative realities there are. In one of those alternative realities the USA is divided into 50 autonomous states. Can you return it to its former glory? Secession..

This seems overly verbose for a game. Does any of it actually matter to gameplay? If not, you're just distracting people and inviting all kinds of problems, such as people critizing your time line or alienating people because your game is unnecessarily political.

Personally, I find the best games are completely unrelated to the modern world. RISK!, Settlers of Catan, Pandemic come to mind. Yeah, Diplomacy takes place during WWI, but that fact adds very little to the game.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Mar 14 UTC
I mean, RISK! is technically about Napoleonic War, but you see how little that actually matters to the game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
Actually, it is to overthrow the present Federal government and become the dominant player or alliance in the game. There will be several possible strategic wins. There once was a game called "State of War: The Second Conflict Between the States" the GSI ran. But they sold the rights to someone who has since disappeared off the face of the map. It is the inspiration although I am completely redoing the game mechanics, only using the concept of several different states fighting each other and the federal government at the same time. I have sent emails, made calls, and even sent a legal letter to GSI's former owners so I have covered my bases with my attorneys should someone say "too similar!" The game stopped being run in 1994, so it has been 20 years (more by the time I get the mechanics figured out and everything written, play tested, rebalanced, replaytested and ready to go live in the wild) and I intend on it being a free game, not even advertising money (much like WebDip).

But I will think about trimming it down. Maybe eliminate the Freedom Seven stuff and cut down on the outside world. Possibly rework the treachery that has us separated form the rest of the world. I want the separation though so that at some point in the game, I can introduce the possibility of recruiting a friendly outsider to the cause, like the forming USSA had with the French during the American Revolution.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
@abge - I intentionally made the President an Independent and didn't hit anything but the TSA (whom both sides hate amongst the general populace) to try and avoid the politics, but I need a motivation why the US is falling apart. To me, treachery in the White House and a President who grabs power by surreptitiously killing everyone in congress and SCOTUS is pretty good cause for the people to revolt and the terrorist attacks on the world to draw in more support being more conspiracy that becomes discovered alienates us from the world.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
But if either of you want to take a stab at editing it down now that you know my game-play targets, I'd love to see it. I'll give credit where it is due when it finally comes to fruition as well.
Draugnar (0 DX)

This is old school PBM strategy gaming with victory conditions. One of which will be "N months after DC falls, the game ends and the largest alliance is the winner."
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Why do you need a reason, though? Wouldn't the following be sufficient?:

The federal government has collapsed! The states are forced to fens for themselves! Do you have what it takes to reunite the union? Seccesion!

Now that's a game I would play.
Putin33 (111 D)

Conflict the Middle East Simulator is a pretty cool real-world based game that, although buggy, is entertaining.
Putin33 (111 D)
03 Mar 14 UTC
I agree with abgemacht that too much backstory is unnecessary. I'd look at Conflict to see how they use backstory to begin the gameplay, I think it's not too much while being a bit more detailed than "government collapses, secession".
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
OK, abge. Interesting. But it eliminates the idea of the Federal government still exerting control over the states not controlled by the players as well as the incentive to occupy DC, which in State of War was a heavily fortified federal holding.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
Thanks, Putin, I'll take a look.

You're missing the point. I don't fully understand what your game is about, so I can't write the actual baxkstory. But, compare the pathos of my back story to yours. Mine is exciting and gives you just enough to get into the mood to play. Yours makes me feel like school : /

KISS, Draug. There shouldn't be required reading for a board game. Players should have roles within a simple overall structure, and if there is story, the players should be able to make it up as they go along based on gameplay.

Take one of my favorite card games, for instance - Resistance. Its extremely simple. You have X players. Y are spies for the government. Z are resistance members, fighting against the government. Z needs to identify and expose the spies. Spies know who the other spies are, resistance members do not know who is in the resistance. The goal is to find out who the spies are. Simple. You could have a backstory about a corrupt autocratic regime with real world tie ins, with a complex history and creation story of the resistance, but in the end, simple is better.

tl;dr - Focus on gameplay, less on story.
Putin33 (111 D)

Other simulators with a bit of backstory include Crisis in the Kremlin and Balance of Power.

Putin33 (111 D)

"There shouldn't be required reading for a board game"

Are you guys not into boardgaming? Many games now have very complex rules. Simplicity is out.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Mar 14 UTC
I don't mind reading complex rulea at all. What I mind is reading mediocre (sorry, Draug) future history that is irrelevant to gameplay.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
@abge and 2WL - This isn't a board gamne, it's a web game. And this backstory is not the brief "what am I about" but more of a prologue you can choose to read or not. I have a separate intro planned to grab the potential players attention. And remember, web based, not a board game, so I'm not trying to get someone to pick up a box and take it home.

That said, I will try a trimmed down version and also create the intro tonight.

I do appreciate your input and will tweak it to a degree.

The goal of the game is simple:
Don't be eliminated
Grow your alliance of states to be the biggest before someone eliminates the federal government

Do this several ways:

Political influence - Those states who are still under federal control can be persuaded in time to join you without military might. Other players states can to, but you have to have much greater influence to sway them to your side.

Military influence - Capture a states capital and it is yours, but remember to keep up your influence or someone else may steal it with political influence.

Political influence is done via money, plain and simple. Money talks, bullshit walks. But you can't run a deficit without risk of collapse, so make certain you have income.
- Taxing states (hurts political influence in those states if the taxes are too high)
- Capturing federal reserves
- Improving infrastructure (it takes money to make money)

Military needs
- Recruits (pulling too much from a state hurts political influence)
- Technology (holds states with major cities to take advantage of their universities or spend money on specific armies to improve their equipment to newer tech levels)
- Nuclear silos (no, you can't nuke another state's capital or major city, but you can set off an EMP in the upper atmosphere above the city and turn it into an electronics free zone for a period of time.) A sufficient tech level of a garrison there can provide a missile defense system that can knock out the missile before it triggers the EMP blast. There are a limited number of missile silos and they are a "use once and done" weapon which comes with a PR hit on all your own states.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Here's the long and short of it. I don't like your timeline. I don't think it's realistic or particularly interesting. Your game may be amazing, but I would never know because I've been put off before I started playing.

What you need to decide is I'd your back story contributes enough to the game that it's worth losing some potential players. I have no idea if I'm representative of people in this regard or not.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
@Putin - I read the back box of Conflict and it was interesting. The key difference is that is a logical extension of the world as it exists with one basic historical event, the assassination of your predecessor.

I need to find a way to condense my political intrigue down as succinctly as that.

Please continue to discuss as this is helping and I hope to find play testers from amongst this community.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
@abge - Let me get more of the rules of the game fleshed out and present those to you. Then maybe you and the rest can help with the intro and the backstory timeline.
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Mar 14 UTC
And feel free to overhaul the timeline into something that makes more sense. The goals are A) Make a reason for some of the states to secede and other states to have martial law with growing unrest amongst the populace and B) make a reason for the world to turn its back on us.

What's the polite way to say buzz off?
In a couple of games I've had another player pestering me for an alliance. Unfortunately, it was someone I had already decided to fight (you gotta fight somebody), so I tried to ignore them.
But I don't want to be rude, and I don't want to explicitly say, "I'm going to send my troops to kill your children, steal your cows, and perpetrate tax fraud."
Is there a nice convention for saying, "I do not want an alliance with you at this time"?
