Ankara Crescent

#1 Post by TBroadley » Mon Jan 04, 2021 2:39 am

Who's up for a game?

I propose we follow the 2000 Summer Olympics rulebook - it lends some dynamism to the endgame in my experience.

I'll start with Sevastopol. Is that still common or has the metagame moved on?

As an expert player myself back in the day, albeit with 2008 WDC rules, I must say the meta has left you long behind. I'll start with Brest, the clear superior opening, even with your silly 2000 Olympics rules.

Shucks! Knew I should have read up before putting my foot in it.

I've only ever played with the 2008 WWDC rules. That's led to some memorable confusion, including one time where a player tried to drive a Formula 1 car through a convention centre.

I'll bounce A Lon and F Bre in ENG.

Ah, good response. Forgive my mistake, I'm rusty.

I've got my next orders ready to go, but I don't think it's my turn yet, is it?

Overlay Sevastopol

I'm pretty sure this counter was popularised like a month after the 2000 SO rules came out. Surprised you hadn't heard of it!

2000 SO rules have pretty cool endgames though, agreed on that. Almost worth the ludicrously unbalanced earlygame.

I've always been a fan of the 2015 Philadelphia Variant rules.

As such, I will say F Portugal

No, unfortunately you are in Nidd, which means you must order three successive holds before you can make your next order.

The Overlay Sevastopol move is normally a devastating counter to my Brest opening. Well done, Captainmeme. That being said, you should have foreseen Chaqa playing F Portugal, which as you know lets me free sail to the Irish Sea under the 2000 SO rules. However, what you may not be aware of is that Appendix D of the 2000 SO rules let me ride a convoy to any adjacent square of the final destination of the convoy following a free sail that lands in the territory of a convoying ship. I therefore ride jasnah's convoy to Sevastopol, displacing you to Rumania and leaving you stunned for a turn.

Be happy that this isn't the 2008 WDC rules I play under normally or this would have left you in secondary Nidd, which would have forced you to hold for 2 turns before making further progress.

I thought the mods agreed to hide offensive forum games like this.

Who plays Ankara Crescent for the offense? Everyone knows a sound defense is key.

I have watched the game more than played, and, given the uncertainty regarding the rulebook to be used, I'll dare start with F Moscow and see what happens.

Given my presence in Sevastopol, I shall make the move to Armenia, leaving me a numberwang away from the golden goose.

-1 point for playing out of turn, otherwise a solid move.

Oh shoot quite right. I am used to WDC rules as mentioned before which give me the option to make the simple slide I did following any hold. What a stupid mistake to make. My apologies.

A strong counter... under normal circumstances. But in this case you've just given me the opportunity to play F NTH! Six SCs are within my grasp.

Ack. FlyingBoat's move was literally the only counter to Overlay Sevastopol there and everything had to fall perfectly in place for it.

Hijack Stefano's F Moscow
Retreat Caspian Sea

I'm sure you remember this maneuver from the 2011 Independent Invitational... but A Ceylon convoys to Wales.

I now am allowed to move in turn to Armenia and I do so with pleasure.
