The answer was actually "I would assume that he had it, since he has always, without doubt, been identified as male."

If there was any ambiguity in that answer, then we have to conclude that the person we are looking for was childless.

However, I guess that the answer can also be read as unequivocal.

Something about the time frame and the references to religion and politics made me think of a scientist who might have been controversial... not being Italian ruled out Galileo (who was the first person who popped into my head) and Copernicus was the next one I thought of.
