THE SHERIFF raps his knuckles on the cabin door, men-at-arms flanking him on either side. The orange and purple light of the setting sun performs the only dance of the evening as it darts from grim visage to grim visage. Tonight is not a night for joy.

The door quickly swings open. A blonde woman of 32 years, in villagers’ garb, greets the men, beautiful blue eyes marred by bloodshot red. Her eyes widen.

“Did you find him?”

The men-at-arms clumsily look down, dodging the intense demand of the woman’s eyes as a boar piglet dodges the jaws of a wolf. Both fail to evade their inquisitive hunters’ attention.

“Yes.” The sheriff alone meets the woman’s question. “Simon is dead.”

The woman’s mouth hangs agape, as if to stifle a scream.

“Henry… what about Henry? Henry was with his father… if you found Simon, you must have…” The woman trails off, struggling for air, holding back increasingly panicked breathing.

Simon was one thing. Not even the sheriff can bring himself to tell the woman of Henry’s fate. His stone face and silence do all the talking.

The sheriff braces for the usual reactions—screams, crying, even fists flying in desperate rage. He’d seen every type of grief from wives who lost their husbands, mothers who lost their children.

Or so he thought. The woman instantly regains her composure, her breathing returning to normal. She stares resolutely forward, possessed by an extraordinary calm. The sheriff had scarcely seen such an eerie expression before; only in the faces of the soldiers he commanded on the battlefield in years gone by. Few things could unnerve a man who’d seen everything, and yet, as the woman croaks out a simple demand, the sheriff wants nothing more than to be anywhere else.

“Who.”

The sheriff sighs. “Fräulein—”

The woman slaps him. “Don’t fräulein me, Wilhelm. WHO?!”

The men-at-arms step up, but the sheriff waves them off. “We don’t know. We think it was the Schwarzhexen. But we don’t have any leads on who they are, yet. The scene was… grisly.”

“I see.” The woman backs through the threshold of the cabin door. “When you know, tell me. I have to prepare dinner.” The door closes, and the men disperse.

“What was her problem?” asks one of the men-at-arms.

“She lost her husband and son, what do you think was her problem?” shoots back the other.

“I know that, that’s not what I mean. Her reaction to it. She looked ready to kill us. She looked ready to kill the whole village.”

“Yeah… she lost her husband and son.”

“All I’m saying is, I’ve never seen such a calm. Most of the time they collapse in a heap, or start wailing. It’s like she knew and already made peace with it…”

“What, you think she did it?”

“Enough,” rumbles the sheriff. “Let her work through her grief in her own way. Not for you knuckleheads to judge.”

“Sure enough, sir,” replies one man-at-arms, “but you have to admit it was strange.”

“I don’t.” The sheriff turns to face his men. “Now get some rest, you two. Tomorrow, we’re going to pay a visit to the old fort.”

“Wait, we’re going to see—”

“Das Hexenjäger.” The sheriff waves them off. “See you at sunrise.”



Karla approaches the vegetable garden quietly, silently thanking her father for all the years of tracking game in the forest as a child.

Her quarry stoops over to pick up carrots, ignorant to the imminent danger. A stout woman of 45, Helga is well-liked by all the village, but Karla knows that she hides a dark secret beneath her warm exterior. Simon and Henry told Karla that they would be stopping by Helga’s home on their way into the woods. She was the last person of the village to see them alive.

No, Karla corrects herself, the last person to see them alive at all.

“Hallo, Helga!”

Helga jumps and drops her carrots, then sheepily grins at Karla before going back to picking them up. “Hallo, Karla. Any news about your boys?”

“Actually…” Karla sighs. Helga looks up, with a slight expression of surprise. Didn’t expect them to find your handiwork so soon, witch?

“They found Simon and Henry. Both… dead. I don’t know what to do.” Karla looks down and gracefully slips her right hand behind her hip, grasping the hilt of her dagger.

“Oh, Karla, you poor thing, come here,” Helga replies, and starts toward Karla. “What got them? Bears, wolves?”

Helga leans in to embrace Karla.

“Witches.” Karla glares at Helga, and Helga stops in her tracks. She says the word without accusation, and yet…

“There’s no such thing,” Helga starts, defensively. “Witches aren’t r—”

Karla springs forward. The blade finds its mark—buried deep into the neck of the older woman. Helga’s lifeless corpse falls silently to the ground, crushing the tomatoes in the garden.

Karla quickly cuts open the right shoulder and chest of the dead woman’s garb, searching for the telltale sign of the Schwarzhexen—the brand of the ouroboros, the mark of a powerful demon which grants the witches their power. She strips the garb and finds…

Nothing.

Karla stares in dread, blade trembling in her hand, as the gravity of her blasphemous act closes in around her.

Well, I thought my entry post channeling all that 'burning the witches'-energy did at least hint at it, also since I knew I can scan (if not like a cop) I didn't want to tie myself to strong to reads. Maybe that might've made me look more like mafia, so sorry if I misplayed here, but I saw a way of not being the target of the nk there.

I didn't really bother. I first thought about it but as vt in other games I crumbed some things but it never was taken up by anyone so I came to the conclusion it could only hurt if somehow mafia takes it up.
