Brainstorm: a criminal involved in politics could be a mercenary or a revolutionist?

I'm thinking possibly someone connected to the English Civil War....

Brainstorm: other than Blackbeard I also considered Alexander Selkirk but given both are sailors rather than soldiers I’m not confident in them. I am struggling to think of a solider, involved in politics but not a politician.

Think this could be one where I kick myself.

Did he participate, in some way, in the English Civil War?

Really good one Damo. My only tiny quibble would be - could he be considered a religious figure? Genuine question

Well done to you, Damo, on selecting such a challenging subject. That was quite tricky!!

Yeah that was difficult. The question was 'religious figure/leader', I think to have said yes would have been more misleading than no.

My other problem was 'Great Britain' due to when he lived. I was actually dreading the question "Was he British?"

I tried to make that easy for you by selecting "Great Britain" due to it being a pre-1900 figure.
