Only two questions left, if I'm not mistaken!

Man, I thought that I picked an easy one . . .
Could still be an easy one, we just wasted a lot of questions on this one.

Does this character spend most of his time fighting Romans?
I'm very interested to hear which originally Spanish, Portuguese or Italian printed medium published stories about a man fighting Romans.

I can't think of anyone in particular off the top of my head, but Numancia is certainly mythologized in Spain. But yeah, Astérix is a French character, ha ha.

Did any movie with this character win an Academy Award nomination, a Golden Globe nomination or the Saturn award?
I'm glad that I didn't have to look up all of those movies, ha ha

Oh, that's the last question?
No more free guesses?
Assuming that you all counted correctly, you would have had one more question, and hence, still had free guesses. I said "fine" to not counting the 2000 question.

Why would it matter whether 20 questions were up or not? We can make free guesses (one per person) regardless of how many questions were asked or answered.

3. One guess per person does not count against the total, but additional guesses by the same person do. After all 20 questions are up, three total guesses are allowed.
I guess the wording is not airtight, but so far I thought after 20 questions we get 3 more guesses, no more freebies.

You're wrong.

After 20 questions, the class gets THREE more guesses, in total.

That's not what the rules say.

"3. One guess per person does not count against the total, but additional guesses by the same person do. After all 20 questions are up, three total guesses are allowed."

After 20 questions are up, 3 total guesses are allowed, and one guess per person does not count against the total.

Anyway, where is it written that free guesses can only be made before 20 questions are up?

It does after the 20 questions are used up!

Once question 20 has been asked, only three more guesses at the person, in total are allowed.

There is no information that the free guesses suddenly start counting against the total as soon as the 20 are used up. In the absence of such specific information, we must go with what is written, i.e. that the free guesses do not count against the total (whether that total is 20 or 3).

I'm not sure who drafted the rules, but the meaning of the wording is clear to all of us. And this is how we have been playing. You can check the threads from previous threads yourself to see how this rule has affected 'team' strategy.

You seem to be confusing the word guesses for the word questions. When the rules mention "the total", it is clearly a reference to the "20 questions". Otherwise the sentences would be reversed.

Also consider that the noun total can mean sum ("a product of addition"), which in the context of the first sentence makes more sense than the meaning of amount ("an entire quantity") given that we see the word count in the phrase "does not count against the total". In other words, the first sentence provides instructions on how to add up questions and guesses (each question counts as 1, the first guess per user counts as 0 and additional guesses per user count as 1). The first phrase of the second sentence then clarifies that you stop this counting game after 20 questions, if it weren't already clear to the reader from the title of the game.

The adjective total has definitions that are closer to the meaning of "an entire quantity":
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/total

Granted, the adjective definitions don't quite capture the intended meaning either, but slightly reword the phrase as 'a total of three guesses are allowed' and what do you get? If you substitute total for the word sum, the phrase makes no sense. However, the phrase makes perfect sense if you substitute a total for the words an amount: the 'team' gets only three guesses (no more, no less) once all twenty questions are used up.

@Supi: This is just a fun little game that we made up amongst ourselves. There is no official governing body. The 20 questions game does not have a legal department that you can write to.

Everyone else, as JECE says, is very clear about the "three final attempts" rule. Hopefully we have now clarified it for you, also.

Thank you.
