WILHELM sits on a stone pew, one of a few only incompletely reclaimed by the vines and undergrowth in the abandoned church. He sits hunched over, his chin resting on his right fist, gazing at the mostly-shattered stained glass window on the opposite wall. The Holy Queen—albeit missing most of her head, smashed out of the window at some lost point in time—raises a scepter in triumph. Below the homage to the Queen lies the altar; atop it rests the poor wretch that took his own life to avoid damnation by the witches.

“I wonder what the Holy Queen would say about this… if her eyes hadn’t been smashed out,” Wilhelm wonders aloud. “Would she praise his resolve? Damn his soul? Would she care at all?”

“Can’t see why she would, boss. I don’t much care what she thinks.” Friedrich approaches the altar to start removing the body.

“Best watch yourself, Fred,” Wilhelm says with a smirk. “She’s still got her ears.”

“Are we really gonna haul this guy all the way back to the village? I didn’t bring enough food for this…”

“We could bury him outside,” Wilhelm suggests. “There’s that old burial site. Can’t give him a Christian burial without a priest, but I couldn’t tell ya if he’d even get one.”

“That’s harsh, boss.” Friedrich frowns in clear displeasure. “The guy chose death over being used as a vessel for the demons. He’s a hero in my book.”

“Mine too,” Wilhelm responds, “but you know how particular the Church scholars can be about these things. If they couldn’t think their way into a box and find a way to miss the obvious, they wouldn’t be scholars.”

“True enough. Where do we start di—”

A woman’s piercing scream shatters the din of woodland noises, followed by the pained howling of a canine. The men draw their swords and rush outside.

“This way, boss! It’s coming from this way!” Friedrich rushes into the thicket, with Wilhelm in hot pursuit.

KARLA sits silently by the fire. The clearing had seen many visitors before her, well-worn and snugly tucked into a low spot amidst the gently rolling terrain of the forest. The autumn day slowly yields, and the chilly wind of the autumn night bites Karla. But the woman doesn’t flinch; a fire hotter than the one before her feverishly dances in her eyes. Neither cold nor witch will defeat her tonight.

A gentle cracking of a twig in the woods breaks an otherwise perfect silence. The slightest snap rings like a thunderclap, and as Karla turns toward the source of the sound, a humanoid figure faces her.

Karla’s mind races. Who is that? How long has he been watching me? Why is he just standing there?

Her fiery anger melts to primal fear as the entity begins approaching her. With each “step” an increasingly loud cracking echoes in her ears; but as she watches the creature approach, her eyes widen as she sees that it does not “step” at all—it floats above the underbrush toward her!

Karla stares in frozen horror as the utterly alien monstrosity closes in on her. Though humanoid in shape, with a head atop its shoulders, Karla cannot see anything resembling a face—no eyes, no mouth. Yet as it nears her, a foul miasma of decay assailing her senses, she cannot escape the vivid image in her mind’s eye of a twisted, toothy grin and nearly-eyeless slits, watching her like prey, waiting for the right moment to strike, and to devour her. Human might is nothing before this abomination. Dread and anguish grip her heart.

Then, the creature speaks.

“Come looking for your boys, did you, girl?” The taunting ringing of cruel laughter bursts out inside Karla’s head. She reaches to cover her ears, but the laughter only grows louder.

“What were their names… Henry? Simon?”

The names snap Karla out of the creature’s enchantment, a rage-fueled focus centering her amidst its wicked sorcery. She springs to her feet.

“Don’t you DARE say their names, you monster!” Karla screams. The twisted laughter echoes in her head again, but this time it serves only to make her angrier.

“Henry, Simon, Henry, Simon, Simon, Henry!” More laughter. Karla takes her first step toward the abomination.

The laughter stops, and the grin becomes a grimace. “They fought, too. They died. And so shall you. Witness the glory and power Asmodeus bestows upon his scions, and tremble in fear at the might of the enemy your childish defiance has made for you.”

The creature suddenly transforms, the black-robed humanoid figure contorting and folding upon itself in a nightmarish array of positions torturous to any human. Gradually, the dark shape takes the form of a monstrous vargr, a black wolf with piercing golden eyes, towering even over Karla, a tall woman in her own right. The vargr pants as it trots toward her, its foul breath carrying the same decaying miasma as before, its matted, mangy hair rotting the underbrush as it sheds from the monster’s coat during its approach.

The monster strikes, lunging forward at Karla, jaws of death agape. Karla shields herself with her left arm, and the monstrous jaws latch on. Karla screams in pain as the vargr begins shaking vigorously, trying to throw her around like a ragdoll. Karla puts all her strength into holding her ground, and just manages to keep her footing, even as her arm burns in agony, the creature’s foul saliva and wicked fangs tearing into her skin. She stares into the creature’s golden eyes and tugs her left arm back, forcing it to fight harder to maintain its grip, as she reaches for her dagger. She quickly swings her right hand at the monster’s neck, and the silver-tipped blade connects, piercing its thick hide.

The vargr releases Karla’s arm and howls in pain. Inside her head, the monstrous voice returns, a separate scream of agony and anger. The creature briefly staggers back in pain. Karla seizes the opportunity and grabs a log from the fire with her left hand. As the creature renews its attack, Karla swings the flaming torch at its head, and sets the creature’s fur on fire!

The vargr stumbles back again, and Karla swings the torch until it breaks against the hardened skull of the abomination, though not without first spreading the fire to other parts of its fur. The creature howls in pain and begins to transform again, this time into a monstrous chimera of wolf and man. The creature stumbles into the fire and begins tearing into its own fur and skin, ripping itself to shreds. Pain turns to tortured, maniacal laughter as the abomination destroys itself in the fire. The ringing laughter echoes in Karla’s mind as she desperately covers her ears and screams to make it stop. It seems to go on forever, a night that never ends, a punishment far too cruel for even the worst sinner in Hell.

Then, all at once, it stops. Karla looks up. The creature is frozen—an ash statue of the monstrous man-wolf, slowly crumbling to dust in the fire. After a few minutes, nothing remains.

Karla stares blankly into the fire. Words escape her thoughts. Relief washes over her, despite the pain and terror and exhaustion.

One down.

KAKARROTO has DIED. He was a WITCH.

DL is probably next in line, but the Kak vote looks good, and I don't think Kak makes the counterwagon to himself 2/3 scum. Boat's town.
why don't you think Kak makes his counterwagon 2/3 scum?
Looks bad, and lfischl was an easy vote.
