THE CLOUDS finally depart the night sky, harried off on the winds to their next errand. The pitch black of the woods brightens considerably as the celestial silver light of the full moon washes over the land. The forest remains quiet, as the woodland critters catch their final few hours of rest before another busy day. Only the rushing of the wind through the trees breaks a perfect silence.

Yet a malevolent force still stalks the silent night. Another of the nightmarish fiends haunts the wood, eagerly hunting the woman that felled its brethren earlier that evening. The monster assumes the form of a giant owl, feathers fouling the earth below as it glides on the wind, scouring the night for its prey. The silent killer is scarcely visible in the faint moonlight, save for its two hateful, glowering golden eyes.

Finally, the creature finds its mark. Karla sleeps by a faint and fading fire, passed out in a heap on the ground nearby. The fire consumes its final kindling and slowly starts to flicker out, an ill omen of things to come. Its master lies ignorant to the danger upon her.

The monstrous owl lands on her chest and spreads its wings. Its already foul odor intensifies into a deathly, rotting stench. Karla jolts awake, but her body fails her as she tries to throw the massive bird off of her.

Panic sets in her mind as the creature’s spell tightens its control over her, locking her limbs into place.

YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE MADE AN ENEMY OF US, booms an angry, alien voice inside her head. YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THEM.

I would rather die than abandon my family! Karla goes to speak, but her throat locks up.

AS YOU WISH.

Karla can only stare helplessly into the cruel eyes of the terrible predator as its merciless magic crushes the life from her. Everything else fades to black as her consciousness begins to wane.

Then, a gentle whooshing sound whizzes past her ears, and the creature is violently thrown off Karla!

The spell fades, and Karla sits up, looking over at the monster, now sprawled on the ground. Its legs and wings twitch gruesomely, nerves clearly mangled by what appears to be a large arrow shaft driven straight through its head!

Two sets of feet loudly stomp through the underbrush. Two men emerge from the bush and inspect the corpse.

“Damn, Fred.” Wilhelm looks at the shot in awe. “Came a long way since that time you shot Reinhardt in the ass.”

“I always told you that was on purpose.” Friedrich couldn’t contain his giddy grin. “Maybe now you’ll believe me.”

“I don’t,” Wilhelm replied, “but I’ll give you credit for this one. Hell of a shot.”

“Thanks, boss.” Friedrich turns to Karla and offers his hand. “You know you don’t have to go after these things by yourself, right?”

“It’s my fight.” Karla sighs. “But thank you.”
