M82: Magic the Gathering Mafia [Game Thread]

#1 Post by brainbomb » Tue Jul 18, 2023 1:34 am

M82 GAME INFORMATION

GM: brainbomb
Cohost: worcej
Day Phase Deadline: 2pm Pacific / 5pm Eastern
Day Phase Length: 48 hours
Night Phase Deadline: 2pm Pacific / 5pm Eastern
Night Phase Length: 24 hours
Anticipated Start Date: Tuesday, July 18

MAFIA OVERVIEW

Mafia is an educated guessing game of epic proportions. The objective of this game for the town majority is to kill all mafia members before they outnumber the rest of the town. The objective of the mafia minority is to survive until they outnumber the town. The game is typically very active, so the thread will grow quickly. However, it is essential to read the thread to play the game.

GENERAL RULES

This game follows standard WebDip Mafia Rules, located here. There are nonstandard mechanics; see Setup Details in the next post.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Players may be warned, forcibly replaced, or modkilled for violation of game rules. The GM team will attempt to minimize disruption to the game, but will use whatever means are needed to preserve the integrity of the game.

Players who have site-wide muted other players are asked to unmute them to play this game. Players who have been silenced on webDiplomacy due to site infractions will be forcibly replaced from the game.

Players who wish to quit playing may be replaced at GM discretion. Replacement is not guaranteed. Substitutes cannot participate in spectator chats until they sub into the game and are subsequently removed from it (e.g., by dying).

VOTING

To vote for a player, type ##VOTE <player> (e.g. ##VOTE beancomb). You may unvote by typing ##UNVOTE. You may switch from voting one player to another without unvoting first (e.g., if you ##VOTE Eden then type ##VOTE Bona, you will vote for Bona). You may choose to no-kill by typing ##UNVOTE. You don’t need to type out the player’s full name, but failing to do so may lead to ambiguity that causes errors in vote tallying, particularly with the bot. In the event of a tie vote at the end of the day, no player will be killed.

You may vote to end the day early by typing ##END. If a majority of players are voting ##END and casting the same vote (whether for a player or to no-kill), the phase will end early. If the day ends more than 8 hours into the start of the day phase, the remaining time will be added to the next night phase; if the day ends less than 8 hours into the start of the day phase, the next night phase will end 24 hours early.

Role Interactions and Scenarios/Stipulations
If virgin dies no kills may go through that night, however if there is an arsonist they may douse. If there is a third party their kill would fail.

If Angel protects someone who is doused by the Arsonist the dousing attempt will succeed. The following day if that person is ignited the angel will die also.

The day exiler must submit their action before final five minutes of a day. If a day exiler schedules a time for their shot to go off, and they are ignited before that time happens, their action will not go off. Anyone killed by the exiler will not flip role or alignment. If woebringer is active the day exiler will not be able to use its ability that day.

The Hider chooses a person and hides behind them, if they are saved by the angel they will not die from hiding behind a mafia or third party. If the Hider is behind a mafia or third party on a night where virgin is activated they will not die from hiding. Otherwise if the hider hides behind mafia or third party they do die.

The arsonist may opt to douse someone instead of using the factional mafia kill. They may douse one person per night. If a person is protected by an angel the dousing will succeed. If a woebringer is in effect the dousing will still succeed. But it will not be possible to ignite that following day.

The lumberjack may shorten a day. If this happens all roles with day actions must adjust accordingly to new phase lengths.

Watchers can witness hiders, arsonists, factional kills, and angel visit on Night 1.

Vindictive Lich ability is not triggered by quoting a post. However if someone is caught gaming the system and posting in small fonts, or intentionally hiding messages within quotes to bypass this, that player will be vanillized or removed from the game.

Vote Reversal
If the vote reversal is used the player with the least amount of votes at 1 or more will die. If there are multiple players with 1 or more votes and a tie is possible, the vote reversal must also submit their choice at end of day for the specific individual they want eliminated.

If the Avatar of Woe (3p) is vanillized they will not retain their vest but they will retain their kill actions.

