I agree that this is a good question and good example.Jamiet99uk wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 1:43 pmGreat example.Aristocrat wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 1:25 pmThis question has tripped me up in past games as a guesser and so I’d like to ask a clarification of you here that I will apply to subsequent similar questions this game (unless a questioner specifies differently). This clarification is made without reference to whether it would impact the answer to this question, future ones, or if I’m simply being annoying.
Is this question asking whether what I deem to be their #1 source of fame is on the list, or whether they are widely known for one or more of the things on the list?
Using an astronaut as an example, if needed - I wouldn’t say John Glenn’s #1 source of fame is being a politician, but he is still quite well known for being a senator for 20+ years. Would he be a yes or no to your question?
I did not ask this question, and will leave it to the questioner to clarify, but I would say that in the example of John Glenn, he is *not* "Famous, largely" for his involvement in politics, so it would be a "no", for me.
It's the use of the word "largely" that makes this slightly problematic. If the question was "is he known for politics?" then John Glenn becomes a "yes" because a lot of people *know* he held elected office.
For me, I think that the key question to ask in the John Glenn case is: would he have been an appropriate (if somewhat boring) 20 Questions pick *without* his astronautical activities? He served in the Senate for 24 years and ran for president in 1984. Compare Glenn's political career to, say, Gary Hart (who also ran for president in 1984). Do you think that Gary Hart would be too obscure of a pick

Yes this person is or has been involved in one or more of those fields.DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 3:50 pmIs this person involved in any of the following fields: visual art, architecture, photography, dance, comics, game design, graphic design, toy design, or cuisine?
Subject to the caveat that I think the only way to answer this question fairly is to take a broad interpretation of these terms.
Re: 20 Questions, Game 287
I said "largely famous", so John Glenn would be a yes. I would say that even for someone like Michelle Kwan, "largely famous for being a diplomat" would be a yes.Aristocrat wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 1:25 pmThis question has tripped me up in past games as a guesser and so I’d like to ask a clarification of you here that I will apply to subsequent similar questions this game (unless a questioner specifies differently). Re: 20 Questions, Game 287
I should probably stop using "largely famous" since it appears there is no agreement on what it means.
Was this person born in the United States?

Does this individual have any works that are currently on display in a museum and/or have they designed a building in a major city (let's say 1 million+ population)?

Assuming you mean works they created, the answer is no, or at least I am not aware of any.DreamTrawler wrote: ↑Tue May 14, 2024 5:29 pmDoes this individual have any works that are currently on display in a museum and/or have they designed a building in a major city (let's say 1 million+ population)?

Re: 20 Questions, Game 287
Interpreting primarily to mean the foremost singular reason for their fame, the most reasonable answer in my opinion is no.

Has this person won a Nobel Prize?
The only person you're truly competing against, Wesley, is yourself.
Re: 20 Questions, Game 287
Geven the qualifications in this answer, I would scratch the Nobel Prize question.
