I had a DOW sign up going. Had 2 ppl interested

Forum Dead of Winter

Dead of Winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition — but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! Certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group's goal, but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's looking out only for his own interests!

Dead of Winter being played on a forum is only slightly more requiring of effort. It's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies, and keep the colony's morale up.

Dead of Winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

You may think this sounds a ton like a simulator. It is. Its literally a zombie apolocalypse simulator. But unlike the simulations non-objective nature there absolutely is a way to win a game of dead of winter.
----

Details
The colony has an objective they are trying to complete, but each player also controls a group of survivors that has a secret objective. Often this secret objective requires that a player help complete the colony objective. Only players who have completed their secret objective when the game ends will win.

5-12 players

Players each phase gain 2 actions and one move

Perform two of the following actions.

Attack - Attack a zombie or survivor in the players location. Roll exposure die to see if survivor is injured or killed.
(Rolled by GM)

Search - Draw one card from the item deck of that location.
(Will use actual cards from the game)

Barricade - Place a barricade over one of the zombie spawn points at that location's entrance.

Attract - Move 2 zombies from one location to the player's location.

Survivors Ability - Some survivors have special abilities that require an action die to be spent to use.

Take free actions that do not require die.

Play an item card from their hand.

Move a survivor to a new location. Roll exposure die to see if survivor is injured or killed.

Trade equipped items with another survivor in the same location.

Spend a food token to raise a die value by one.

Call for a vote to exile another player.

End Game: Game ends if the morale track reaches zero, the round track reaches zero or the main objective is completed.

Victory: If at game end the player has completed their personal hidden objective then they win. The group wins if the main objective is completed and the traitor wins if the main objective fails.

Hey Brainbomb,
You're free to play the game here; it will be a useful test. While you're doing so, just be aware that we are still playing with the forum integration. If any more issues come up while that is happening, your game may get interrupted.

Dead of Winter - Zombie Survival

#8 Post by brainbomb » Sat Sep 30, 2017 6:45 am

Character Options:

A+

Carla Thompson, Police Dispatcher: She has a low search value and can use it to stock up on weapons. All aboard the patrol car to value town.

Bev Russell, Mother: Unless you’re the very first player, odds are pretty good that she'll take down a lot of zombies and free up dice to do other things.

A

Loretta Clay, Cook: Who would like to search for an on demand Food 2 that doesn’t increase waste?

Kodiak Colby, Woodsman: I like to think that he just kills zombies before they even know he’s there. Silent but violent, but not in a smelly way.

Arthur Thurston, School Principal: Great for picking up food and other items.

Andrew Evans, Farmer: Players often find themselves at the grocery store. A 3+ search for 2 cards there is valuable.

A-

Ashley Ross, Construction Worker: Give this strong woman a gun and she’ll hold down the fort. Great colony survivor.

David Garcia, Accountant: Being able to make free noise anywhere on every search is very useful.

Jenny Clark, Waitress: If searching just once, she’s one of the best in the business. At 3 searches, she’s equal to David (look at 6, keep 3), but at the cost of her 2nd and 3rd searches being higher variance than the first one.

Alexis Gray, Librarian: She'd be worse if a low fight value was a big deal. She’ll find plenty of books and fuel, which will help you find even more items.

B+

Sophie Robinson, Pilot: Is there a good card over there? I guess I’ll go spend a 1 and take it!

Thomas Heart, Soldier: With roughly a 70% chance of getting a 5+ when rolling 3 dice, Thomas is one of the best arguments for taking on additional survivors. He’s kind of like a less reliable Bev.

Janet Taylor, Nurse: Like Alexis, she’s a 4+ double searcher.

Talia Jones, Fortune Teller: Like Sophie, a 1+ searcher never gets in the way. Her ability can be pretty relevant and offers a great opportunity to help (or hinder) the Colony. A personal favorite.

B

Daniel Smith, Sheriff: His special ability is more versatile than Thomas or Bev’s, but it might get him killed.

Brandon Kane, Janitor: It’s a dirty job, but this guy generates value.

Olivia Brown, Doctor: Wounded people are often out in the field, so it can be hard to use her ability without risking exposure herself. It’s still cool to generate free medicine when you can.

B-

Gabriel Diaz, Fireman: Although taking on extra survivors can be a curse in disguise, he can help thin a search deck if nothing else.

John Price, Student: I put him down here, but he can just as easily go anywhere else. A few of the most powerful special abilities to copy are Colony- only, so John may not get to use his special power very often. If he shares a location with someone, they’ll attract more zombies, unless he’s living off of nature’s teat with Kodiak Colby.

James Meyers, Psychiatrist: He’s a decent character just because he can do something even if you don’t spend a die on him ever. Watch out for a betrayer; he makes for a very tempting combat target.

C+

Brian Lee, Mayor: Like James, he can do something even when you don’t spend a die on him. It also means his high search and fight values aren’t as weak as they appear.

Sparky, Stunt Dog: He’s resilient and has solid numbers, but he doesn’t generate any surplus value on his own.

Rod Miller, Truck Driver: When you really need to get a survivor somewhere safely, Rod’s your man. Decent numbers help him be relevant when he arrives.

C

Maria Lopez, Teacher: Her usage is pretty narrow and she is eclipsed by Arthur, but she does search on a 2+. Despite being a teacher, she barely gets a passing grade.

Annaleigh Chan, Lawyer: Her colony ability is marginal, and she won’t use it very often since she searches well.

Felicia Day, Actress: Part of this analysis assumes that we're not taking the crossroads into account (because of their low incidence and spoiler potential in the guide), but if I guess that the good ones are roughly as likely as the bad ones, she's still a 2/2 with high influence and no ways to squeak extra power out of your dice.

C-

Gray Beard, Pirate: He might actually be the best card in the game, since he can get you lots of cards, but you might just get yourself exiled and find yourself unable to use your ability or complete your new objective.

Harman Brooks, Park Ranger: Sure, Frostbite shows up more often then a Bite, but it’s not as deadly. Couple that with his 3’s, and Harman is no match for Sparky.

D

Mike Cho, Ninja: he’d be great if other people couldn’t build barricades.

Buddy Davis, Fitness Trainer: His ability really isn’t all that useful.

Edward White, Chemist: With a 1+, a 4+, and a medicine he can wipe out three zombies safely at the colony. That’s a 3 for 3, and requires a specific item...

F

Forest Plum, Mall Santa: He can help win a tight game if you’re in danger of losing it, but would you be in danger if you had picked a better survivor?

I mean you talk about people having "search" and "fight" values - but you say nothing about how the search or combat mechanics work.

Explain the rules please.
