Would it be pedantic to point at that sportsmen tend to be athletes?
Well I would have put athlete as a subset of sports but let's ask.

Does the previous answer re athlete imply not a sportsman?
Outside of darts, can you give some examples of sportsmen who are not athletes, Damo?
Snooker players?

Was he a scientist?
Yes.

I think I would consider all sportsmen athletes for the purpose of this game, so won't count that question.

Would you expect a decently sized library to have multiple books that are primarily about this person?
No, I wouldn't.
Clarification request:
We cannot hope to find many books about this person. Does 'about' strictly refers to the person, or his research as well?

I would expect a library to have more than one book concerining both AT and AF.

I think subjective questions should not be allowed.

I agree with Damo.

A book about the scientific research and achievements of Alexander Fleming is, intrinsically, a book about Alexander Fleming. I don't think this clarification is required.

The contrary view would suggest that a book about the 1970 World Cup Final is not a book about Brazilian international footballers. This would be an absurd attitude.

It depends on your point of view, I guess. Is Jaws a film about a shark, or a film about something else that happens to have a shark in it?

Eh, I would not necessarily consider a book about penicilline as a book about Fleming.

As I'm the main person asking subjective questions, I can stop that. My opinion was that after so many rounds stranger questions would give a more interesting game and provide some variety.

That won't get rid of subjectivitiy obviously (The "are all sport players counted as athletes/sportsmen/ etc.etc.), but would help

If we were playing 20 questions to try to guess a film, and I asked "is it a film about a shark", and you said "NO" and the answer turned out to be Jaws, I would not be very happy.

I mean what Octavius said is stupid, but if we took your definition to mean what the question asks, then no one who is well known enough to Qualify for this game would actually not be counted- everyone should be related to the main subject of a book at some point. But a book about "The Turing Test" isn't about Turing (Though Turing should probably have multiple books b/c he has several bios at my local library- I just felt like throwing a guess out there)

LIkewise a book called "Famous gay scientist" that included a chapter on Turing wouldn't count- he's not the primary subject he's just one of them. The book question was asking "Would a library have multiple biographies? Would a library cover their particular incident if they did an incident multiple times? Are they the main character of a fictional series of books?"

I believe that to be the case. Many similarly uncultured people experience similar emotions when their limited perceptions are exposed ;) .

If it helps I could provide you with evidence from various established film critics who insist that Jaws isn't about a shark, so such an argument could be made even if it might be perceived as unfair in some circles (and celebrated in others). It very much comes down to how you believe games should be played.

Mrs Oct, in one of her finest moments, once forced the abandonment of a game of Monopoly by owning one of every property and refusing to sell them to anyone even in deals that heavily favoured her. People were forced to make modest incomes, without risk of bankruptcy from over exposure to financial risk, for over an hour before my brother in law lost the will to live and vowed never to play the game again. Magnificent.

These are two unrelated concepts you've mashed together to fail to prove your point.

To say jaws isn't about a shark might be valid, but in a party game like this it's entirely possible to "win" the game by answering questions with specificity. I could have claimed that Joan of Arc is "male" if we understand "male" to be having a male role, or to be taken as a male by others, or to have simply worn male clothes. But I have to answer the questions not with my own understanding, but with the knowledge that I have to answer them such that my fellow players also have the same belief and takeaway as me.

Your monopoly example just shows that the rules of that game are bad- your wife won the game by owning every property. The fact you continued to play until running out of money doesn't prove that every game should be played by attempting to follow every rule. It really just shows the opposite- unless your objective is make everyone kill themselves I suppose.

Which could be a fun objective with the next time I get to be clue master. After all, there's no rule saying I CAN'T argue the element oxygen is actually a person
