Chp. 4
Evelyn ran like she had never run before. She stole a look behind her and saw nobody following, but the alarm bells were still ringing throughout the city. They were looking for her. She spotted a partially open door in the alley and wearily stepped inside. The room was full of jars of preserves and canned fruits and vegetables - some sort of storage room. She looked around, saw nobody, and finally allowed herself to catch her breath. Her heart rate slowed, adrenaline leaving her body, and she felt the tears falling down her face.
They killed him. They killed him and I used magic. Why didn’t I use it earlier and save him?
The tears continued to fall and her body started to tremble.
A sound at the door startled her and pulled her out of her grief. Her eyes surveyed the new figure that stood in the doorway - tall, lean, dark skin. It was too dim to make out features, but Eveyln was fairly certain she did not recognize this woman. Her heart rate quickened again, and the adrenaline began flowing back into her body. She glanced down and noticed a faint blue smoke rising off her hands.
“Calm child,” the woman’s surprisingly deep voice said. “I am here to help you. Not to hurt you.”
“Who are you?” Evelyn asked.
“My name is Kasia. I will explain more, but we do not have the time right now. We need to get you somewhere safe.”
Before Evelyn could respond the rear door of the storage room swung open, and two guards walked in, eyes locked on to Evelyn. She now stood in the room with no clear exit. Guards in one door and this mystery woman standing in the other.
The guards charged.
Evelyn focused her mind, feeling the energy inside of her. Her skin began to emit that blue aura again, and she closed her eyes, focusing as best she could. She pulled her hands up in front of her torso, palms turned out towards the incoming guards. She opened her eyes and….PUSHED.
Nothing happened.
Oh god. Nothing happened.
The guards were an instant away from her when two glowing blue forms rushed past Evelyn, blue swords slamming into the guards weapons. The absence of an audible clash was somehow jarring, in a way that Evelyn never would have expected silence to be. The forms were something Evelyn had never seen before. They looked just like men, though the two figures were different. One was much taller and skinnier than the other, they wore different clothes and even their swords looked distinct. Yet both glowed the same blue, and she could see the guards' figures, slightly distorted, through both of these spirits' torsos. Evelyn turned and looked back at this new woman, Kasia, glowing blue, her somehow relaxed.
“Child,” she repeated. “Please. You must come with me now.”
“Okay?” Evelyn said. It was the only word her brain and lips could put together.
She looked one final time behind her and saw one of the blue figures bury its sword into a guard. He fell in a heap.
Evelyn’s head spun trying to process what she was witnessing, and she let Kasia’s arm tug her as they fled out of the building.
