RIP Nelson Mandela
Yes, it's seemingly old news, we've all known it's coming, but there's no reason we shouldn't offer a little respect to, literally, one of the greatest and most respected figures in human history. Tough to swallow.

Is this a game error?
I'm playing a game with some friends, and the last turn's orders ended up very strange. I don't believe that everyone missed turns, but there are almost no orders showing on the map. And even if everyone had missed their turn, there is no explanation for the army in kiel being dislodged. Please take a look: http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=128965

Poor Casting Choices and Underwood Sings--NOT a Few of My Favorite Things!
So...Carrie Underwood doing "The Sound of Music." Kids that were stiffer than cardboard as the Von Trapp family. A black nun in Nazi Austria (I'm all for color-blind casting, but...was there no other role for her, a black nun in Nazi Austria just on the verge of WWII just seems an indication the production team didn't care one bit about the setting) and so on...this was a thing that happened. Thoughts on Carrie Underwood's "The Sound of Music" remake?

giving players their points back.. a bad idea?
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/36/pb75.jpg/

I have never run into this problem before, but this is very frustrating. Giving players under 100 D their points back, puts an unfair twist in the game. In the game i played with this player, we almost had a draw forced against one larger power, and he decided to attack me.

Pisa tests
I know you will all get the first part of this question right but you need to guess the second part...(no cheating)

Part 1. Helen rode her bike from home to the river, which is 4 km away. It took her 9 minutes. She rode home using a shorter route of 3 km. This only took her 6 minutes.

What was Helen's average speed, in km/h, for the trip to the river and back?

Average speed for the trip: ..................... km/h

Part 2. What percentage of the 15 year olds in the following countries who answered this question got the answer right?

(a) UK
(b) USA
(c) Shanghai-China
Octavious (2701 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
Does the US give a damn? Given the choice of sacrificing 10 hours a day to study for the sake of being a slightly better student, would you? Is the test a load of bull?
Octavious (2701 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
awww... I was hoping for a more open question :p
redhouse1938 (429 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
@Maniac, I'd say her average speed was 28 km/h, but I'm not sure it's possible to answer the question: you could answer the average speed over time and the average speed over distance right?
Maniac (189 D(B))
03 Dec 13 UTC
"slightly better student" you don't know results of above question yet. You may be shocked.
Maniac (189 D(B))
03 Dec 13 UTC
@Redhouse - the question wanted the answer in km/h
Octavious (2701 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
I answered before i read the question. I find the question constricting to my western creative talents ;)
Octavious (2701 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
I also fundamentally disagree with using decimalised distance with non decimalised time. Give me miles :D
redhouse1938 (429 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
Well, I think you could argue that over time, she took 9 minutes riding 26 2/3 km/h and 6 minutes riding 30 km/h. That makes a time average of 28 km/h.
Over distance, she rode 4 km riding 26 2/3 km/h and 6 km riding 30 km/h, making a distance average of 28 2/3 km/h.

I've been looking at some of the4 PISA sample questions on the website. It's multiple choice with 4 possible answers...

In one of these questions Columbian students averaged 8%...

42, of course. It may not answer this question correctly, but it is the ultimate answer, for certain.

@Oct
I just proved that the first question was badly formulated... unless it was also multiple choice and one of 28 or 28 2/3 was excluded...
Octavious (2701 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
@red

The first question doesn't seem to match the format of the questions on the PISA site I'm looking at. I suspect it's been mangled by the media.

Also the name Helen implies the cyclist is female, and a female minute can vary in length considerably
redhouse1938 (429 D)
03 Dec 13 UTC
Hmm

Yes the question does indeed appear as Maniac says it later on in the test and it is badly formulated.

Wouldn't it be fun if for every question we'd find an explanation on why it is badly formulated?

-No it wouldn't because The Netherlands did pretty well on this test.

Given our schooling style and cultural involvement in education versus theirs, it's not shocking at all.
Octavious (2701 D)

How stupid all kids are shocked me. if those sample questions are a true reflection the test is not difficult. Mind you, when I was 15 I never took things like this seriously. I recall taking part in a government anonymous survey in which I insisted I was a regular hard drug user and had several sexual partners each month.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Dec 13 UTC
Aren't those fun, Octavious? I want us to have a nationwide drug and sex prevention panic because we all lied :D
redhouse1938 (429 D)

I have to agree with Oct. The questions are so simple, that you're taking in too much of the motivation aspect. Kids from Asia are known - beside being good at math - to be highly ambitious and wanting to do well on tests. I finished a master's degree in chemistry, but I wouldn't even *want* to do well on this test that is simple to the point of being insulting.
Maniac (189 D(B))
03 Dec 13 UTC
For those who don't already know 2% of US children got the answer right; 3% of UK children and 31% of Shanghai-China children. I was shocked.

I was also pleased that my 13 year old got that question right.

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
03 Dec 13 UTC
Maniac, you're overdramatizing this whole thing. Yeah, it's sad, but do you seriously expect kids in the USA (I don't know about the UK) to a) care, and b) do as well as students that in general stay in school longer each day and do more work outside of school?
krellin (80 DX)
03 Dec 13 UTC
Bo - is your excuse actually "Americans are too stupid to care and don't work hard enough?" Really?

<sigh...>

I guess China's assertion that it's time to end the domination of US currency in foreign trade is one we should pay heed to, as our youth don't seem to give a shit.
