Was wondering if someone would ask that. I would say no, his most well known role was not in a western. That's Q 17.

No, not really. 19.

I'm a little worried I've gone "not famous enough", but this person was once on the cover of _Time_ magazine, so that's something.

I may give another small hint after Q20.

Did he ever win an Academy Award for either "Best Actor" or "Best Supporting Actor" ?

No. Nominated for "Best Supporting Actor" once.

This person's best known role originated on the stage and he played the same character in film a few years later - then, over 20 years after that he played a different character in a film in a completely different genre that was essentially written as a homage/pastiche of the original role (which was his last film).

To clarify, the "20 years later" film was the actor's last film role.

I am trying to think of / find actors who played the same role, first on stage and then in a film adaptation.

Yul Brynner played the same role in "The King and I" both on stage and on screen, but it can't be him because he's not American and he did win an Oscar.

Joel Grey played the same role again and again in numerous runs and adaptations of "Cabaret" but again it can't be him because he won an Oscar.

Rex Harrison played the lead in "My Fair Lady" on both stage and screen, but he's English.

I'm stumped.

Also, my person won a Tony award for their stage performance... and when they made the film, the studio did not want him to reprise the role. The writer of the stage version had casting powers written into his contract and forced the issue. Cary Grant was actually offered the role and turned it down... and also told the studio he wouldn't bother to see the film if the original actor wasn't cast.
