Oh. I didn't even think of how that actually worked out when I suggested I'd withdraw rather than be scum. That would actually indicate whoever replaced me is scum.

The surprise might be indicative, I’m not sure. I think both town and mafia would feel an expectation to be active during night phases and would consequently have an “oh shit” realization if, say, the player had taken on a lot of out-of-game responsibilities believing he would have more time “off” of this game than he really does. So I don’t really know if it cuts in any direction, but I haven’t thought about it much. What do you reckon it might be?

As for why it’s mafia-indicative, that’s simply an empirical statement about our recent meta and not the result of deductive reasoning. I for one don’t think it has to be mafia-indicative at all and have been somewhat hesitant to get on board with acting on this meta-knowledge. But at least this calendar year, my recollection is that a majority of substituted slots were mafia slots, which is conservatively twice as frequently as expected by random chance.

This is the objectively correct answer, we have night talk here because my main mafia community in mid-2014 allowed night talk, so I ported that over, and it just kind of stuck. It’s cool that we have a unique wrinkle in the larger mafia Internet space, but I’m not sure it’s really optimal practice. It’s definitely not standard across the Internet though lol.

If Byz was scum, and expecting only to be in scumchat at night, then being told night posting was a thing could have thrown him for a loop. His time-inability (or expectations to forum post combined with the wagon on him before the end of day 1, he might have panicked and worried that his absence would be AI.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it permissible for a non-role townie to be largely absent for the night phase? Couldn't he have just said "I don't have time to post in the night phase becauuse RL, I'll see you at the next daytime"?
