I couldn't find a spaceman that fit all the criteria earlier today, but I think you have it. Endeavor and Challenger are references to Space Shuttles and he was on a few flights (looks like mostly Discovery and Atlantis.)

I almost guessed Thomas David Jones. I thought it couldn't be him because he was in the Air Force, but I guess he wasn't famous for that so I can't complain.

That was my logic. I take the questions at face value and leave it to the players to word them in a way to get maximum information.
I think it helped raise his obscurity because his Wikipedia page doesn’t use the name Tom Jones.
