Google says it originated back to ancient times, but it became popular (or at least most people's understanding of it) in medieval times.

What might a typical resume look like for a qualified individual applying to this position?

I'm not too sure as the qualification is relatively subjective (at least when compared to say a smith or a cooper), but this profession usually appeared in relatively upper class.

Its equivalent in the modern era takes form in a different name.

Is it a mummer?

I can't stand mummers. The second best thing that's resulted from Covid-19 is that we've had a year free from bloody mummers.
