Black Lives Matter protesters "Overwhelmingly Peaceful" and "remarkably nonviolent", study finds

#1 Post by Jamiet99uk » Thu Jun 10, 2021 5:21 pm

I'd just like to put this here to correct the view, spouted by certain members of this forum, that BLM protesters are violent thugs:

https://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/news- ... arch-finds

"These figures should correct the narrative that the protests were overtaken by rioting and vandalism or violence.

"Such claims are false. Incidents in which there was protester violence or property destruction should be regarded as exceptional.

"The claim that the protests are violent – even when the police started the violence – can help local, state and federal forces justify intentionally beating, gassing or kettling the people marching, or reinforces politicians’ calls for “law and order.”

"Given that protesters were objecting to extrajudicial police killings of Black citizens, protesters displayed an extraordinary level of nonviolent discipline, particularly for a campaign involving hundreds of documented incidents of apparent police brutality.

"The protests were extraordinarily nonviolent, and extraordinarily nondestructive, given the unprecedented size of the movement’s participation and geographic scope.."

Wow... That is the worst interpretation of statistics I've seen since John Lott of Crime Prevention Research Centre wrote

Comparing the Global Rate of Mass Public Shootings to the U.S.’s Rate and Comparing Their Changes Over Time

and concluded that the US had a favourable rate of mass shootings to Europe

The exact same data can support the opposite headline

Let's see... They've collected data on 7,305 events, and are using the idea that because half a dozen members of the woman's institute had a peaceful protest supporting BLM in small town Arkansas, that makes the shockingly violent events we saw in several big cities less significant? Utter nonsense.

So let's look at their figures.

First, police made arrests in 5% of the protest events,

So we're talking over 360 events requiring arrests.

with over 8,500 reported arrests (or possibly more)

That's a lot...

Protesters or bystanders were reported injured in 1.6 percent of the protests

Well over 100 protests resulting in injuries bad enough to be reported...

In total, at least three Black Lives Matter protesters and one other person were killed while protesting in Omaha, Austin and Kenosha, Wis. One anti-fascist protester killed a far-right group member during a confrontation in Portland, Ore

... including several deaths

Police were reported injured in 1% of the protests

Police suffered injuries in scores of protests (lots of potential for rounding errors here, but we're looking at 50-100 events)

3.7% of the protests involved property damage or vandalism

So an astonishing 270 protests involved mindless vandalism, including the arson and looting we all saw on TV.

100s of Black Lives Matter protests remarkably violent, study finds

So a more honest interpretation of figures would be

The last year saw American cities hit by hundreds of violent protests in the name of Black Lives Matter, resulting in thousands of arrests and several deaths.

But what is the percentage of those arrested that had charges dropped and not brought to trial? Police will illegally arrest and charge people only ti drop all charges and release hours later. They count arrests for news reporters who were legally present doing their jobs. They count arrests for emergency medical workers treating injured persons.

Police will spout all sorts of false information to make themselves look important and in charge pf a situation, I had a police officer tell me he was confiscating my house in the name of Child Protective Services when there was no child living and/or present after I pointed out he had spouted some other illegal charge. That's the way they are trained to escalate to maintain control.

Cherry picking? There's a bloody tree full! Of course the writers of this report would count all the leaves as well and declare the tree "overwhelmingly fruitless"

You conveniently missed the whole part where it identified that a lot of the reported violence (of which there was comparatively little, in totality) was initiated by the police or fascist counter-protesters.

Because it is a complete non statement. The report, in the bit I believe you are referring to, says

In many instances, police reportedly began or escalated the violence, but some observers nevertheless blame the protesters.

which is utterly meaningless. Saying something "reportedly happened" is not the same as saying it happened, merely that someone said it did. The use of the word "many" is again meaningless. How many is many? A dozen? Twenty? Two-Hundred? Who knows?

Sorry, Jamie, but this... what would you even call it? It's not a paper in a peer reviewed journal... the musings of a couple of researchers, perhaps?... this musing is little more than a cynical exercise in using statistics to support an opinion.

Seriously, have a look at John Lott's work. It's pretty much the same junk methodology used to support liberal gun ownership law.

Yes, you are.

For some reason you decided to trawl through this website, find a thread that had been inactive for over one year, just to post a comment about me.

Obvious troll is obvious.

Off you fuck.

Police, the protestor groups, and media will spout all sorts of false information to convey the message they want you to believe without your own critical analysis. This isn't new information.

Also, many police suck at their job due to bad training (as you highlight) and too much emphasis on mental health management that they quite frankly cannot do. My typical method of response: Be respectful, but don't let them walk over me with bullshit.
