Bristol shows the way

There aren't any major elections in the immediate future, with only the distant prospects of the German Merkel replacement election and French Presidential (no doubt the progressives will behind Marine Le Pen as a historic opportunity to give France a female leader) on the far horizon.

But in the short term we have a fun little election for the Mayor of Bristol. The current Labour Mayor is up against Green and Lib Dem rivals, and the Lib Dem has an interesting policy commitment.

Dr Caroline Gooch, Lib Dem candidate and medical science consultant, will stand on a platform of scrapping the mayoral system, saying it is "unnecessary and wields too much power".

American political enthusiasts take note. This is the kind of platform that could take America by storm and transform the Presidential system forever.

An interesting thought. It wouldn't work here in the United States at a Federal level without term limits placed on Congress. You'd have the same people running the country for decades. The Executive branch also controls cabinet nominations, foreign policy, SCOUTS nominations, and so on.

Still though... I like it.

Maybe, you transform the Executive branch into a decentralized cabinet. Secretary of State sets foreign policy agenda, Transportation does their jam... Either nominated by Congress or positions are elected by popular vote every two years. I think it would be a great idea!
