The company Renegade games acquired the rights to Diplomacy (from Avalon Hill, I think?) and made a new edition with wooden pieces.

Thanks, very helpful. I Googled and the new edition looks much better than the old one collecting dust on my shelf.

I found a copy of the 1999 version (metal pieces) on ebay; the pieces from that one and the board from the newest Avalon Hill version are the way I prefer to play (if I could find 6 others to play it with...). I haven't gotten Renegade's version, but if I didn't have the 1999 edition I'd buy it.

It's a game of diplomacy made using high quality materials and the wrong colour scheme. Imagine playing a game where the expression "wintergreen" actually makes sense? Doesn't bear thinking about
