Re: The Counting Game

I didn't know this game, I had to look it up. In medieval Europe, falcons were very expensive and indeed they had been used for a King's ransom: After the battle of Nicopolis Turks held captive the son of Philip the Bold of Burgundy. Philip, being the richest man in Europe at the time, offered 200.000 golden ducats for his return. Bagiazid, the Turkish Sultan, denied the money and asked for (and got) twelve falcons.

749 On the fourth of December John of Damascus dies, the most learned man of his time and composer of many theological essays and hymns is revered as a saint.

"Marwan II suffered a major defeat at the Battle of the Great Zab near Mosul (Jan. 750) and fled to Egypt, where he was captured and killed (Aug. 750)."

752 (seems I am posting a lot of aircraft numbers lately)
Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 was a Boeing 737-800 aircraft that had just passed a safety inspection and crashed tragically in Iran.

The year of the Papal States formation

756, after continual threats from Lombardy and other Germanic peoples the Frankish King Pepin III repels a Lombardy invasion of Rome to help save the Pope from subjugation. He then cleans up much of middle Italy and grants the land to the Pope, allowing for the creation of the Papal states. This is another step in strengthening Frankish-Papal relations and would eventually culminate in the crowning of Charlemagne as the Emperor of the Romans, a title previously held by the Byzantines, thanks to his defense of the Pope and the fact that Byzantium was ruled by a woman which many believes prevented her from being Emperor. Later this title would be passed on to Otto I, creating the Holy Roman Empire.

At the moment the title was held by a man, Constantine V. Maybe he was ignored as in the eyes of the Pope (and the church) he was a heretic due to his iconoclastic policies.

757 ΑD, the Pope didn't have too much time to enjoy his new states, he dies after only five years on the throne. He is succeeded by Paul I.

758- the area code of St. Lucia (one of the Caribbean windward islands.) The numbers were selected to match the old phone system of assigning letters to numbers on a phone 'dial.' S (7) L(5) U (8) for obvious abbrevatorial reasons.

Thanks for the information, I knew this was the code (I completed a novel taking place mostly at Dominica last week) but I didn't know how the numbers were assigned.
759 AD Pepin the short defeats the Muslims pushing them beyond the Pyrenees, in Spain, eliminating this danger for the western Europe nations. (Spain is another story; there war has just begun).

761 is the lowest centred square number that is a Chen prime, a Sophie Germaine prime, a non-palindromic reversible prime but not a Proth prime.

That should come in useful one day.

762 - the number of home runs by Barry Bonds, the all-time leader in American baseball, though perhaps with an * at some point. He passed Hank Aaron, who hit 755, on August 7, 2007. The only other player to have hit 700 or more is Babe Ruth with 714. No co

763 mph (1228 kph) is the land speed record held by Royal Air Force fighter pilot Wing Commander Andy Green driving the ThrustSSC on October 15th 1997 in Nevada. This exceeded the sound barrier...

The ThrustSSC was powered by two afterburning Rolls-Royce Spe turbofan engines, as used in the British version of the F-4 Phantom II jet fighter.

There's a serious set on Wg Cdr Green.

I wonder why my Black Sea fleet needs two full seasons to reach the Aegean from Black Sea, while a stupid iceberg can pass Constantinople in just one :?
