Ireland is a separate country. Now as a technicality, it wasn't in 1900, but many of its people wanted it to be. Most Irish people you meet today would be slightly offended if you called them "British".

Whoops, forgive my ignorance, I don't know how it slipped past me that most of Ireland is independent nowadays. My whole life is a lie :O

An Irishman in the 1800s could be described as British. So could Australians for that matter. For some people it would probably be a more accurate description than others, but it would be hard to argue that it is wrong

This is a bit of a hornet's nest.

Nobody was British before 1707 the he Acts of Union.

Nobody in Ireland was British before 1801. Most people in Ireland after 1937 (I think) were not British although some in Northern Ireland are.

Confusingly Ireland is and never has been part of Great Britain.

How people identify is even more confusing. For example my official nationality is British but I identify as English and Irish.

So, Fox's no to British didn't even rule out English, Welsh or Scots people who lived before 1707.

I shouldn't have asked British, I should have said something like "native to the British Isles'. (Look it up).
