I just went through the entire list of nominees for best supporting actor and clicked every name that looked familiar. No Brits that died between 1950 and 2000, so I guess I am out.

Fair enough. When I looked it up the first year for supporting actor is 1936. The first one I looked at was Basil Rathbone. Fits the bill.
