I wouldn’t be quite as cynical. This is happening because America rejected Trump. (Sure, by a narrow margin etc. etc. but I’m trying to be an optimist)This is the breakage associated with that. If anything it’s a step forward even if it’s ugly.

If anything is a failure it’s the Capitol security measures. Like, it’s not like this was a surprise - not sure why they were not prepared.
I can hardly believe how badly prepared they appear to have been. I mean literally the Capitol has its own dedicated police force. How could they have totally failed to prepare for the possibility of something like this happening? What are they there for!!??

Very sad day. Many Republicans in Congress, and even Pence finally were doing the right thing and then this bullshit... Fucking pathetic bunch of crybabies. Turns out they're only interested in "law and order" when things are going thier way.
I was listening to Mitch McConnell's speech just before this all kicked off.

It was quite a good speech; he spoke well. Measured, diplomatic, articulate. The very opposite of Trump.

The surprise protest that was publicly planned in advance snuck right up on them

House Minority Leader, Kevin McCarthy, is on CBS news condemning the violence. Thank goodness. He is asking Trump to make an address to the nation to get his supporters to step down.

Notice how restrained the police are against Trump supporters where the National Guard is still considering a request for more troops to restore order from an armed mob that has been recorded fighting inside the Capitol building, shots fired, and windows broken.

Contrast that with a few months when Trump flunkies order the National Guard to use tear gas and military vehicles to disperse a peaceful demonstration in Lafayette Park so Trump could have a photo op in from of a church.

One difference here though is that many Trump supporters may be armed which makes the situation much more delicate.

Despite Georgia, Trump claims he will "never concede" and calls more thugs to arms. Meanwhile lickspittle Republicans prepare to thrust another spear into the side of an already wounded democracy. But there's always something that can be done – #NilDesperandum
Oddly enough conceding is not a requirement of the democratic process, he will still be removed on Jan 20th. How and ever, it might help quell the violence...

I recommend a really quick impeachment.

Also this:
I am told that the reluctance of DOD to call out the DC guard is because they would come under the command of POTUS, which would obviously be a problem.

If this was a Black Lives Matter protest dozens of them would have been immediately shot dead by the police.

Still 2 loooong weeks more to go. :(

I hope there is some way for others to stop the shithead to press the nuclear war button. You'll never know what his next "strategy" could be.

Mitt Romney's statement:

“We gather today due to a selfish man’s injured pride and the outrage of his supporters whom he has deliberately misinformed for the past two months and stirred to action this very morning. What happened here today was an insurrection, incited by the President of the United States. Those who choose to continue to support his dangerous gambit by objecting to the results of a legitimate, democratic election will forever be seen as being complicit in an unprecedented attack against our democracy. They will be remembered for their role in this shameful episode in American history. That will be their legacy,”

You know a President is a complete shithead when he makes George W. Bush look like a great elder statesman.

Maybe not, latest word seems to suggest that Pence called in the national guard, which suggests the 25th amendment has already been invoked.

Would be a lot faster than impeachment...

For what Bush lacks in brainpower, he actually does care about 'Merica. His ideas just haven't always been great...

The police opened the gates for the protestors to storm the Capitol:

The USA is a failed state.

An armed mob, called to Washington by Donald Trump, have stormed into the US Capitol. Shots have been fired. Police are using tear gas inside the Capitol Building to try to supress Trump's militia. Armed Trump supporters are reported to be assaulting the State Parliament in Kansas and other states.

I repeat. The USA is a failed state.
There will be an orderly transition of power. The United States Congress will finish certifying the results of the Electoral College vote in hours and has already as of a 12:30am Pacific certified enough ballots to confirm Biden as President-Elect of the United States of America. Biden will be sworn in on January 20th. The Democrats have taken control of the Senate and will be seated accordingly. Unfortunate though this is, what you are watching is the last, dying grasp of Donald Trump's regime and the glorious death of Senator Hawley's career.

This is not an end. They have been practicing, this is not the first federal building to be invaded, previously they hit state capitals, and success breeds success.

What makes you think there will not be similar violence at the inauguration.

I'm still hoping that Pence removes Trump, and an impeachment occurs, before the 20th.

Trump should be on trial for treason. He told these people to come to Washington. He gave a speech where he told them many of his favourite lies. He encouraged them to march on the Capitol. After they smashed their way inside and invaded the chamber, he told them "I love you".