If there is a 3rd party, mafia team size will be 3 instead of 4, and a role of the mafia’s will be replaced by the SK at the GM discretion to retain proper setup balancing.

SETUP INFORMATION

M82 is a semi-open setup. There are guaranteed 2 town PR, and there are guaranteed 3 mafia. Speculating about if the setup is randomized or handpicked will be irrelevant as I am certifying the setup was completely randomized and nothing was handpicked.

You are a Vanilla Townie. During the day you must vote for someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be Eliminated at the end of the day. You have no night actions.
You win once all mafia are eliminated.

You win once all mafia are eliminated.

You are the Angel! During the day you must vote for someone; the candidate who reaches a plurality will be killed at the end of the day. During night one, you pick two players to protect. Gary played a swamp and tapped it to play dark ritual. He had enough Mana to play his personal favorite: Hypnotic Specter.

Mark was not phased by a flying 2/2 that makes him discard every time it attacked. He chuckled at the waste of a dark ritual to gain an early advantage.

On Mark’s turn he played one mountain tapped it and played a lightning bolt killing the Specter with impunity.

Mark stared at his cards and smiled.
Gary looked at his favorite card already in the graveyard.

What now?

The Game has Begun
You may now post…

The dark veil slowly dispersed as he was laying on the ground. The salty sea odor and the constant sound of the waves made it hard to get a clear head, but after a while, he finally was rid enough of the dizzy feeling to open his eyes. The brightness of the sun blended him, even while it was just crawling up from behind the horizon.

Slowly he tried to turn around and get the sand out of his mouth. The least that they could've done was putting him on grass or a blanket, but they just had to put him right there in the sand. When he felt like all the sand from his mouth was gone, he turned on his back. Instantly he turned back when he felt a sharp sting in his side. Swearing he turned around the other way, only then noticing what had poked him.

Of course, it was that duel disk. Some sicko must've put it exactly at this angle so he'd turn into it's polished edge. Mumbling unspeakable words beneath his breath, he crawled closer to it. The name itself was poorly chosen, not one bit of the metallic construction was close to a disc, it looked more like an armband with a giant blade on it. Nonetheless he cautiously took the thing and noticed five star shaped indentions. Looking at them, he remembered that there has to be two stars here too.

Frantically, he burrowed through the sand where the disc was just now. They have to be there, he wouldn't be able to do anything without them. He breathed a sigh of relief when his hands grabbed a smooth, spikey metal. Carefully he took them up and put them onto the place on the disc. His face grew darker though when he looked at those metallic stars and remembered the circumstances that put him here.

Just a game he remembered the voice that was hiding behind an avatar of a game card, the winners will get rich or just some harmless fun ... that was before the narcotics in his drink worked. While the drugs were affecting his body, the voice changed their tone, mentioned how they would be hunted and only would survive if they get off this forsaken island. And the only way for that was getting five stars to buy a ticket for a ship that knows the only save way through the minefield.

Additionally, everyone turning to violence would be instantly and forcibly removed. That voice didn't excactly explain how, but there was little doubt they had their ways. And to top it all off, only betting against each other and playing this card game would give you a chance to earn any of these stars.

He felt the dizzyness from his feet slowly fading away. Getting angry over his situation seemed to have at least one advantage. Anyway, he couldn't stay here on this beach, the water seemed to creep up to him and who knows what these hunters or whatever they were would do to him if they found him here. No, he had to get going, find some nurishment and water, maybe even someone who just wanted to steal his stars.

An idea struck him and he took one star and put it in a hidden pocket. Even if he ran into someone hostile, with that hidden and save, he might have another chance if he lost that star.

He took a deep breath. "Think positively" he mumbled to himself, "the worst that could happen is that you die ...". He awkwardly laughed as he went further into the island ...

huh, I didn't knew that mode existed. Sounds kinda intriguing, but I was told that a deck shouldn't have as much cards as this

I'm fine. Though I have a broken toe and just got a tooth crowned today and have jury duty on Thursday. But I'm looking forward to solving.

I'm pretty sure he is on the east coast, so that would be Eastern Time Zone, right? So half past 5 pm, I suppose?
